Any Apple users interested in beta testing my VPN service?

by @portable 9yr  | 19 comments

Hi,

Iโ€™m a digital nomad (coming up to 3 years / 30 countries), software developer and run a VPN network.

Over the past few months Iโ€™ve scaled up the VPN network to include a lot of new countries (and popular nomad destinations) including Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Chile and a load of others.

Several locations have been configured to route across Tier 1 networks to Europe and the US so should help improve international bandwidth. (often the problem with Internet access in some countries is that you have a great connection to local services within that country but poor international connectivity. By connecting to a decent VPN server located in that country and then routing across premium bandwidth you can often get significantly better results).

Iโ€™m wondering if any techy Mac/iPhone/iPad users in some of these locations would be interested in testing and providing feedback on the services. Iโ€™ll give you a free subscription and can work with you to give you the best connection. Youโ€™ll have a network of 50 servers in 30 countries to connect to, and with your feedback hopefully I can tweak the network to give the best performance for other nomads.

Iโ€™m not sure if I can post a link to the apps (donโ€™t want my first post to be seen as spam) so reply to this thread if youโ€™re interested.

Hi thomas, the OS X app is Global VPN and is available here:

PM me your Account Name (as displayed at the bottom of the main screen) and Iโ€™ll extend your subscription (that goes for any other fellow nomads). Global VPN is also available for iPhone/iPad and Android.

I just released a new version and am currently bringing the iPhone/iPad and Android versions of the app up to date to make it easier to use the same on all devices. Weโ€™re also working on a website for the services. Busy times

If anyone has any suggestions then let me know and weโ€™ll see what we can do. Iโ€™ve just upgraded the network and now support PPTP, L2TP, IPSec IKEv1 and IKEv2 and OpenVPN so you should be able to get through most firewalls. Thereโ€™s also traffic redirectors for getting decent European or US connections from remote countries.

Would love to try it out as well. Iโ€™m currently conducting a large review of VPN providers, focused on the needs of DNs. Would love to include the service there if itโ€™s ready for prime time. MBA user, with access to iPhone as well (but not my primary phone).

Cheers

Hey Richard, Iโ€™m happy to Beta Test your VPN. I currently use WiTopia with good results but Iโ€™m assuming yours will be faster.

I have a Mid 2013 Macbook Air and am located in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Perfect! Where in Indonesia? Iโ€™m planning a trip back to the Giliโ€™s in the next few months, maybe hit Lombok!

There are servers on Java, Malaysia and 2 in Singapore. I think I get the best international connectivity from SG with services routing directly to UK and US. The whole region is tricky to get decent European bandwidth too, pretty much everything gets routed via cheap bandwidth to the US.

Am PMing you more info.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Whatโ€™s a good European call & SMS forwarding service?

by @adrienbetweets 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi all

What do you guys use for receiving both sms & calls on a European phone number?

Iโ€™d like to have a phone number that does not change for at least 1 or 2 years.

I did my homework & found this thread but itโ€™s only about US services so I donโ€™t think itโ€™s relevant: Whatโ€™s a good US call and SMS forwarding service?
Also, I looked into Google Hangout but it doesnโ€™t support European phone numbers.

What's a good US call and SMS forwarding service?

by @vong 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

Hi all,

What do you guys use for call and sms forwarding?

Currently I have a Skype US number that forwards to my local phone number. However, it canโ€™t receive SMSโ€™es so thatโ€™s a huge dealbreaker.

Thereโ€™s RingCentral - but that starts at $29/month which is rather pricey.

Any suggestions? Iโ€™d just like to be able to call and text like Iโ€™m still in the US (when Iโ€™m not). Thanks in advance!

Are there any VPN providers specifically suited to nomads?

by @nomadfamily 7yr 7 years ago  | 10 comments

hi, I have been using a free VPN for a while.
Just wondering though, im planning on travelling into china and wanted to know if there were any VPNโ€™s that anyone can recommend that are safe within china.

As I undertstand the Chinese are aware of some VPNโ€™s and have blocked them. Not sure if that is true or not, but would be really great to know more.

Also any one think any particular VPN provider is better suited to nomads and why?

Anyone interested in giving an interview about your nomad lifestyle?

by @gigigriffis 8yr 8 years ago  | 20 comments

Hey guys,

Iโ€™m doing a series of nomad interviews to demonstrate how different we all do this nomad thing. Iโ€™ve just published one on How Fast Do Nomads Travel? (http://gigigriffis.com/how-fast-do-digital-nomads-travel/) and Iโ€™ve got a few coming up on Do Digital Nomads Have Home Bases?, What Are Digital Nomad Work Schedules Like?, How Do Nomads Choose Where to Go Next? Etc.

Iโ€™m looking for people who would be interested in answering some questions and sharing their personal nomadic perspectives. So if thatโ€™s you, let me know.

Also, itโ€™s really important to me to show some diversity, so Iโ€™m particularly interested in interviewing POC and nomads who are from unusual backgrounds (for example: 40+ nomads, retired nomads, nomads with kids, LGBT nomads, etc.).

Do you care about using a shared IP on VPN?

by @refuseillusion 8yr 8 years ago  | 11 comments

When using a VPN you will almost always share your IP with others (several members connect to the VPN server and all members on that server now share the serverโ€™s IP address).
If someone using the same IP address gets flagged, it could pass on to you as well.
A lot of companies have incorporated IP address filters. For example your PayPal account could get limited because you share an IP address with a scammer.

Has using a shared IP resulted in problems for you?

Iโ€™m looking for a great virtual assistant service thatโ€™s affordable. I looked into Zirtual and found it to be rather pricey. Anything out there thatโ€™s more reasonable?
