Anybody living (or that used to live) in Aruba?

in Aruba by @erikahlehmann | 4yr  | 8 comments

Hi there!

Iโ€™m doing my research on nice places in SA/CA. Iโ€™ve been living in Argentina for the past 4 years and Iโ€™ve only been at the beach for 2 weeks (in Rio) almost 2 years ago. I know, itโ€™s sad

I want my next home to be close to the beach, and Iโ€™ve been hearing great things about Aruba. Iโ€™m not planning on staying another 4 years at the new location, but at least a few months.

Has anyone lived and worked from there? Do they have fast and reliable internet? Is it affordable?

If not Aruba, which other places would you recommend to spend a few months close to the beach that are affordable and with high speed Wi-Fi?

Iโ€™m thinking about staying in SA/CA because of the time zones. I work for an American company, so I think Iโ€™d rather stay in a time zone thatโ€™s not to far away from theirs.

Some other places that have crossed my mind are Guatemala City or Antigua, Quito, Costa Rica (although Iโ€™ve heard itโ€™s expensive)โ€ฆ

I still have a few months to think about it while I finish some paperwork in Buenos Aires, but Iโ€™d like to leave around August/September.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cayman, awesome internet. Financial market forces it to. 4G works a charm there & sister islands too.
Aruba, worked from the AirBnB we stayed in just fine.
Bonaire, hotel where I stayed it was crappy, though wifi in town seemed acceptable.
Curaรงao, AirBnB wifi was just fine.

Iโ€™ve friends in Utila that tell me itโ€™s ok. If youโ€™re serious about your connect get 2 (thereโ€™s two routes in/out & two providers), if youโ€™re less serious and your 1 does go down somewhere in town will use the other and wifi is openly available.

My 2p:

Aruba, way too American/touristy.
Bonaire, great if you scuba dive (I do), or want to.
Curaรงao, in between the two.

Iโ€™ve just done some time in Cayman Islands, which has the best beaches if you ask meโ€”local laws make all beaches public unlike the above. But, itโ€™s not the cheapest. Iโ€™m looking at heading towards Honduras Bay Islands.

This is great! Thanks so much for your input

Iโ€™ve looked at Honduras (Roatan specifically) as well in the past, but Iโ€™m not so sure how good the internet will be. And I guess thatโ€™s an issue with a lot of islands anyways.

Whatโ€™s your experience regarding that been so far? Thatโ€™s always the main issue when working online and traveling, right?

Bocas del Toro, Panama is a good destination in your time zone. Itโ€™s more expensive then Nicaragua or Guatemala, but less so than Costa Rica, it was mentioned a couple of times in the forums so search will bring it up. There are many beautiful islands and itโ€™s more Caribbean than Panamian (is there such a word?) : ) One plus is that itโ€™s cheaper to get there from USA/Europe than to some other Caribbean islands (i.e. long bus ride/short flight to San Jose, CR which has very good deals to many American cities) though of course that greatly depends on your luck and flight searching skills (whatโ€™s the best price youโ€™ve seen to ABC from USA/Europe?).

I havenโ€™t thought about Panama, but Iโ€™d definitely look it up. Iโ€™ve always seen Panama more touristy, and I think it lacks a lot of cultural things to do. So I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s the best option for me. What do you think about that?

Nicaragua and Guatemala are both on my list, so I think Iโ€™ll check those out as well before making any decision. I like the idea of being able to travel easily and cheaply, so Panamaโ€™s maybe worth it if Iโ€™m just planning on staying for a short period of time.

I havenโ€™t looked at prices from USA/Europe yet because Iโ€™m focused on the prices from BA to SA/CA (and itโ€™s not cheap! Thatโ€™s another thing I donโ€™t like about living in Argentina: itโ€™s way too expensive to travel anywhere - even inside the country!).

Iโ€™ll look more into Bocas del Toro, Nicaragua and Guatemala. I was talking to a friend yesterday and he recommended Nicaragua as well. It might be a good option if itโ€™s easy to get in and out of there and also cheap to stay for a while

Yeah, Costa Rica and Panama have rich nature but not much in terms of ancient history โ€“ Maya are to the north, only some Spanish colonial ruins remain. I recommended Bocas del Toro as an alternative to other Caribbean islands actually : ) Itโ€™s very good beach destination in my opinion

I lived in Aruba in 2007 for 6 months. Aruba is great! The internet is reliable. 2007 is long time ago so if itโ€™s still affordable I donโ€™t know. And itโ€™s also a personal question of course. It depends on the quality of life you are used to and what kind of daily budget you have. Itโ€™s more expensive then Thailand and Indonesia ;-).

