Born and raised in Leuven here. It's a university city; between sept and dec, and feb and may, you will find lots of drunk students in the centre at nigh.t The city gets quiet in january and june due to exams. It's dead in the summer. Lots of nice old medieval buildings to see but not much else to do besides drinking beer.

Cons : * Weather is bad especially during winter, always cloudy, no sun. * Hard to make local friends, people are nice but distant. * Quite expensive to eat outside. * Most of the stores they don't accept Visa and Mastercard, you need to have Maestro card. * Housing is expensive and it's hard to find house.

The city is beautiful, and quaint enough that you can bike from end to end in 10-15 minutes. Because it's a student town there's also a lot to do here, even for non-students. By West-European standards the prices are reasonable. Pretty much everyone speaks English fairly well, and Dutch is not too hard to pick up on. The location of Leiden in the Netherlands is also neat: 10 min by train to The Hague, 20-ish to Schiphol Airport, 30 min to Rotterdam, 40-ish
