Are people giving false info to attract DNs to their city

by @ozarm 9yr  | 4 comments

Hi Nomads,

I live in Poland since 2007 as an expat. I lived in Warsaw, Wrocław, Katowice and Łódz and I truely don’t understand how you got your infos for Poland.

Wrocław is the most expensive city in Poland ??? I pay my rent 1.5 times more in Warsaw and restaurants are also at least 50% more expensive.

Lublin is the city with the most fun? Really, What about Krakow or Wrocław or even Warsaw?

Internet is 2Mbps in Wrocław??? Why are there big compagnies like IBM, HP, Melon Bank of New York, Swiss Bank, etc … in Wrocław if the internet was so bad. I have a flat in Wrocław and my internet connection is 30 Mbps with T-Mobile.

It looks like some people are giving false informations to attracts DNs to their cities. What do you think about it ?

How to correct those infos ? I already tried to correct the info about internet connection in Wrocław but I didn’t see any changes.

@grum 9yr

Your personal experiences are not exactly an accurate representation of a city’s stats. Take for example your own statement “IBM, HP, Melon Bank of New York, Swiss Bank, etc” - all these exist where I am right now. In fact, each of those companies are within a 10 minute walk from me. In my apartment I am on a sub-1Mbps connection with no ability to upgrade no matter how much money I realistically could throw at the problem. If I go to my office, I have a quad-100Mbps connection. Which is the accurate representation of my city? Neither. My city’s average is around 15Mbps.

All that being said, Nomadlist isn’t an accurate representation either. It is a rough guide to locations built upon intelligence gathered from multiple sources. It would be impossible to accurately represent a statistic that everyone would agree on. Your definition of fun is different to mine. I like jazz clubs, you might hate them. Who is right?

Look at sites like Numbeo which is the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide that continually is criticised for being inaccurate - regardless of the fact that tens of thousands of people contribute to it.

You might have correctly submitted changes however A single person’s experiences will have a minor impact on data constructed from a larger source. This is the nature of statistics.

From the FAQ:

What is the source of your data?

It started out as a crowdsourced spreadsheet. That spreadsheet held about 25 cities. That was a great start, but crowdsourced data has by nature challenges with consistency. For example, some people have more expensive taste than others and will tell you the rent in a city is higher than the actual average.

To mitigate this, we’ve hired city editors to research data by a strict set of guidelines. That means I now have more consistent data. I also have way more cities than before. Since the start we’ve added over 500 of the biggest cities in the world and continue to add more every day.

Your data on X is wrong!

Please click the city, and then click the edit button on the to right to and submit a change. I’ll process it and it’ll update in a few days.

@ozarm 9yr

Hi Grum,

All listed cities in Poland have at least a 20Mbps internet except Wrocław 2Mbps, there is really a problem here.

I know all those cities in Poland and lived in some of them. Even if it is my personnal opinion, I have experienced them and can compare them.

I know Wrocław very well because I lived there many years and it looks like all the info about Wrocław were deliberatelly wrong.
When I see the cities which are listed I feel sorry for the DNs who will avoid Wrocław to go to Lublin or Katowice.

I would be happy to help …

Agree. Based on personal experience, found info about Poland and other locations very inaccurate.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- 🛂 Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- 🎓Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- 🏛 Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Bali to focus on attracting remote workers when the island reopens for tourism

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 0 comments

When reopening for tourism, Bali says it will focus on attracting remote workers to choose the island as their workplace:

"We will focus on a new pattern of how Bali is not just for leisure, but indeed to work in Bali as well"

How do you find the public transport information of your next destination?

by @nunoarruda 5yr 5 years ago  | 11 comments

Probably most of you do as I do, Google it first and then research further, if needed, on official transportation websites, travel guides, blogs, etc.

I travel each month to a new city and I find this task tedious, sometimes there’s not enough information in English or there might be a handy travel planning app or uber-like app that I’m not aware of.