Aruba is a touristic Island and has a lot of focus on Americans. The beaches are the best, I love Eagle and Druif Beach. I can write a book about why you need to visit it. The vibe, the music, the nightlife, the national park, the restaurantsโ€ฆ itโ€™s great! But donโ€™t stay there too long, itโ€™s a very small island.

I can also recommend Curacao and Bonaire. I lived 2 years on Curacao. Less focus on American tourists. Curacao has more to offer, in terms of events, restaurants and stuff like that. Google the district Pietermaai (little havana ;-)). The beaches on Curacao are different then Aruba. Curacao has little bays which are awesome. Google: โ€˜Grote Knip Curacaoโ€™. Aruba has long white beaches. Curacao only has that around Mambo Beach and that beach is fake.

If you want to know more about these islands you can Skype me if you want: colin.orij

Ayo!

Great! Thanks for your input. Iโ€™ve been looking at Curaรงao as well, but I heard it was more expensive than Aruba. Is it?

Iโ€™m not looking for a fancy and expensive lifestyle. Itโ€™s just not me. I just want to have the beach close to me again for a while (: If I can stay around $1000 a month, that would be perfect. Itโ€™s more or less what Iโ€™m used to here in Argentina.

Omg, Grote Knip is absolutely amazing! I definitely have to go check it out

Iโ€™ve added you on Skype so you can tell me more about it later. Ttys!

Anybody bring their car to Mexico instead of flying?

in Mexico by @digitaldiva | 25d 24 days ago | 1 comment

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone drove to Mexico instead of flying and used their car down there. Iโ€™ve heard bad stories of people driving down there but not sure I believe them. How safe is it to drive through rural areas, and to park in cities? It would be cool to have the car to explore while there.

Do you prefer co-living spaces or hostels or Airbnbs?

by @davda1546 | 1mo 1 month ago | 5 comments

We are hoping to become nomads soon and have booked an AirBnB in September in Goa for our first destination. We are considering what would be the best option for accommodation after that. We are trying to decide between co-living spaces, hostels, or Airbnbs.

What are your experiences of accommodation in terms of the following: reliable wifi, social aspect, pricing, cleanliness, cooking facilities?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard | 6mo 5 months ago | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

How do I ensure that getting refused entry to the UK won't keep me from getting an Australian 462 (work and holiday) visa?

in Australia by @allisonkirschbaum | 1yr 1 year ago | 0 comments

On New Yearโ€™s Day this year, I was refused entry to the UK due to not having proof of funds, an outward-bound plane ticket (I was road-tripping out with a friend via car) and not being able to prove that I had indeed canceled the lease on the apartment I had leased during a prior recent trip.

I havenโ€™t had any entry issues to any of the several countries Iโ€™ve visited after, but now Iโ€™m applying for a 462 visa (work and holiday) visa in Australia, and since Australia and the UK share an immigration info system, I want to make sure getting refused entry wonโ€™t keep me from getting a visa. None of the issues that cropped up in the UK (the proof of funds, the plane ticket, and the apartment) will be an issue in Australia, as Iโ€™ve never traveled there before, donโ€™t know anyone and will have proof of more than sufficient funds for the trip and an outbound plane ticket.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to make the approval process go as smoothly as possible?

Many thanks in advance!

Anybody recommend US health insurance with global coverage?

by @tylertringas | 1yr 1 year ago | 18 comments

Any US nomads found health insurance with global coverage? My current approach has been to have US health insurance, essentially a waste of money but if I ever got very sick I could go home and have coverage. My actual healthcare is a combination of travel insurance (havenโ€™t really used it much though) and paying cash in cheap places like SE Asia and Latin America. The cobbled together approach is neither simple nor very cost-effective. Love to find a product with global coverage that also satisfies Obamacare requirements. Any leads?

Living in Dubai for a month. Tips?

in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by @cyrilgupta | 2yr 2 years ago | 2 comments

Heya!
I have to be in Dubai by end of the month to finish the formation of my company and residency etc. Iโ€™ve stayed at hotels earlier, but that sounds pretty impractical considering I will be living there nearly for a month.

Anyone got any tips about renting a short-stay apartment for a month? Maybe even a few leads?

What about living in Dubai? I will be working hard, but I donโ€™t want to be bored out of my mind. Places I can hang out, things I can do?

Please share

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz | 2yr 2 years ago | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Is anybody a Digital Nomad in the UK and not a resident?

by @creative_nomad_ | 2yr 2 years ago | 6 comments

The situation is that my BF is a UK citizen and I am not. We are traveling around SEA and planning to stop in the UK for 6 months to rekindle funds. Granted, the UK is not the cheapest place to rekindle funds, however, he can work and get a good job there.

