Looking for a place to hibernate and surf in Jan/Feb/March - any tips?

by @tvrhe |  | 14 comments

Hi all,

For Jan through March I’m looking for a place that as a) friendly people, b) warm climate, c) surfing, and d) reliable internet (either in cafes or a coworking space).

So far, this is my short list:

  • Canggu, Bali (already was there last year, but too busy with work then)
  • Phillippines (I don’t know where yet, but I’ve read Baler might be nice)
  • Mexico (but haven’t yet researched)
  • Nicaragua (but haven’t yet researched)

If anyone has some good info on this, please share! : )

Lisbon vs Barcelona for mid- to long-term stay: any advice?

in Lisbon, Portugal by @tvrhe |  | 24 comments

Hi guys,

From this spring onwards I’m returning to Europe and I’m looking to either set up a home base in Lisbon or Barcelona. Any fellow nomads who can share their experiences of living in either of those cities?

I’ve only been to Barcelona and I like the vibe a lot. Major downside is the tourists (obviously).

To me it seems that both cities have good infrastructure, internet, climate (mediterranean), nightlife, culture, food, beaches (and Lisbon is good for surfing as well of course). Price wise, Lisbon is obviously a bit cheaper.

One important consideration is the public transport. Since I’m not looking to rent a car I prefer the city where I can travel on foot, bike or metro.

Based on my limited info, it’s hard to pick one. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Looking for mid-term accomodation in Canggu (±3 months)

in Canggu, Indonesia by @tvrhe |  | 11 comments

Hi,

any tips, suggestions? It’s for Jan-2015 through March-2015.

I’m ideally looking for a nomad house-style type of setup, in which 4 or more digital nomads all live together in a nice, modern villa. But I’m not sure if there are too many of those around in Canggu.

Otherwise a private room+bathroom or private apt. for around $600-800 will be fine (depending on the speed of the Internet).

Any help or tips are more than welcome : )

Any tips on renting a place in Ubud with decent Internet?

in Ubud, Indonesia by @tvrhe |  | 3 comments

I’m looking to rent a place for 3 months (or longer) that has relatively fast, reliable Internet.

I know this is Ubud we’re talking about, but I’m not requiring Korea-like speeds. Anything that around 1MBps (= 4 to 8 megabits per second) and upload-speeds of around 100kbps (± megabits per second) will suffice, as long as it’s stable.

Can anyone point me in the right direction and/or offer up any tips?
My plan thus far is to contact airbnb owners directly and ask for rates + a screenshot of their internet speeds.

I’m not on a tight budget, so I’m willing to spend a bit more.

Thanks so much! : )

Introduce yourself — who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, where’ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but they’re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So let’s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • what’s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you don’t want to
But the more you share… The merrier!

Is Ubud Walkable?

in Ubud, Indonesia by @mementomoriblog |  | 8 comments

Hello,

Currently living in Chiang Mai and loving it.

I’m trying to figure out where I’ll go once burning season hits in late Feb, as I don’t want to be here then.

I’m definitely considering Bali - but I don’t ride motorbikes, and I don’t really want to learn if I can help it.

Is there anybody who has lived in Ubud and gotten around entirely by foot? If so, what was your experience like?

How do you work without multiple monitors? I can only carry a MBP 15"

by @tschentscher |  | 39 comments

Hi Nomads!

Starting January 2016 I’m going to be starting a year as a Digital Nomad.
The last 5 years I’ve never worked with less than 2 monitors in front of me.
Sure, I’ve done some café and hotel-room work. But all my biggest project has all been done in front of a stationary setup.

I do webdesign and development and have created a working habbit with several monitors on a large desk. Funny enough this is my biggest concern getting closer to January.

How do i teach myself to work from a 15" screen?
Do you find working from a 15" screen enough or do you have some kind of magical folding screen in your backpack?

If you have any ideas for me keeping a dual-monitor setup (The laptop being the first monitor) I’m all ears!

Regards! And thank you for this delightful Forum!

