As a Software Engineer, how did you get your first gig?

by @jmnsf 9yr  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

Iโ€™m planning to start working remotely come October and was wondering what are the best strategies for getting a first remote job? Iโ€™ve stumbled upon many that are US-only (Iโ€™m in Europe) or for seasoned remote workers, so Iโ€™m wondering it thereโ€™s some โ€œhackโ€ to get the ball rolling.

Would love to hear your stories

Have you tried approaching your current employer about switching to a remote position?

Alternatively previous employers or other contacts you have built up over the years are also good places to start.

The advantage is that those are people who know your skills, so it makes it easier to sell yourself, as they should know your skill level already. Selling the โ€œremoteโ€ part can be tricky thoughโ€ฆ

Here is an article I saw this morning which can help with that:
http://www.businessinsider.stfi.re/6-tips-for-convincing-your-boss-to-let-you-work-from-home-2015-8?IR=T&sf=vjdow

As mentioned in the article, a trial period is what I always suggest as well and usually worked for me over the years when I tried to convince resistant employers to allow me to work from home.

I was actually sort of remote working on my current employer, but not in Software Engineering, and I donโ€™t want to continue in that position.

I also wish to leave the Portuguese job market for several reasons and that entails getting a position outside

Thanks for the tips and link, Iโ€™ll check it out!

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Gaming Cheat Software Offshore Incorporation

by @pixels 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

Greetings Nomads,

I recently closed a US company that was used to sell cheats or hacks for popular games due to imminent litigation.

I have just recently embarked on a similar venture, but working as a contractor. Myself, and my lead developer have just found ourselves in the position of not being paid and will need to re-establish ourselves.

Due to my experience in marketing, distribution and management I know running a company myself would still be a successful venture, I just do not want to run it out of the US.

Due to the nature and risk of litigation from large gaming companies I believe moving offshore will be the path I should take. I spoke with my attorneys, who basically made it sound like it would be impossible to set up without physically living somewhere, based on my past experience with these guys, and paying tens of thousands of dollars to protect myself just for them to say โ€œitโ€™s best to shut downโ€ the moment we were contacted by a gaming company, I am going to assume itโ€™s their lack of experience.

My questions are:

  1. As a service likely in the same realm as Adult Services or Gambling, with myself residing in the US and my Lead dev residing in Europe, what country would be a good option to set up with fair tax that cant easily be pressured by US or European game producers?

  2. In said country should I find and contact legal council there instead of using US attournies to fumble through this charging me exponentially more to just relay info and elongate the process?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Best way to make money as a software developer?

by @grantlyk 8yr 8 years ago  | 3 comments

So as the title suggests, whatโ€™s the best way to make enough cash to support a lifestyle of coding on the move?

Iโ€™m currently a software developer that works for startups, but when it comes to coding iโ€™m quite happy to more or less code anything.

What iโ€™m mainly asking for is validation that someone currently has this lifestyle from coding and did they find that some ways of using it to make money were easier/had more benefits than others?

Thanks and any responses are welcome.

How do I get a software engineer job with remote work possible?

by @ubik 9yr 9 years ago  | 1 comment

I am a software engineer with 4 years of experience. I have been working for several companies in the software business, and I think Iโ€™m done with working in an office, 9-5, small talk in the coffee machine, etc. I just canโ€™t stand it anymore. I donโ€™t like the idea of sticking around an office, working there with a lot of distractions and pointless interruptions because I am supposed to be more โ€œproductiveโ€.
I am skilled, hard-worker and dedicated. I love being part of a team, and part of a meaningful project in which I believe, and in which I can contribute to a remarkable growth and evolution of a valuable product/service.
I have handled website development of all kinds (mostly AngularJS + Bootstrap in the last year), Android apps, and Java development. I have a quite nice resume and cool projects behind me, and a deep understanding of software projects management (Scrum / Git / testingโ€ฆ)
But I am totally lost in how could I get a job that allows me remote work. I d I have tried looking for jobs in remoteok.io, but when youโ€™re not from US or not willing to be there the opportunities are way less than expected.
I am not looking for a huge salary/conditions, just the chance of working in a project in which I can give my best, while I enjoy an Internet connection from Spain, Slovenia or wherever is my next destination.
If you know how I could start looking for my perfect remote work, or know someone who is looking for someone like me, I say thank you so much in advance.

PD: Sorry if this kind of question is not suitable here, or has been asked before. Please tell me or move it if needed.
