Has anyone participated in remote work programs like Remote Year or Hacker Paradise?

by @whereskristin |  | 23 comments

I am interested if anyone in the Forum has participated in one of these โ€œRemote Yearโ€ style trips around the world. I see that many are popping up for 2016 as well and have not launched yet but there are probably a few ongoing that arenโ€™t on the below list.

Some examples are:

I definitely see the benefits (community, logistics, adventure, creative inspiration, etc) but Iโ€™m just interested in peopleโ€™s feedback overall. There doesnโ€™t seem to be much info online from actual participants and their feedback. For instance:

What has been your experience overall?

Do you prefer this type of group travel over traveling alone or with 1-2 other people?

What are the pros and cons?

How professional and organized are the companies offering these services?

Do people drop out?

Would you do it again?

What is what you expected?

Did you save time/money?

Was it a better overall experience than being a regular Digital Nomad?

What are accommodations like?

Is it worth the premium price?

What would you change/improve about the experience?

Any other feedback?

Etc.

We're organizing a Nomad House in Bali! Sign up here

Sign up for Nomad House Bali here

Hi nomads,

As you can see a new movement in this revolution is coming out. Please make some noise for Project Bali. Like @nomadicpad said in the Project Austin, is a project about bringing 5 like-minded people together in order to create an inspirational, motivational and recreational house. You will learn from different skillsets and stay on the success track.

First of all, Iโ€™m looking for 3 nomads who want to experiment that in Ubud. Second step is to find a house and get in. If you guys are looking for an amazing experience letโ€™s apply here.

Feel free to add anything.

Hi! We're Buffer! Our team is scattered around the world and we love sharing our journey. AUA!

by @nieldlr |  | 76 comments

Hi everyone,

weโ€™re part of the team at Buffer. Weโ€™re a remote-first company with team members all around the world! Some of us enjoy working from different coffee shops in town, to exploring our home countries, moving across country and exploring the rest of the this beautiful world. Every five months we all get together to give each other IRL high fives & work sitting across from each other.

Today Iโ€™m joined by Rodolphe, Mary, Joel, [Sunil] (http://bufferapp.com/about/team#sunil), Octavio, [Dan] (http://bufferapp.com/about/team#dan) and Asa, who all have done some form of nomading (is it a verb yet? :P), to answer any questions you have! Thanks so much for the opportunity! Weโ€™re super excited to share!

P.S. - Asa will jump in a bit later on her Friday morning as sheโ€™s currently in Australia

I'm Mark Manson, Author, Blogger and Entrepreneur. AMA

by @markmanson |  | 40 comments

Hey everyone.

My name is Mark Manson and Iโ€™m a professional blogger. My site is MarkManson.net. Although over the years, Iโ€™ve run a variety of online businesses and projects.

Iโ€™ve been a digital nomad since the Fall of 2009, making it slightly more than five years for me. (You can read what I learned from five years of being a nomad <7>.) In that time Iโ€™ve been to almost 60 countries and learned two languages to near-fluency (Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese) as well as studying a handful of others.

I love the nomadic lifestyle, but Iโ€™ve also been one of the only ones (to my knowledge) who has openly written about the drawbacks and sacrifices involved.

My girlfriend is Brazilian and has been traveling on the road with me since last summer. I feel like relationships is the next frontier for this lifestyle and thatโ€™s probably something Iโ€™m uniquely able to comment on.

I guess thatโ€™s it. Ask away!

They say you get what you pay for. After having traveled the previous 4 months in India, Cambodia, VietNam, Myanmar and Thailand, Singapore was so easy! The subway system is a marvel, streets signs were easy to read, everyone speaks English (that just makes it easy for me as an English speaker) it is safe, clean, and parks are gorgeous. I was there as COVID 19 was breaking out fairly fast and that put a damper on my time but I was so happy to be there anyway and plan to go back. For digital

  • Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai used to be N.1 for the digital nomad life. It is still great and you can find really cheap apartments (300-400$) and restaurants (2-3$ for a main). Wouldn't recommend staying there during the burning season. The best area is Nimman, but it's also the most expensive. You can stay in the old city that's very nice but that gets noisy during the weekend for the night markets. Last but not least, very safe city. All in all would go back in a heartbeat.

