Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 671 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 |  | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

TMobile for Continuous Travel?

How do you work out and stay fit on the road?

by @christianbundy |  | 30 comments

I worked out a few times a week back home, but havenโ€™t been able to figure out how to make it a part of my routine now that Iโ€™m living out of my backpack in hostels. Iโ€™ve always gone to gyms, but Iโ€™d be open to trying bodyweight exercises. I thought that I might be able to do bodyweight exercises in parks/etc, but the past few days in London have been wet and miserable and I canโ€™t find the motivation to go do push ups in wet grass. Any advice?

3 Months in India, Any Suggestions?

in India by @yuvalbarhai |  | 16 comments

Hello everyone!

I want to DN India for 3 months (or more) and the country is huge so Iโ€™m not sure how to start planning this, maybe you guys can help
My major concern is the internet, from what Iโ€™ve read itโ€™s really bad - is that true?
What am I looking for:

  1. Spiritual oriented towns.
  2. Near (or in) some beautiful nature (doesnโ€™t necessarily have to be near a beach)
  3. Decent speed internet. I can deal with unreliable internet that wont work all day long, but I canโ€™t handle really slow internet.
  4. 1 month stay in each town.

What am I NOT looking for:
Big cities like New Delhi.

Time - can be anytime of the year.
Weather - I donโ€™t mind hot weather, but donโ€™t want below 0 weather.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, if what Iโ€™m looking for is even possible. Thanks!

Bali vs. Chiang Mai for digital nomads?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @snu6ew |  | 16 comments

My girlfriend and I started our DN life this March and went straight to Chiang Mai because of itโ€™s ease of living. We love it. CM is great โ€“ we got a scooter for 2700 THB, a nice apartment for 8000 THB all in, we get our laundry done for 50 THB, eat out at nice places every day for less than 100 THB etc. Arriving here needed nearly no preparation โ€“ it just worked out all by itself.

We are still on tight budget and donโ€™t want to give up much of CMโ€™s quality of life but we want to see other places and we are now thinking about what could be our next destination. We are not really willing and able to spend more than what we spend now. Bali seems to be a good place according to what you all wrote.

How does it compare to Chiang Mai or Thailand in general?
CM can get very hot and we often acknowledge that we should have chosen an apartment with a pool here. Can I rent something in Bali for a few months with a pool for less than 250 USD?

Are there any Nomad-houses or similar projects at the moment that make it easy to connect to other people?

We donโ€™t really hang out in co-working spaces, more in cafรฉs. We source products in China and sell them to customers in Europe through e-commerce.

Any tips or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What do you do about cooking whilst traveling?

by @kathrynoh |  | 26 comments

This is something Iโ€™ve not really seen addressed anywhere much but, when you are staying somewhere medium term, say 1-6 months, what you do about cooking? I figure anything shorter than that and you can make do, while over 6 months you arenโ€™t going to mind stocking a kitchen so much. But, for that medium term period, it feels like a waste to spend too much on pantry supplies and equipment but too long to get by on basics.

Anyway, Iโ€™d love to know what other people in regards to cooking. Do you eat out for all your meals, have a few โ€˜go toโ€™ dishes that you can cook anywhere with minimal equipment (mine would be omelettes) or do you adjust to the local cuisine?

As a woman and/or minority, are there any places you would not recommend traveling to?

by @gigigriffis |  | 29 comments

Hi all!

So, Iโ€™m in Colombia at the moment and have experienced some really intense harassment and even violence here. I was shocked because itโ€™s been recommended to me by so many people, and so I thought perhaps it would be useful to start a thread here where we (we being women and other minorities) can talk about places where we recommend either not traveling or being particularly on guard.

So, are there any places youโ€™ve been where youโ€™ve experienced more violence, harassment, or maltreatment? Are there any places that you recommend other women/LGBT/ethnic minorities be particularly careful or not travel to?

I donโ€™t want this to become a super negative thing or a personal preference thing, but I am hoping to get some insight into areas that might be more concerning and/or unsafe for certain groups so that we can all make informed decisions about where we want to spend our time. I really wish someone would have been frank with me about the issues here in Colombia, so Iโ€™m hoping we can be frank with each other about places where we havenโ€™t felt 100% safe.

