My favorite tiny big city! Everything super close together, but a massive breadth of culture, activities, neighborhoods.

I’m African American. Was in Mallorca for a week on a trip. I found everyone amiable, friendly and, in retail outlets, accommodating. Same with food service. I noticed a lot of black folk in Palma, presumably vacationing there. When I got lost I was graciously helped. It was very hot there—June 2023. Not much on the architecture front. Besides the central part of town, housing was rather plain and even ugly. Some of the small towns I visited were also rather plain.

Porto Alegre (POA) is a city brimming with beautiful Nature. Trees and birds galore. Unfortunately, there is much wasted potential where historical architecture and intelligent zoning are concerned. Best city to live in Europe if you don't like bigger cities and capitals. Smaller, compact, but not much missing compared to the big ones, and super beautiful and peaceful. Maybe a bit isolated but with an international airport, though. Transport is amazing, mainly due to its subway system - yes, it has a subway system, something that bigger cities like Frankfurt, Koeln, Duesseldorf or Stuttgart don't. Thessaloniki is a city spread over the hills by the side of the Aegean. A cultural crossroads since Byzantine times, it has amazing cuisine and is full of reasonably priced tavernas and restaurants. Full of neo-classical buildings, there are lots of great living options available close to the city center and beyond. The pace of life is stately or as locals call it "hallarah" and most are not in a rush. There is a nice film festival in the Fall and many other public celebrations.

I guess if you're a nomad this doesn't matter much, but the long-term job pickings here are slim and among the most underpaid for a US city. There seems to be a tacit rent floor that means you won't find a good deal on housing. A lot of people don't seem very invested in their interpersonal relationships here since their ties to the area are often transient.

It's a pretty awesome place and next year will definitely stay for longer. So clean, has amazing people, and great culture

Been living here for few months and absolutely love it. Chosen to live near the sea and can go on walks on the beach when fancy it as well as enjoying a - small - but animated city center from time to time. If you search a little you can find restaurant Jems and go very easily to some cute places around such as Howth, Malahide and others. The downs : cost of living and fluctuating weather but at least you see the sun once in a while !

Although I'm usually in Montego Bay, I always spend at least a week in Kingston whenever I'm in Jamaica. I've been there twice a year since 2017. Mostar is a cozy place near the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is possible to go there by train and the view during traveling Sarajevo-Mostar is spectacular. Marseille is a nice big city, with a strong identity (very different from the rest of the country even the south of France). I would be a bit careful with Pattaya, because the Police are cracking down on foreign illegal workers, Expessialy from Russia, and that can accidentally put a remote worker like me in the crossfire. I loved this city! We stayed for one week, but could easily stay longer. What I love about this city is its beauty, walk ability and convenience to other places such as Germany, Switzerland and other parts of France, just to name a few. It’s a big, little city. This island is wonderful ! I was there for a month and I fell in love with Curaçao. Just to rectify : The tap water is incredibly good to drink !! Very beautiful and atmospheric city, but firstly it's very expensive to stay in Venice itself (even in winter, I thought rent prices are on the level with Zurich lol) so many people rent a place/hostel in Mestre, it's like 10 minutes train ride to Venice, kinda smarter. I spent a month working remotely from Nice and really loved it. I find the monthly cost of living numbers listed here are way off. In fact, living in Cannes is much cheaper than living in Chicago. Groceries are very affordable. If you can go elsewhere - go elsewhere. Unless you have a family, the country has absolutely no selling point for single people.
