Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone |  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians don’t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But I’d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? I’ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

As a woman and/or minority, are there any places you would not recommend traveling to?

by @gigigriffis |  | 29 comments

Hi all!

So, I’m in Colombia at the moment and have experienced some really intense harassment and even violence here. I was shocked because it’s been recommended to me by so many people, and so I thought perhaps it would be useful to start a thread here where we (we being women and other minorities) can talk about places where we recommend either not traveling or being particularly on guard.

So, are there any places you’ve been where you’ve experienced more violence, harassment, or maltreatment? Are there any places that you recommend other women/LGBT/ethnic minorities be particularly careful or not travel to?

I don’t want this to become a super negative thing or a personal preference thing, but I am hoping to get some insight into areas that might be more concerning and/or unsafe for certain groups so that we can all make informed decisions about where we want to spend our time. I really wish someone would have been frank with me about the issues here in Colombia, so I’m hoping we can be frank with each other about places where we haven’t felt 100% safe.

So, I’ll start:

I’ve had little to no problems in other parts of South and Central America, but here in Colombia I have witnessed not only street harassment, but also actual violence and malice and, worse, have seen people who could do something to stop it shrugging it off and saying “it’s normal here.” I would not recommend it for women and particularly women traveling alone.

Similarly, in Morocco I felt very uncomfortable as a female traveler. There wasn’t as much yelling or in-your-face harassment, but there was a ton of staring, men invading my space (standing over me in a bus and staring down at me from less than a foot away, for example), and men treating me like a second-class citizen (refusing to let me pass them on the sidewalk and instead forcing me to go around them into a busy street). I was traveling with a friend and we were both pretty exhausted by the end of the trip.

Any digital nomads w/ over $10k/m revenue?

by @homakov |  | 79 comments

Are there guys here with income over $10k month living more luxury-like lifestyle? I struggle to find friends with similar lifestyle who can travel anywhere and not care about the money, who can go to a nice restaurant or bar and not look at the prices.

I am not a douche bag (mostly) who only cares about the money, but the majority of people I met are trying to spend less and it kills so many opportunities to have fun… I am not rich at all, but I hate “backpacker” lifestyle and call myself a “flashpacker”.

I used to live in Bangkok and I visit this city frequently. Now I’m in Saigon and going to Taipei in the end of Nov. Anyone wants to connect?

Do you know good gyms in Lisbon, Portugal?

in Lisbon, Portugal by @chappupi |  | 4 comments

Hi!
I just moved to Lisbon, Portugal. I’m in the Alfama district, near Santa Apolónia metro.
I’d really like to find a gym which has weights and cardio machines. It looks like there are incredibly few options in Lisbon - and all extremely expensive.

How do you get paid abroad without paying tons of fees?

by @waterlooalex |  | 18 comments

What method do you use to get paid by your employer abroad? I’ve used wire transfers and PayPal, but come to realize there are lots of fees some more obvious than others.

For example, with PayPal, often there is an international transfer fee of 3.4% or more, then on top of that PayPal takes a 2.5% spread on the currency exchange rate.

Best Macbook Air apps for digital nomads?

by @zosiaswidlicka |  | 8 comments

I just got my first ever Macbook and I am curious to find out which apps you find the most useful when working and travelling. They can be directly related to work (I’m a writer, mostly), or for travelling, planning, organising or pure fun times.

So far I’ve got Skype and Chrome, hoping you can inspire me with some more interesting tools!

Cheers

Can you name companies (5+ employees) with distributed/nomadic teams?

by @ggeorgiev |  | 12 comments

So far I have:
Buffer, Toptal, Maptia & Upworthy - fully nomadic, the employees & founders are always on the go

Basecamp, GitHub, Mozilla - known for their distributed teams and mobility but majority of workforce still in HQ

Can you help me find more? I am doing research for digital nomads infographic.

I stayed in Cairo for a week as a solo female (21 years old). I was followed a lot and cat-called / asked for a 'view' or a kiss every 5 minutes even though I was completely covered up, so this is definitely not a place for the faint hearted. It was never with malicious intent though (no one forced themselves on me or even tried to mug me), the culture is just very different than western culture. Whilst they're pushy, they won't do anything unless you let them. It took a couple of days for me to

Berlin is overall a great city to be. Food is cheap and everywhere, easy to go out and have fun/meet for business. Rent has crept up but still far better value than where I came from. Internet: 36 EUR/month get me 450/40 mbps (cable -> DOCSIS 3.0) Public transport is 2.70 EUR/ticket. No woman I know has said they felt unsafe. Some really odd, xenophobic sounding comments on here. • Salt Lake City

Salt Lake is a great place to be: Tons of things to do, world class art and culture, some of the best snow in America, friendly polite people. However, the metrics score/ review is inaccurate, during the winter, Salt Lake has some of the worst air quality in the country. It's called inversion, look it up. Somehow being surrounded by coal power plants and oil refineries, while being horizonally sandwiched between two east-west mountain ranges, at high altitude, and two major north south, east wes

  • San Francisco

I've been living in SF since 2014 and I have to say Cost of Living is misrepresented. It's a lot more expensive now (2020) than posted. 1-bdr in center is $3,500-$4,000 + $200-$300 for parking + $100-$200 for utilities. Almost impossible to find month-to-month rent, so this is for 1-year lease. Coffee for two + a pastry is easily $20. Dinner for two never less than $50, unless it's fast food (+20% tips are expected) and if you want actually something good it's at least $100 for two. Airbnb is $1

I was here for a month. Rio is a beautiful and vibrant city. There's a lot of icons to see. There's great food and the beach is right there. In my, experience the pandemic hasn't impacted the city much. Bars and clubs are still open. I usually go out to Leblon, Ipanema, Lapa, and Barra da Tijuca. However, it can definitely be a dangerous city if you're being careless. About 10% of the people I've met had an incident there. I was mugged once walking home one night after the clubs in Ipanema, an