So, Iโ€™ll start:

Iโ€™ve had little to no problems in other parts of South and Central America, but here in Colombia I have witnessed not only street harassment, but also actual violence and malice and, worse, have seen people who could do something to stop it shrugging it off and saying โ€œitโ€™s normal here.โ€ I would not recommend it for women and particularly women traveling alone.

Similarly, in Morocco I felt very uncomfortable as a female traveler. There wasnโ€™t as much yelling or in-your-face harassment, but there was a ton of staring, men invading my space (standing over me in a bus and staring down at me from less than a foot away, for example), and men treating me like a second-class citizen (refusing to let me pass them on the sidewalk and instead forcing me to go around them into a busy street). I was traveling with a friend and we were both pretty exhausted by the end of the trip.

What would the perfect AirBNB listing be for digital nomads?

by @dave_chakrabarti |  | 8 comments

Iโ€™m toying with the idea of hosting on AirBNB, in a city that doesnโ€™t have a large digital nomad presence (Calcutta, India). What would the ideal hosting ad look like for a digital nomad?

My personal preferences:

  1. Clean (as clean / organized / decluttered as Iโ€™d expect a non-backpacker-y hotel to look like), so I actually feel like working. In India, this goes double for bathrooms; Iโ€™m willing to pay a lot more for a dry, clean bathroom.
  2. Fast, reliable wifi. Everyone seems to have a different definition of โ€œfastโ€ or โ€œbroadbandโ€, so some indication of actual speeds / bandwidth caps / reliability would be ideal, but I never see this in ads.
  3. Things within walking distance (mostly, I mean restaurants / bars, but sometimes department stores / malls / coffee shops are convenient).
  4. A couple of different places to work / read (hammock + desk, desk + coffee table on a balcony with a view of the mountains, standing desk + beanbag, etc).

I know thatโ€™s a pretty specific list, and most AirBNB hosts arenโ€™t developers, so much of this isnโ€™t likely on their radar. What would you guys ad to the list? What makes you AirBNB over a hotel, and / or what would be a must-have AirBNB feature?

Thanks,

D.

One Month in Mexico - Where to Stay?

in Mexico by @yuvalbarhai |  | 15 comments

Hello,

Iโ€™m planning to fly to Mexico mid October for 1 month. Iโ€™m working on my laptop (like many others I guess) so I need a reliable wifi connection.
My budget is about $1500/month.
I was looking at Playa Del Carmen and renting a flat through Airbnb is not too expensive since I get a major discount for staying a month.
I donโ€™t really care about nightlife. I want a place with good vibes and I want a place near the ocean or with nature around me.
Does anyone have any thoughts about Playa Del Carmen? and Maybe suggestions of other place in Mexico?

Thank you!

What do you do to avoid plastic bottled water in Asia?

by @nomadaccountant |  | 18 comments

If I stay somewhere for a while I usually get hard bottled bulk water containers, but often I have to rely on cheap plastic water bottles, which isnโ€™t good from both a health and environmental perspective. Have used a drink bottle with a filter but canโ€™t say I trusted it, and it was a little annoying. Any better options in use?

by @mpp |  | 68 comments

While his type of question has been asked before, please bear with me as the existing threads donโ€™t match/answer my questions.

tl;dr

German citizen working as a consultant for a US startup and moving perpetually every < 3months.

  • (Where) Do I pay taxes when I technically donโ€™t have a residence?
  • Is it allowed by European/German law to not have a residence?
  • Are there countries where you can get a residence w/o staying 6 month/year or large investments, that do not tax non-remitted foreign-sourced income?
  • Can you recommend a good European/German tax advisor who could give a professional opinion?
  • Do I need to start a company to invoice an US company for consultancy work?

less short version:

Inspired by this community & @levelsio, Iโ€™m in the process of becoming a digital nomad myself. The one issue that is currently blocking me is sorting out what the best way to handle taxes is. Iโ€™ve been offered a job by a US startup, they want to hire me as a remote consultant (contractor). Iโ€™m not limited to a location and free to move where/as often as I want.

