Introduce yourself — who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, where’ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but they’re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So let’s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • what’s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you don’t want to
But the more you share… The merrier!

Just interested to see a quick rundown of everyone’s next stop. Where will you be going next and when?

How much do you guys work as a nomad?

by @munly_leong |  | 16 comments

Just wondering how much people are working? the typical 9-5 each day while travelling? part time? and what do you do?

Curious because though i’m not really a nomad at heart when I am living that way I’d prefer to be working less rather than more. Just thinking back to my hostelling days I’d probably like to enjoy the location during the day and would only really feel like working when coming back to rest and THAT would be work time. For this reason I am getting more partial to non dev roles to facllitate this i.e. being open to the world vs shutting it out to get shit done.

Are there any nomad game developers here?

by @munly_leong |  | 16 comments

Are there any nomad game developers here? or aspiring nomad game developers? It does seem to be an extreme rarity. Even moreso since most game devs typically don’t cross over with the web developer or startup crowds unless they have something like Unity3D in common. Also games are typically a lot more work than websites and are usually much less profitable at the indie/small studio level.

Anyway here’s what I’ve found so far.
http://www.chronosoft.com/ - only making $150/mnth on RPGMaker type games, tough even for Chiang Mai :frowning:

http://www.gamedevnomad.com/ - seems like he’s trying to support himself creating art asset packs first and work up to building games full time.

Looking forward to blogging about my own journey but I have a ways to go to even catch up to these guys first. Was also thinking that anyone working on even moderately complex Unity games or high res 2d games might have assets and builds that are prohibitive to move around on countries with weaker internet, i.e. sub 5mbit, cough Australia  etc. Would love to hear more experiences if you got them.

There are far more teams collaborating remotely out there just from what I know, but almost none of them are nomads with most AAA and vfx studios not working this way in part due to potential IP leaking issues but it seems not to be a problem with the kickstarter generation.

How can I stay healthy as a digital nomad?

by @nomadaccountant |  | 16 comments

Please share your tips for keeping healthy while travelling. My 2 favourites, that have helped my out numerous times are:

  1. Probiotics to avoid stomach complaints (yakult, yoghurt, kimchi, etc)
  2. Red/raspberry fanta to settle stomach issues. May not work all the time but a couple of bottles of red fanta early on has not failed in settling my stomach.

How is Costa Rica for digital nomads?

in Costa Rica by @seansean11 |  | 11 comments

I’m making my way up to Costa Rica from Colombia right now and plan to spend a 2-3 week period working remote when I arrive to Costa Rica. I’m currently looking at AirB&B for a beach apartment w/ wi-fi in a few popular beach destinations, but the cost is looking pretty high (think $800+ for 2 weeks). I speak Spanish and was thinking that maybe I could haggle something less pricey when I arrive, but don’t want to risk it.

The question I have is where and how can I set myself up for the best stay. Where should I search for places to rent? Should I try to rent an apartment with good wi-fi or just stay in a hostel on the cheap and go to coffee shops? And lastly, what are some of the best places to DN (I saw a bit about Quepos and Santa Teresa in another post)?

Housing is an issue (so cost of living is high) but the city is beautiful and summer in Amsterdam is hard to beat with all the cultural activiies and music festivals. Would not want to live in the actual city center (inside the "grachtengordel") but have been living in East for over 2 years now and aside from the price (and size) of apartment life is just good here. Biking everywhere is bliss. Winter can be cold though.

Well. Stayed 3 days close to the beach. Last day on the toilet and 2 days in the bed at home (Czech Rep.). Cought the famous disease from water probably. So my review is probably not objective :-). My nomadic experience about Morroco however is quite poor. Dirty, uncertain, you can't believe anyone, not feeling safe at all ... I am maybe too old for this kind of adventure :-)

I stayed in Cairo for a week as a solo female (21 years old). I was followed a lot and cat-called / asked for a 'view' or a kiss every 5 minutes even though I was completely covered up, so this is definitely not a place for the faint hearted. It was never with malicious intent though (no one forced themselves on me or even tried to mug me), the culture is just very different than western culture. Beirut is a place where ideas are formed, and where art, culture, cuisine and an ardour for life thrive. Lived in Barcelona for a year and a half. I would agree that the weather is perfect and Barcelona does have a great tech scene as well as food and has everything landscape and lifestyle wise that you could think of. Bureaucracy isn't too bad if you nip it in the bu** early and have patience. Also, some clubs are free. (Jamboree!). The metro is also, very efficient with red and purple being the busiest lines. Very walkable city too. Plenty of opportunity to meet people as well. The beaches are ok
