How do you stay safe from natural disasters?

by @sgreer |  | 1 comment

Hey, planing on working in South East Asia for a few months. Still thinking about the exact places to go but wanted to check something with more experienced digital nomadsโ€ฆ

Is there any recommended way to keep alerted about natural disasters whilst moving around? I know some countries have local alert systems but I wonโ€™t be getting those as I will be travelling. I guess the chance is pretty small but would be nice to have something set up to keep me alerted just in case.

Also, should natural disaster coverage be something I look to get included in my insurance policy? Is this even possible or is it super expensive?

Thanks for your help and sorry if these are silly questions!

Which places in South East Asia are suitable for kids?

by @nomad4 |  | 3 comments

Hi everybody,

weโ€™re a family of 4 from Canada (Quebec province) leaving to Thailand on December 1st.
Our plan is to take things slowly and live in a peaceful environment while working a little and doing homeschooling to our 6-year-old son (plus escaping Canadian-cold winter )

This is roughly what our plan would look like:

  • arriving in Bangkok, staying there for about a week (air bnb probably)
  • moving to Chiang Mai then Krabi (most likely Ao Nang, Ao Tha Lane, Railay) or Koh Pha Ngan (North part) or Koh Chang (2-3 months)
  • then Indonesia (Bali/Gili islands) (1,5 months)
  • And Malaysia (Batu Ferengi, Penang) to finish (1 month)

Weโ€™re not city dwellers, and love being surrounded by nature.
Knowing that, what would be the best places for a family who want something quiet, walkable and with reliable Internet service?

Thanks!
Magali and Guillaume

  • New York City

Having spent a total of two weeks in London on two separate occasions and having lived in NYC for two years, both are among my favorite cities in the world. Londoners are quite internationally and ethnically diverse, and seemingly better educated and more intellectual than New Yorkers in aggregate. The city very clean with a stunning mix of modern and historic architecture, and arguably has Europe's best public transit in terms of signage, availability, cleanliness and general efficiency. I've been living in SF since 2014 and I have to say Cost of Living is misrepresented. It's a lot more expensive now (2020) than posted. 1-bdr in center is $3,500-$4,000 + $200-$300 for parking + $100-$200 for utilities. Almost impossible to find month-to-month rent, so this is for 1-year lease. Coffee for two + a pastry is easily $20. Dinner for two never less than $50, unless it's fast food (+20% tips are expected) and if you want actually something good it's at least $100 for two. Airbnb is $1

Nothing does a better job of explaining LAโ€™s beautiful diversity and different neighborhoods than the documentary about the late Jonathan Gold, our cityโ€™s greatest amabassador and the only food critic to ever win a Pulitzer Prize.