What shoes/footwear do you pack?

by @danielgenser |  | 24 comments

I’m thinking through what I’m going to bring for footwear. I’d like to limit it to two pairs – one in my bag, one on me. We’re going to be in tropical/beach areas, but also cities. I’d like to be able to look presentable when needed, but also reasonable for non-urban areas, too.

Considering my existing Nike sneakers plus these sneaker/boot hybrid things by Reef – the Reef Spinaker: http://www.zappos.com/reef-spiniker-mid-nb-resrv-collection-black-tan

They seem super lightweight and comfortable (I tried them on at REI the other day). Has anyone else tried them out?

Honestly, this is an awesome place to be if you're actually trying to get work done. It's a bit of an older vibe than Canggu, and there's certainly a big chunk of yogi's kicking around — but I liked it much better than Canggu and found it less pretentious. Plus, you can drive down there in 45mins whenever you want some beach or party vibes. As others mentioned, there's some great coworking spaces, cheap warungs, some really nice spots to stay cheaply if you go just outside of the mad tourist

Bali is amazing, but Canggu isn't really that great -- actually there are SO MANY better places, like Uluwatu, Gili Islands or even Ubud that I can't understand the hype. As almost everyone said below, beaches are crappy, roads are terrible, sidewalks are non-existent and having a motorbike is a must. On the other side, food is great and cafes are pretty reasonable with all those incredible bowls. Anyway I wouldn't recommend it for more than a week.

They say you get what you pay for. After having traveled the previous 4 months in India, Cambodia, VietNam, Myanmar and Thailand, Singapore was so easy! The subway system is a marvel, streets signs were easy to read, everyone speaks English (that just makes it easy for me as an English speaker) it is safe, clean, and parks are gorgeous. I was there as COVID 19 was breaking out fairly fast and that put a damper on my time but I was so happy to be there anyway and plan to go back. For digital

Don't believe the prices on here for an apartment. 686 usd/month refers to an apartment in a high class condo, right in the city centre and seconds away from the BTS(train station). Just remember this, people working at supermarkets make 2 usd/per hour. If you want to live like a local, then you can save a lot of money. If you don't mind a 5-10 minute walk from the BTS, then you can easily get a one bedroom apartment for 300 USD per month, in a high class condo, plus with free golf cart ser

Well. Stayed 3 days close to the beach. Last day on the toilet and 2 days in the bed at home (Czech Rep.). Cought the famous disease from water probably. So my review is probably not objective :-). My nomadic experience about Morroco however is quite poor. Dirty, uncertain, you can't believe anyone, not feeling safe at all ... I am maybe too old for this kind of adventure :-)

Chiang Mai used to be N.1 for the digital nomad life. It is still great and you can find really cheap apartments (300-400$) and restaurants (2-3$ for a main). Wouldn't recommend staying there during the burning season. The best area is Nimman, but it's also the most expensive. You can stay in the old city that's very nice but that gets noisy during the weekend for the night markets. Last but not least, very safe city. All in all would go back in a heartbeat.

I lived in Amsterdam for three years in three different apartments in the center. The place is very noisy and during the lockdown it became painfully obvious that the dutch in general don't really care about whether they bother their neighbors or not. After reading expat Facebook groups, it seems I'm not alone with this opinion. The city is gorgeous, but to be frank, I'm not eager to live there again.

I spent 8 days in Valencia with my boyfriend for new years. We really enjoyed it honestly. We found the city quite walkable, even though it's relatively big, very bike-friendly, felt super safe riding around. Didn't find the public transport to be bad at all, but then again we come from a capital with much shittier public transport. Food is affordable, there's tons of cafes and restaurants everywhere (they were constantly full though). My biggest issue was that barely anyone speaks any English,

There are literally thousands of small cafes and bars that have free, fast WiFi, cheap coffee and good kebabs. If you stay in the absolute cheapest part of town, you will get a different vibe. There are a lot of AirBnB springing up and in the off-season these are very reasonably priced. I can't understand how you could be bored in Athens. So many places to see, so many museums and histo