As the German tax authorities are known for not joking around, I want to make sure I handle the tax issue correctly. My research so far leads me to believe that as long as I donโ€™t own any property in Germany or do any business there, I should be fine with not paying taxes there. Switching countries at least once every three months also should be sufficient to not create any tax obligations in the respecitive countries.

While in theory this sounds like you donโ€™t have to have a residence anywhere and are not obliged to pay taxes, I have a hard time believing that this is not covered by International/European/German law. Did anyone (ideally European/German citizen) consult a tax advisor / lawyer on this and can give an educated answer to this? Iโ€™d also be thankful for recommendations for good tax advisors specialized on this topic.

Last but not least, as I havenโ€™t freelanced before: Do I need to start a company to be able to invoice the US company for my consultancy work or could I just do this as an individual?

Sorry for this rather long post, thanks to everyone whoโ€™ll take the time to answer <3

Quick Dry Travel-Friendly Shorts?

by @jcw |  | 7 comments

Hi all,

Iโ€™m after some quick drying and easy to look after shorts that donโ€™t look like travel gear.

So something that looks like regular chino shorts - not extra pockets or extra zips etc, cut above the knee - but will dry quickly, and maybe pack up without creasing too much.

Any ideas? Most of the ones I can see have lame zip pockets or other silly details.

Thanks1

Deciding when to move? Where to move?

by @haroldtreen |  | 12 comments

Hello Nomads!

Iโ€™ve been travelling for ~5 months in South America. When I left home my plan was to see every country (1 month per country) and then head to Europe.

Iโ€™ve since started contracting and the rapid travel pace is really draining me. I want to stay in one place for a while, meet more like minded people and surround myself with people also building awesome stuff.

South America doesnโ€™t seem to have a very active nomad/tech community though. Iโ€™m also just not connecting with people the way Iโ€™m used to. Itโ€™s left me wondering if Iโ€™d be better off heading elsewhere right away. At the same time I feel stupid flying elsewhere when thereโ€™s still so much to see in South America. I also think a lot of other places I have in mind would raise my cost of livingโ€ฆ so basically moving would burn my money faster.

So to turn that into a question:

How do you decide when to move?
What are the things you look at when you consider a new place?
Nomad List ranks places based on factors like Weather and Costโ€ฆbut what about people?
What cities are good for meeting tech nomads?
What cities have great, fun, welcoming people that are easy to interact with?
Any factors to consider in cities that NomadsList overlooks?
Where should I go?

Thanks!

Harold

Is Kathmandu in Nepal a good place for digital nomads?

in Kathmandu, Nepal by @karim |  | 11 comments

I am thinking to go to Nepal and grow my online business there. I could not find Kathmandu in the nomad list so I hoped someone here could tell about his/her experience in this city or Nepal in general. Pros/cons?

What shoes/footwear do you pack?

by @danielgenser |  | 24 comments

Iโ€™m thinking through what Iโ€™m going to bring for footwear. Iโ€™d like to limit it to two pairs โ€“ one in my bag, one on me. Weโ€™re going to be in tropical/beach areas, but also cities. Iโ€™d like to be able to look presentable when needed, but also reasonable for non-urban areas, too.

Considering my existing Nike sneakers plus these sneaker/boot hybrid things by Reef โ€“ the Reef Spinaker: http://www.zappos.com/reef-spiniker-mid-nb-resrv-collection-black-tan

They seem super lightweight and comfortable (I tried them on at REI the other day). Has anyone else tried them out?

Experience with e-Tourist Visas in India anyone?

in India by @them |  | 7 comments

Hi all,

did anyone (with a EU Passport) ever got a e-Tourist Visa for India? Visa regulations in India change quite often, so I am wondering, if it is actually possible to get the e-Tourist Visa (eTV) that is issued on arrival.

Thanks!

Best place to buy a laptop in Asia?

by @kathrynoh |  | 9 comments

My laptop is having issues and Iโ€™d rather replace it before it gets too bad. Iโ€™m currently in Chiang Mai, going to Phnom Phen next week then to KL and Seoul.

My impression is that Seoul would be the best place for buying a replacement but Iโ€™m not sure what Iโ€™m basing that one.

Where in Asia am I likely to get the best bang for my buck?
