What do you get out of the #nomads chat?

by @travis |  | 8 comments

I’m assuming a lot of people on here are also members of #nomads. I’ve considered joining, but I’m curious about what value you get out of it, how it’s been useful, etc.

Note: I’m certainly not trying to ask “is it worth it” or undercut its’ value in any way – I’m mostly curious about how it’s useful and trying to figure out if it would be a good fit for me, and figure other people might benefit from that discussion as well

Just interested to see a quick rundown of everyone’s next stop. Where will you be going next and when?

How can I monitor my data usage when I have limited amounts of mobile data?

by @littleshiva |  | 6 comments

I use a mobile internet stick that gives me 1 gigabyte of bandwidth in a 24-hour period. If I use it all up in half that time (easy with print jobs) I have to either wait it out or use another stick. What are some of the things I can do to keep bandwidth from being used without my knowledge? (macbook pro / Yosemite) I looked in the activity monitor and safari seemed to be using a lot so I keep it off now when I’m not using it, and I paused synching on dropbox and creative cloud until I’m hooked up to wifi. Any other tricks?

Can you name some destinations where hardly anyone smokes?

by @ani_goes_tweet |  | 24 comments

I’m dying to spend some time in a beautiful place (especially a place with mountains and a good climate) where it’s possible to enjoy the outdoor cafe culture without breathing in lots of secondhand smoke! There must be some places that are kinder to non-smokers than others.

Any suggestions?

(Bhutan is no good… its daily tourist visa is way out of my reach!)

Do you know a small surf town with internet in Mexico?

in Mexico by @nicrose8 |  | 18 comments

I am currently in Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico with my visa but am ready to move. I need internet and would really like surfing and mountain biking to be part of the community I move to.

Does anyone have location suggestions or experience in San Blas, Nayarit; Saladita, Guerrero; or Nexpa, Michoacan? Thanks

Does anyone bring their bicycle with them on their travels?

by @lamby |  | 36 comments

Anyone else keen cyclist or runner? I’m an ex-triathlete and—whilst I’ve got my wardrobe down to a minimum—I’m lugging around a rather large box on my travels containing my road bike. Am not doing the whole bike-touring thing, just using it for adventures, exploring, keeping fit, taking epic photos, etc., and taking my own bike is far nicer than renting.

Finding the balance between that and real work is a bit of a challenge, mostly in terms of a hard ride in the morning will mean I’m a little foggy throughout the rest of the day, concentration-wise.

Still, I’d rather use and enjoy my health whilst I’m young instead of waiting until I retire to do these things.

(If you do bike or run, do you also Strava?)

How can you avoid foreign banking, ATM, and transaction fees?

by @danielgenser |  | 52 comments

What’s the latest on how to avoid ATM/bank/foreign transaction fees? How do you keep track of money spent when you’re never quite sure of the exact exchange rate? I normally use YNAB to keep on top of my budget here at home, but I’m dreading keeping tabs on all the minute foreign transaction adjustments abroad…

I’m looking at this to check out some of the banking options: http://thepointsguy.com/2014/02/the-top-11-checking-accounts-for-avoiding-foreign-atm-fees/

Have you used any of these?

Can you name companies (5+ employees) with distributed/nomadic teams?

by @ggeorgiev |  | 12 comments

So far I have:
Buffer, Toptal, Maptia & Upworthy - fully nomadic, the employees & founders are always on the go

Basecamp, GitHub, Mozilla - known for their distributed teams and mobility but majority of workforce still in HQ

Can you help me find more? I am doing research for digital nomads infographic.

What's a good budgeting app for nomads?

by @stepunk |  | 9 comments

I’m looking for a good budgeting and expenses tracking software to track my expenses and my income, I don’t mind if it’s free or paid, but I can’t find any with all these characteristics which are fundamental for me. They always lack at least one or two.

  • multi-account (for me and my girlfriend)
  • multi-currency (of course)
  • sync between desktop and multiple mobile devices
  • geolocation for each transaction to better track expenses by country and city

What do you use?
