Any tips for sleeping in an airport?

by @travel 8yr  | 8 comments

What are the best tips you can give me for sleeping in an airport?

Hi folks! Planning a trip on a budget and Iโ€™m finding an 11 hour overnight gap I have in between flights where I can either book a quick airbnb at an odd hour of the night, or live the real nomad life and sleep in the airport!

This is the first time Iโ€™m able to plan staying the night in an airport, so Iโ€™m reaching out to know if thereโ€™s any โ€œdoโ€™sโ€ or โ€œdonโ€™tsโ€.

Appreciate any tips or other viable options!

Thanks guys! Stay nomadic :v:t2:

Iโ€™ve done it a few times in recent years (only as a backpacker), but beware it can be hard on the body. Definitely check sleepinginairports.net as mosgosselin mentioned above โ€“ great info. If you happen to be going to Singapore, they have a hotel in the airport where you can rent a nice room by the hour โ€“ you must book ahead and itโ€™s not cheap but surprisingly, a good 8 hours there is not any more expensive than a single room at a hostel in town. Every airport should be like Singaporeโ€™s!

Thereโ€™s a nice by-the-hour hotel in London Heathrow too!

โ€ฆunfortunately itโ€™s only available in one of the terminals, so I was forced to sleep across some seats. Didnโ€™t get too much shuteye that time around, but it was a unique experience!

Iโ€™ve stayed a few times in the YOTEL at Heathrow. Itโ€™s connected to Terminal 4, not the most convenient and the food service in that terminal is limited. But, what I do is check in, grab the Heathrow Connect to Southall and go for the best Indian food in all of London. Brilliant, Madhus, Ommiโ€™s or Giftos. Plus local shopping. The larger rooms at Yotel are fine, the Internet works well and you sleep well.

Oh man that sounds lovely! My flight was delayed getting into LHR from DUB, so my plans for grabbing a cheap hostel in London and a night of exploring were shot down.

Plus Iโ€™d accidentally left something on my flight (RIP, HydroFlask growler) so it forced me to stay landside until I could talk with lost and found in the morning. Double whammy!

Iโ€™m not sure if itโ€™s the real nomadic experience, sounds more like a gap year backpacker to me  But, hey, if youโ€™re budgeting and want to try it, why not?

Iโ€™ve not slept in an airport except for a few hours quick kip but Iโ€™d make securing my stuff my #1 priority. Noise cancelling headphones #2. The Sleeping in Airports site is definitely worth a look. Some airports encourage it, others actively try to prevent it.

If you are travelling in Asia, itโ€™s worth checking out if the airport has a capsule hotel. They are brilliant and all airports should have them

Check with the airline, if thatโ€™s a forced long layover you might be able to get a hotel voucher. I have a 10h layover tomorrow and Turkish Airlines provides a hotel voucher in Istanbul.

Like what @Voskovek said, go to your airline after you land and see what they can do. Iโ€™ve often just asked and because I did it nicely I got some free vouchers.

Alternatively, just Google โ€œ[airport name] hotelsโ€ and book something within 10 - 15 minutes.

Donโ€™t sleep on the ground, itโ€™s not pleasant

I always check this website before: http://www.sleepinginairports.net/

Some airports are more comfortable than other, some closes at night (yep)โ€ฆ etc.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce 5yr 5 years ago  | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Living in Dubai for a month. Tips?

in Dubai , United Arab Emirates by @cyrilgupta 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

Heya!
I have to be in Dubai by end of the month to finish the formation of my company and residency etc. Iโ€™ve stayed at hotels earlier, but that sounds pretty impractical considering I will be living there nearly for a month.

Anyone got any tips about renting a short-stay apartment for a month? Maybe even a few leads?

What about living in Dubai? I will be working hard, but I donโ€™t want to be bored out of my mind. Places I can hang out, things I can do?

Please share

Tips for nomads in Granada, Spain?

in Granada , Spain by @katieuniacke 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everyone. Iโ€™ve just moved to Granada in Andalucia to live with some friends I met in Mexico. Planning on staying a few months and then seeing where the wind takes me, but in the meantime, I wanted to know if there are any fellow nomads around, or if anyone has any tips for coworking spaces/cafes? Thanks in advance!

Any tips for nomad'ing from Tanzania to South Africa?

in South Africa by @tylertringas 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi nomads! Iโ€™m headed to Tanzania in mid-July and working my way down to Cape Town over about 2.5 months. Itโ€™s my first time in the region. Any tips or warnings for typical nomad concerns in Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique and South Africa?

Iโ€™m anticipating worse than usual wifi speed but any tips on connectivity would be great.

What are the best sites or strategies for accommodation? I usually use Airbnb, hostelworld or booking.com and target guesthouses in the $50/night or cheaper range. Is that realistic?

Most importantly what should we do?! Iโ€™ve already research the obvious highlights: Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Zanzibar, Victoria Falls, etc. Any off the beaten path things to do and/or good spots to post up for a few weeks and enjoy/work?

Thanks

Co-working space - ยฃ110

Looking for a place to hibernate and surf in Jan/Feb/March - any tips?

by @tvr3000 8yr 8 years ago  | 14 comments

Hi all,

For Jan through March Iโ€™m looking for a place that as a) friendly people, b) warm climate, c) surfing, and d) reliable internet (either in cafes or a coworking space).

So far, this is my short list:

  • Canggu, Bali (already was there last year, but too busy with work then)
  • Phillippines (I donโ€™t know where yet, but Iโ€™ve read Baler might be nice)
  • Mexico (but havenโ€™t yet researched)
  • Nicaragua (but havenโ€™t yet researched)

If anyone has some good info on this, please share! : )

Any tips on renting a place in Ubud with decent Internet?

in Ubud , Indonesia by @tvr3000 9yr 9 years ago  | 3 comments

Iโ€™m looking to rent a place for 3 months (or longer) that has relatively fast, reliable Internet.

I know this is Ubud weโ€™re talking about, but Iโ€™m not requiring Korea-like speeds. Anything that around 1MBps (= 4 to 8 megabits per second) and upload-speeds of around 100kbps (ยฑ megabits per second) will suffice, as long as itโ€™s stable.

Can anyone point me in the right direction and/or offer up any tips?
My plan thus far is to contact airbnb owners directly and ask for rates + a screenshot of their internet speeds.

Iโ€™m not on a tight budget, so Iโ€™m willing to spend a bit more.

Thanks so much! : )

Where can I buy a SIM card at Da Nang airport?

in Da Nang , Vietnam by @basicallydan 9yr 9 years ago  | 2 comments

Hey folks,

Headed to Da Nang airport for a stay in Vietnam. Iโ€™d naturally like to get myself a decent SIM card for my phone, and my Googling has revealed some confusion about where and how to buy them. Can anybody share a guide to buying a SIM card at Da Nang airport or somewhere in Hoi An? Ideally a pre-paid SIM with 3G or 4G. Thanks