I have already done my working visa in the UK so I canโ€™t legally work there again. Iโ€™m a graphic designer and web designer and have decided that I will try and get freelance work to support myself whilst Iโ€™m over there.

My question is more related to tax and visas. I am an Australia citizen so I can get a 3 month tourist visa. Iโ€™m just a little worried about how strict they are over there on visas and questioning finance etc

Has anybody encountered a travel gear mfr that intentionally makes crappy-looking gear?

by @octavient | 3yr 3 years ago | 8 comments

Has anybody ever encountered a travel gear manufacturer that makes gear that is solid and durable, but that is intentionally designed to look old and crappy? For international travel, I want good, durable gear, but Iโ€™m uncomfortable walking around with slick, brand-new-looking, expensive-looking gear (especially with my family in tow). Iโ€™m happy to snatch up any good used gear (reduce, reuse, recycle) that weโ€™re lucky enough to encounter, but selection is limited, and durability is often compromised. Seems like thereโ€™d be a decent market for some durable but ragged-looking travel gear. What i have in mind is luggage, backpacks, laptop cases, smartphone cases, camera bags, infant/toddler carriers, etc. Iโ€™m sensitive to the preppy fad of clueless, well-off westerners dressing up like the poor in naive but trendy mockery, but thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m after, here. I just want good gear that doesnโ€™t put a target on my back as we traipse around various parts of the world. Anybody have any thoughts on thisโ€ฆ?

Any digital agency owners living the nomad lifestyle?

by @nicolas | 3yr 3 years ago | 9 comments

Iโ€™d like to get into conversations with other agency owners with employees, or even create a mastermind group and share experiences around questions like:

  • how you manage teams remotely
  • how you keep them motivated without daily face-to-face discussions
  • how you find and work with customers remotely
  • whether your goal is growth and exit or just lifestyle entrepreneurship
  • etc.

Anyone interested? Thanks!

Living in one EU country with a residence from another EU country?

by @robetus | 3yr 3 years ago | 8 comments

I really thought this had already been asked on here but couldnโ€™t find anything specific. Apologies if it has been asked before and a link would be greatly appreciated. Iโ€™m a US citizen and if I have a residence permit for one Western European country that states I only have to live in the country for 6 months out of the year can I live in another European country for the other 6 months. I plan on EU country hoping every other 6 months to avoid becoming a resident of more than one country.

Is anyone doing this now?

Anybody around Europe over the next few months?

by @paulrose | 3yr 3 years ago | 9 comments

Hi All

Soโ€ฆ a few months ago when I was in Asia, for some reason I decided that it was gonna be too hot over the summer months and I wanted to mix it up with a few months touring Europe. So I had the idea to buy and RV and drive round for a few months.

Meet Teagan

Itโ€™s taken a few months going through the process of getting my license to drive the RV, because itโ€™s so large it wasnโ€™t covered on my standard driving license. Add to that, I had some solar panels fitted for unlimited power, and a massive satellite dish for internet wherever I go.

Iโ€™ve now got my ferry booked out of the UK for September 11th and at the moment have no plans past the first few weeks.

Has anyone on here done anything similar before? Any places recommended, or anyone around Europe over the next few months?

Iโ€™m doing about 3 months worth before heading to Vegas for NYE and around the states for a few months after that before back to Asia for a bit.

Has anybody with a Hong Kong company been through an Offshore Profits claim?

in Hong Kong by @prof | 3yr 3 years ago | 23 comments

Iโ€™ve just hit the 18-month mark of business in Hong Kong ready to submit by first Profit Tax Return. I also have the option of filing an Offshore Profits claim.

The Offshore Profits claim itself seems to be a convoluted, long drawn-out process with significant costs to bare in working with a certified CPA to answer Inland Revenue Department questioning.

Iโ€™d love it if somebody who has been through this already were able to answer the following questions:

  • How long did it take for the claim to be accepted or denied?
  • What was the end result?
  • How much did the IRD dig into each transaction?
  • How much did you pay your agent to deal with the offshore claim?

Any insights are much appreciated! :slightly_smiling:

We are at the beginning of a very interesting journey to eventually establish work spaces and accommodation in Panama.
But before we start, weโ€™d love to figure out how Panama is perceived by you, US time zone and currency are any advantages ? Would you prefer more urbanic or beachfront locations ?
All feedback will be highly appreciated.
Cheers =)