Don't believe the prices on here for an apartment. 686 usd/month refers to an apartment in a high class condo, right in the city centre and seconds away from the BTS(train station). Just remember this, people working at supermarkets make 2 usd/per hour. If you want to live like a local, then you can save a lot of money. If you don't mind a 5-10 minute walk from the BTS, then you can easily get a one bedroom apartment for 300 USD per month, in a high class condo, plus with free golf cart ser

Very luxurious yet has some parts of the city that are charming and have gothic architecture. A lot of tourists and people from Balkans who work in region. Pretty expensive. If you are not very rich just visit it and choose to stay in some other, more modest german city. In my opinion Frankfurt is city nr 3 in Germany after Berlin and Munich and I have travelled through much of Germany. Hamburg and Cologne are somewhere with the Frankfurt, but Frankfurt is more luxurious.

Split is a very pleasant town. You have Roman ruins, clear Adriatic waters, ferries to Hvar and other islands. Places to stay are affordable, food is medium priced. English is pretty commonly spoken. You can explore the town in about two days, but it seems a very pleasant place to live (Iโ€™ve been here 2 weeks & plan to stay for 2 months).

First time I was in KL was in 2015 as a backpacking student. I stayed for 2 weeks at an airbnb in Bangsar South and I loved it. Met up with Uni friends, made new friends and I really like the relaxed atmosphere, despite being in a huge city. Fast forward, 3 years later, I went by myself to KL for a 3 days stay on a visa run from Chiang Mai. I stayed in a hotel near Bukit Bintang. I actually really didn't like it - I think because I was by myself, in a fairly wild part of the city and got so us

Cebu city isn't safe, and internet is really slow unless you have a fiber connection. Most of areas are unsafe at night, some are sort of dangerous at daylight too. Even in deep province of Cebu island (such as Carcar city) I've been feeling much safer than here. Also don't forget about terrible road traffic and the fact that most of locals here doesn't speak English.

Berlin is overall a great city to be. Food is cheap and everywhere, easy to go out and have fun/meet for business. Rent has crept up but still far better value than where I came from. Internet: 36 EUR/month get me 450/40 mbps (cable -> DOCSIS 3.0) Public transport is 2.70 EUR/ticket. No woman I know has said they felt unsafe. Some really odd, xenophobic sounding comments on here. Biggest downsides IMO: service quality at restaurants - not that people are rude, but they don't seem to particular

  • Singapore

  • Porto

Better than Lisbon, much more cozy and welcoming. You can find cheaper places in the โ€œother side of the bridgeโ€, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. Public transports works and is pretty convenient, most part of the city is covered by tram stations. Beaches are freezing cold but nice for a running. Donโ€™t miss the daily sunsets in the garden nearby the bridge, eating pastel de nata and drinking a bottle of Porto Wine. But please, donโ€™t clap your hands to the sun โ€” only Brazilian t

  • Berlin

Berlin is overall a great city to be. Food is cheap and everywhere, easy to go out and have fun/meet for business. Rent has crept up but still far better value than where I came from. Internet: 36 EUR/month get me 450/40 mbps (cable -> DOCSIS 3.0) Public transport is 2.70 EUR/ticket. No woman I know has said they felt unsafe. Some really odd, xenophobic sounding comments on here. Biggest downsides IMO: service quality at restaurants - not that people are rude, but they don't seem to particular

  • Boracay

If this place is Hostile towards LGBT, then non of the rich movie stars in Hollywood would even think of visiting this place. When I say rich, I mean Billionaires and Millionaires, that even a fraction of their money can probably buy the whole island itself. Now, they say that this beach is world famous? World famous for what! for bashing LGBTs? This narrow mindedness that's going on around this island is nothing but hypocrisy. Women are allowed to wear pasties and dental floss on the beac
