Living in one EU country with a residence from another EU country?

by @robetus |  | 8 comments

I really thought this had already been asked on here but couldn’t find anything specific. Apologies if it has been asked before and a link would be greatly appreciated. I’m a US citizen and if I have a residence permit for one Western European country that states I only have to live in the country for 6 months out of the year can I live in another European country for the other 6 months. I plan on EU country hoping every other 6 months to avoid becoming a resident of more than one country.

Is anyone doing this now?

Best way to look for a flat in Melbourne?

in Melbourne, Australia by @robetus |  | 4 comments

I’m movie to Melbourne Australia in mid March where I’ll be staying for at least 6 months. I have a 12 month visa but I’m not sure if I want to stay that long. I want to rent an apartment and I’m looking for some advise on how to do this from those who live or have lived there. I know of gumtree and craigslist to look, but I was also thinking about a rental agency that could find something for me. I’d like to stay right around $350 AUD per week. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's the best time to take birth control pills while traveling?

by @robetus |  | 7 comments

I’m traveling with my girlfriend and she takes birth control pills, one pill every day. Can any of the digital nomadic women on here give her any tips on what time to take it to best suite global travel inside many timezones?

What immunizations should I get for India and South East Asia?

in India by @robetus |  | 17 comments

I’m leaving for India in about a month and then headed to Thailand and probably Indonesia. What immunizations should I get, and which ones did you get for these areas. The CDC says Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most and long list for some travelers. I’m also considering a Malaria prevention pill. I will be in India for 10 days and Thailand and Indonesia for about a month.

Any information regarding what other nomads have or have experience with would be greatly appreciated.

A place in Melbourne I can send a box to?

in Melbourne, Australia by @robetus |  | 5 comments

Anyone know of a place I can send a medium sized box to in Melbourne, Australia for up to 60 days? I plan on moving there after a tour through India and SEA and I don’t know exactly when I’ll be able to pick it up, but it will be within 60 days for sure. I just don’t have an exact date.

There are all kinds of virtual mailbox places in the US that will hold a parcel for up to 60 days for a small monthly fee, but after some searches on the net for places Melbourne I thought I’d ask here. Thanks for any input.

Should I elect my LLC as an S-Corp for taxes, I'm a US citizen in Europe?

by @robetus |  | 3 comments

I have an LLC formed in Portland, Oregon. I am the only member and do not ever plan on adding more members. Should I elect to have my LLC treated as an S-Corp for my taxes? I am a US citizen living in Europe but I do not qualify for the foreign income exclusion yet. Can anyone give advice that has made this election? I know that as an S-Corp I can pay myself a reasonable salary based on the company’s income and then pay the rest to myself in dividends that are exempt from certain taxes.

If I chose to pay myself 70% of the company’s income as my salary am I required to pay myself the other 30% in dividends or can I leave that 30% in the company’s coffers for legal fees, large chargebacks, and the like? Thank you for reading and with any help provided.

Introduce yourself — who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, where’ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but they’re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So let’s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • what’s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you don’t want to
But the more you share… The merrier!

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen |  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

I’m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (it’s ok if it’s not accepted in the US as I’m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

I’m a U.S. accountant who works with Americans who live abroad, ask me anything!

by @olwagner |  | 100 comments

Hi everyone,

If you have a U.S. tax question or would like some U.S. tax insight on your business/structure, ask away!

I have been preparing tax returns for US citizens abroad since 2012. I can answer any question in US tax with an international flavor. I operate 1040abroad.com and I have maintained a blog at taxsamurai.com

I look forward to answering all your questions. And if you are in Ho Chi Minh City in December, let’s meet !!!

How do you receive physical mail as a digital nomad?

by @danielgenser |  | 81 comments

Does anyone have recommendations to handle physical mail? In the USA, I’ve noticed various services over the years where you get a physical address that you can change your address to, they receive your mail, scan stuff and send you PDF’s.

Has anyone used these types of services? Impressions?

Anyone here who doesn't officially have a residency?

by @absokim |  | 16 comments

Hi everyone,

Is it illegal to not have a residency?

I’m from Sweden and make all my money online. Now I’m going to become a non-resident for tax purposes.

My thinking is that I want to live in Australia for a few months of the year and then live in 2 other places a year. Basically… I’m looking to escape tax and not have an official residency anywhere. At the same time, I’m gonna take great care avoiding to stay long enough in each place so I’m not obliged to pay tax.

The thing is… On the visa into Australia I have to type in residency, and when I don’t legally have one, what the heck am I suppose to type in?

Could I just type in my old address in Sweden? (Or maybe my parent’s address). Or would that be considered illegal seeing I don’t live there but more importantly I don’t have residency there anymore (though I will of course always remain a citizen)?

Curious to hear your thoughts about this and if maybe someone is already doing this and living without an official residency.

(The ultimate goal with all of this is of course to avoid giving away half of my hard-earned money every month while being able to live a more comfortable life in 3 places a year)