I wish there were a “nomad list” website or app for transport information where you would choose a city and be given all the transportation options (Bus? Tram? Subway? etc), how/where to buy tickets/passes and any additional useful information (trip planner, apps, maps, etc).

Do any of you relate to this?

PS: I’m a developer and I might actually try and create something to “fix” this if a lot of people are experiencing this same “annoyance”.

Anyone interested in giving an interview about your nomad lifestyle?

by @gigigriffis 8yr 8 years ago  | 20 comments

Hey guys,

I’m doing a series of nomad interviews to demonstrate how different we all do this nomad thing. I’ve just published one on How Fast Do Nomads Travel? (http://gigigriffis.com/how-fast-do-digital-nomads-travel/) and I’ve got a few coming up on Do Digital Nomads Have Home Bases?, What Are Digital Nomad Work Schedules Like?, How Do Nomads Choose Where to Go Next? Etc.

I’m looking for people who would be interested in answering some questions and sharing their personal nomadic perspectives. So if that’s you, let me know.

Also, it’s really important to me to show some diversity, so I’m particularly interested in interviewing POC and nomads who are from unusual backgrounds (for example: 40+ nomads, retired nomads, nomads with kids, LGBT nomads, etc.).

DNs with US tax homes, how do you deduct travel expenses?

by @sumx 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

First post here, so be gentle

I am a half time digital nomad with a US tax home and tax season is coming up. Many of my travel expenses are legitimate business expenses and I’m sure others here have similar circumstances. I have a tax guy I’m generally very happy with and their advice is for me to deduct per diem meal & incidental expense (M&IE) rates as posted by the GSA for business travel days within the US, but actual M&IE for business travel days abroad since my out of pocket expenses beyond air / lodging tend to be much much lower while overseas. The logic seems solid, but it seems odd to approach deductions for domestic / international travel completely differently.

Generally, my nicer meals abroad tend to be either comped (press visits) or included in my lodging expense (hello executive lounge). I’m sure many other digital nomads fit a similar profile.

I’ve seen a number of resources that emphasize that spending less than the GSA/DOS per diem on meals and incidental expenses effectively gives you a free tax break for being frugal. For this reason (and despite my tax guy’s advice) I’m finding it hard not to claim the full per diem amount while overseas. I’ve been in some very expensive locations with very high per diem rates per the Department of State including London, Paris and Dubai that would make for large deductions .

My question for the other digital nomads here with US tax homes is: how do you handle deducting your business related travel expenses? If you were in Dubai on business for a full day and the Department of State per diem meal and incidental rate was $183 / day, but you only paid $20 for food and $10 for cabs - would you still deduct 50% of $183 for the maximum benefit? If another member of your business was travelling with you would you deduct 50% of $183 x2?

Options for DNs to stay and live in New Zealand for 1-2 years?

in New Zealand by @zoxel 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

I already have a remote job that I like and do not want to change it. I was thinking of moving to NZ in order to live there for a while - may be one or two years or more if me and my wife like to be there.
But it looks like tourist visa will not allow me us to stay there more than 9 month and other visas require some job offer which is not easy to get. So I was thinking if there is any simple way to move there except finding a new job binded to location in NZ.
Me and my spouse are Russian citizens.

Can you complete this survey for Harvard University about DNs?

by @marinajaneiko 9yr 9 years ago  | 2 comments

Hey fellow nomads! I’ve been working with a Harvard professor and her team helping them with their study on digital nomads, and now they’d hugely benefit from your help as well.

This is one of the first academic studies on digital nomadism and the fact that even the academic world has taken interest in this phenomenon is super exciting!

Long story short - this is an open invitation to digital nomads to contribute to the study by filling in a short survey on financial sustainability of this life/work style. If you want to learn more about the study - I published the interview with Harvard team on Nomadlist Stories.

Thanks in advance! Feel free to ask me questions about the study.
