How do you handle the constant switching of dentists?

How do you handle the constant switching of dentists?

Any thoughts on how to deal with continuity when switching dentists all the time? Dentist #1 says “we’ll keep an eye on #12 and #14”, but then you go to Dentist #2 and they don’t have the records (nor do I understand all the gibberish being spoken by the dentist). Do you keep your records and take them with you?

Also, what about x-rays. Some dentists want to take some for each “new patient”. Seems like having x-rays all the time can’t be good. Do you ask for copies or what? I’ve been dentist hopping for about 18 months now and am beginning to wonder how to keep my 54-year-old teeth in the best shape.

Any advice from those doing this long term?

Can anyone recommend a platform for remote jobs?

by @chrisrdodd |  | 13 comments

I’m currently on UpWork, PPH, Guru and Fiverr but it feels like I’m grasping at straws here. It takes a long time to apply for each job and then wait for the reply. Even still, most of the jobs are small and not recurring.

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for finding remote jobs (as in ones that are recurring)?

I know of a few out there like remoteok and all the sites it pulls from but they all seem to be jobs for experienced techies. Looking at the job board today I see the word, ‘senior’ and ‘principal’ showing up constantly.

My biggest skill is around video but I can do web development as well as a junior. Does anyone know a platform or group where I could find remote jobs more suited to me?

I appreciate any feedback. Thankyou!

Music thread! What do you listen to while working?

by @freedomsurfer |  | 31 comments

I’ve found that listening to certain types of music actually improve my productivity when I work on my website. When I’m trading though I require absolute silence.

This is one of my favourite mix:

Do you also listen to music while working?

Other places like Ubud, Chiang Mai, Vienna, Prague...?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @rich |  | 10 comments

Hi,
we’re having trouble deciding where to go in the fall (September, October, November) or over the winter for that matter. We loved Chiang Mai, Ubud, Vienna, Prague, Lisbon and we’re looking for a similar place to stay for 1-2 months. We’ll be in Germany and have a car. We wanted to go to Italy, but we’re not getting excited about any place in particular - or we just don’t know where to go. Any ideas?

What do we like? Pleasant weather, open minded people (whose eyes don’t fall out when they see a black girl), healthy food (in restaurants and supermarkets) with vegetarian options, a chill vibe. Nice rentals (we use Airbnb a lot). A nice compromise between nature and not feeling like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and no bugs or mosquitos please (they love us, but our bodies hate them. We get huge welts that stay for weeks).

Thanks!

Where should I set up a home base in Europe?

by @tylertringas |  | 22 comments

Hi folks,
I’ve been nomading for about 2 years straight and I’m looking to switch it up a little bit. This year I’d like to set up a home base somewhere while still being able to travel around 50% of the time. I thought I would just put my current thinking here to to see if anybody had advice or input on it.

First, why have a base at all? For me it boils down to three reasons:

  1. Gear. Rock climbing, skiing, diving, trekking (and if you’re me, cooking) require specialized gear. I have some of that stuff in storage in the US and I’m tired of over-paying to rent sub-par equipment. Looking for a spot to store my gear and easily swap it out as needed based on seasons.
  2. A comfortable default spot for work. Sometimes you just want to sit in one spot for a month or more and just crank on a project. I want a great setup that I know I can default back to when I really just need to focus on work.
  3. Community. Nomading is great and this community is excellent. But I’d like to have my cake and eat it too, being part of a local and nomad community.

So I’m looking at Barcelona, Berlin and Budapest. No I don’t have a weird thing about cities that start with “B” - it just worked out that way.

I’m likely looking for a 1 bedroom apartment in the city center (i.e. Gracia, Mitte, District VII). It needs to be either (1) cheap enough that I wouldn’t feel awful about traveling while still paying rent, maybe max EUR 800-900/mo (2) Or, easily Airbnb’able if I’m gone for a while. Also looking for “foreigner-friendly” setup without an extensive bureaucratic leasing process.

So my questions:

  1. What are the sites/processes for finding long-term apartments in these cities?
  2. Anybody seen any interesting other solutions to this? Like dedicated nomad housing? Sweet group housing around this idea?
  3. Anybody already have a setup like this that they’d care to share?

Also if anybody loves this idea and wants to chat about finding a bigger place together I’m open to the idea.

Thanks!

Has anyone tried to apply for a non-lucrative residence visa in Spain?

in Spain by @i_am_aileen |  | 29 comments

Hey everyone,

I’m planning on moving to Spain and I’d like to connect with those who have tried to apply for this special type of long-term visa called as “non-lucrative residence visa”.

Going from what I’ve researched so far, it’s a good option for us nomads (more so: business owners) to stay longer in Spain (one only needs to prove steady stream of income of at least EUR 2.2K per month and that you should NOT work for Spain — so let’s say having a U.S. company and staying in Spain is fine).

So : my concerns right now revolve mainly on anyone’s experiences with applying for this type of visa. How difficult was it? How long did it take you?

Also, I’m wondering about how I can secure a rental space for a year if my lease depends on the approval from the embassy. I’m also wondering if Valencia is a good place to stay in?

What are the best ways to find an apartment in Barcelona?

in Barcelona, Spain by @tylertringas |  | 15 comments

Lots of nomads in and headed to Barcelona. Let’s create a central place for resources, guides and sites for finding an apartment.

I’m headed there in April for 1-3 months (argh, Schengen!). So far Craigslist and Spotahome seem useful. What else is there?

Also any thoughts on neighborhoods would be great here. Right now I’m looking at Gracia which seems to be the spot. Probably avoid Barrio Gotico and Barceloneta due to masses of tourists. I’ve heard some good things about El Born… thoughts?
