Anyone here who doesn't officially have a residency?

by @absokim 9yr  | 16 comments

Hi everyone,

Is it illegal to not have a residency?

Iโ€™m from Sweden and make all my money online. Now Iโ€™m going to become a non-resident for tax purposes.

My thinking is that I want to live in Australia for a few months of the year and then live in 2 other places a year. Basicallyโ€ฆ Iโ€™m looking to escape tax and not have an official residency anywhere. At the same time, Iโ€™m gonna take great care avoiding to stay long enough in each place so Iโ€™m not obliged to pay tax.

The thing isโ€ฆ On the visa into Australia I have to type in residency, and when I donโ€™t legally have one, what the heck am I suppose to type in?

Could I just type in my old address in Sweden? (Or maybe my parentโ€™s address). Or would that be considered illegal seeing I donโ€™t live there but more importantly I donโ€™t have residency there anymore (though I will of course always remain a citizen)?

Curious to hear your thoughts about this and if maybe someone is already doing this and living without an official residency.

(The ultimate goal with all of this is of course to avoid giving away half of my hard-earned money every month while being able to live a more comfortable life in 3 places a year)

Hi there,

Iโ€™m from Switzerland and have a similar situation. Iโ€™m trying to get an international health insurance but always get asked for a permanent or official residence which I donโ€™t have since Iโ€™m traveling full-time. Also I have no idea if it is kind of illegal not having a permanent residence and where I have to pay taxes, so I was curious if you did already find answers on these matters?

@ivan 8yr

For a lot of countries, even if you spend less than the 180 (or 183 or whatever rules your country uses), try to maintain as few ties as possible to your citizenship country.

Sell/Rent out your place, do NOT leave it empty with your things in it.

Avoid using your bank accounts in your country, there are options in SE Asia, EU and the US for non-residents to open accounts there, including most likely in the currency that you usually deal with and a card that you can use at ATMs worldwide.

Sell your car if youโ€™re not going to use it for six months, youโ€™re better off getting another one later.

Sign up to a library card in the places you move to, attend a church, join a social club.

Should you face the unfortunate scenario of being asked to PROVE your non-residence, you will have to do two things:

  1. Prove your lack of residence in your citizenship country (per above)
  2. Prove your residence somewhere. Now here is where tourist entry sucks. You are a tourist and it will be difficult to convince anyone that you have more ties to a country in which you can not work, and live for longer than half a year.

So what can you do about it? The easiest way to get rid of some of this hassle is to establish a residency elsewhere, even if you donโ€™t make use of it. EU citizen? Find a place with low income tax, head there, register at the local municipality for a residence permit.

Under 30? Make use of a work and travel visa.

Feel free to get creative with this, student visas, temporary residency permits, there are a lot of things you can do to establish yourself somewhere that is not your โ€œhomeโ€ country.

@jessel 8yr

Depends on your intentions and behaviour whilst in Australia, not just the visa you have. Residency is determined by many factors so itโ€™s too hard to say without more information. Typically for a digital nomad who works and travels, the ATOโ€™s view would be that coming to Australia to live and work for a limited period of time is considered their normal behaviour and therefore, they can be considered an Australian tax resident.

You might want to be careful with your arrangements when coming to Australia. The residency rules might catch you even if you are only here for less than 6 months. (Iโ€™m an Aus Tax accountant btw).

I have a 12 month tourist visa for Australia, what do you mean by โ€œcareful with your arrangementsโ€? I think Iโ€™ll just be considered a tourist for 12 months, no?

Your main question is โ€œIs it illegal to not have a residencyโ€

Well, Residency and Citizen ship are not the same and have a residency is the easiest thing in world and you anyway will need one for many things (paypal, credit card, whatever)

Residency can be a โ„… address and NO COUNTRY in the world will check this address if you enter it as a tourist.

How the law in your country is about I donโ€™t know I could only tell from Switzerland, and I think that will not help you much.

To conclude, I do not pay taxes and still have a residency, but I am not registered as a living and working person in my home country because I told to the Resident Control, I move to a unknown location in the world for a unknown amount of time.

I still have a โ„… address though.

It is possible to say you are โ€œstatelessโ€ meaning you donโ€™t have a citizenship or residency anywhere. It looks bad but technically not illegal. I knew someone who was once upon a time before getting Canadian citizenship but that was his way of avoiding saying that he was from essentially a terrorist country, he was coming from Europe which made it a bit more palatable Iโ€™m guessing.

In Uruguay is the same. If you live in the country for more than 183 days a year you have tax obligations with the state.

@levelsio 9yr

If youโ€™re not a resident anywhere for over 180 days (this varies per country), youโ€™re taxable in the country of your citizenship. And it usually happens when you come back.

In addition, if you did live somewhere else for 180+ days, youโ€™ll have to prove it to your countryโ€™s IRS.

Thereโ€™s a great chance this doesnโ€™t happen as itโ€™s hard for them to figure out (lack of resources), but being a non-resident does not remove you from paying tax in most countries.

Especially not North + Western European ones.

@levelsio The idea that if you donโ€™t have residency somewhere then it falls back to your domicile is categorically false for a lot of countries - New Zealand and the UK are just two examples.

Every nationality is different. In your case go ahead and write Swedish address. Your strategy is basically sound since Sweden wont let you leave for no tax jurisdiction. Australia will serve your purpose as they are equally bad. So just go ahead and mark your time in Australia until you make another step to become tax exempt.

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 4yr 4 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack 4yr 4 years ago  | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce 5yr 5 years ago  | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Anyone here resident in Portugal with incorporation elsewhere in the EU? Need some advice

in Portugal by @solardive 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everyone!

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโ€™m not planning to go full erm, โ€œtax optimisationโ€, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.

Iโ€™ve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโ€™m a EU citizen), but I donโ€™t want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?

Thanks!

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

in Sihanoukville , Cambodia by @keybrownhill 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!

Anyone (almost) exclusively traveling in Latin America?

by @danielaf 7yr 7 years ago  | 7 comments

Is there anyone around who spends most of their time in Latin America? After short trips to Peru earlier this year, Iโ€™ve now come back to Lima to stay for another three months and will then head to Buenos Aires. Lima will be kind of my home base but I aim to explore as much as possible of Latin America in the next couple of years. No interest in Asia, Africa or North America and no intention to go back to Europe.

Anyone walking around the world while working?

by @michaltakac 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey guys,

Is there anybody who loves walking that much? Iโ€™m thinking about this for about 3 years now, and since I finished university this year, I could possibly plan for this huge trip and start sometime next year. I have no commitments, no girlfriend, some money saved and pretty strong motivation. I like to travel low cost (couchsurfing, exploring cities by walking, cooking own meals, sleep in a tent if needed).

Small background about me: Iโ€™ve been working 5+ years (and still working) as a software engineer remotely (full-stack, web, mobile, VR), trying to not spend everything and save a little here and there (plus some index funds, mutual funds and holding few cryptocurrencies). Walking is big part of my life since itโ€™s something like meditation, great time for creative thinking, research and solving problems. Usually my daily routine involves 10-20km of walking (some in the morning, some in the evening). So far longest stretch was 55km, aiming to raise it to at least 100km during next month. Also love to track everything (Fitbit Charge 2 + Gyrosco.pe).

Iโ€™m thinking if itโ€™s possible to walk around the world in 5 years while working occasionally during mornings or evenings (own web/mobile app, writing blog) and at the same time complete a PhD in Process Control (got an offer to work with great professor on an interesting thesis using augmented reality, for which I only need a smartphone, my Macbook and ability to once in a while consult with him over phone/skype).
