What's the weirdest thing you travel with?

by @gigigriffis |  | 21 comments

I was thinking about packing today and Iโ€™m curious: whatโ€™s the weirdest thing you guys have in your bags? Nomads are, by nature, minimalists, but Iโ€™m sure we all do it differently. I have a friend who travels with BASE jumping gear, another a sequin dress. So, whatโ€™s the most unusual thing in your bag?

Mine is probably that I travel with a dog.

What nomads are out there traveling married and/or with a family?

by @danielgenser |  | 37 comments

Iโ€™m curious to hear from the nomads out there who are traveling as a married couple (or long term committed couple, no matter). Many of the articles, guides, and tips one reads are understandably written from the single travelerโ€™s perspective (even if they are traveling in a group).

What nomads are out there traveling with a marriage mate and/or family?

How are you earning a living while traveling?

by @mattlock |  | 22 comments

Iโ€™ve been traveling for over a year, and Iโ€™ve been working on 3 month contracts in locations abroad to sustain travel. I wanted to see what the community was like as far as digital nomads go. Are you trading your skills for $$$? and if so, how are you doing it?

(Iโ€™ve also wanted to try this, but havenโ€™t been to successful.)

Would you like to help revitalize a village in Greece?

in Greece by @lightmotif |  | 48 comments

Hi all -

Iโ€™ve recently connected with an interesting community group called the Meraki people, based in a village in the Peloponnese of Greece, only 2 hours from Athens and its airport, and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Kalamata and its airportโ€ฆfull of cultural gems, great beaches and wild mountainous landscapes. They are trying to bring new life and economy to their villages, in a self-sustaining, technologically-innovative, and environmentally-positive way. And theyโ€™re interested in hosting digital nomads in a community experience where you could work on your own projects and/or volunteer to help the local communities, depending on your interests and availability. They have received some significant international recognition already.

Iโ€™m trying to work out details around a potential gathering approx mid-Nov to mid-Dec. but also want to gauge interest before getting too far. Cost of lodging should be reasonable/ off-season โ€“ apts or private rooms with heat and hot water, and there would be a co-working space + potential community kitchen. @alldreamedup and @munly_leong expressed interested in Greece this fall - have either of you made plans? Also, @srajan821 and @bradonomics - the Meraki people are trying to do something similar to an eco-village, so wanted to give you a shout too.

Hope to hear from some nomads interested this fall (or in the future). Thanks!

Susan

Has anyone convinced a SO to begin traveling with them?

by @dhamm |  | 5 comments

I have a girlfriend who is considering traveling with me and was trying to figure out what she could do that is also remote to contribute. Iโ€™m wondering if anyone here has had the same experience or just some ideas about what a SO with no technical skills could do to work remotely?

Any nomads here with chronic medical conditions?

by @danielgenser |  | 5 comments

Iโ€™ll start โ€“ I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 19 (Iโ€™m now 32). I wear a Medtronic insulin pump that stays attached to me pretty much 24/7. One of the unique packing considerations I will have to make is how to fit as many consumable insulin pump supplies as I can into my backpack/roller bag.

The more I can fit, the longer I can do without refilling in an unknown area (there is a Medtronic rep in Bangkok that Iโ€™ve gotten in touch with, but when your life depends on something, you donโ€™t take it lightly).

One of these little sandwich bags contain a single โ€˜set changeโ€™ which lasts 3 days.

At the same time, weโ€™re trying to consider our health insurance needs. I donโ€™t want to take my ~$1,000/month USA insurance policy expense with me in areas that it will not be accepted, but at the same time, Cigna Global and other such traveler medical insuranceโ€™s uniformly donโ€™t cover pre-existing conditions.

Iโ€™ve gone without insurance before, and in an area like Thailand, Iโ€™m thinking I can get by with just paying retail cost for medicine and any needed doctor visits.

Iโ€™d love to hear from other type 1 diabetics, or really anyone who has had to consider such medical needs while nomading.

Hi, Iโ€™m Meng To, author of Design+Code and world traveler. AMA!

by @mengto |  | 24 comments

Hi, Iโ€™m Meng, designer, coder and author of Design+Code. Iโ€™ve been traveling and working for 18 months across 30 cities, 20 countries and consumed a ton of coconut drinks.

My journey started because of a denied visa, and today I make 5x more money while traveling than I did in San Francisco. I accidentally built my own startup in the process and now have a remote team. Itโ€™s definitely possible to hit the road without sacrificing your tech lifestyle and entrepreneurial spirit.

Ask me anything!
