Best 3G/4G carrier for Bali?

by @jruz 9yr  | 7 comments

Hi, Im going to spend 2 month in Bali mainly in Ubud.
Iโ€™m getting a Hubud membership but donโ€™t want to be trapped there all the time, so I want some reliable mobile connection.

So far Iโ€™ve been checking out:

From the coverage maps on their websites, seems they all cover pretty well the Kuta area, but but other areas not.

My usage is mainly: Github, Slack and one daily Video Call.

Do you have some recommendation on this? I was thinking on Indosat.

Thanks!

Just did my 2 month stint in Bali for this year.

3G in 2015 is much better than 2014. About 2x faster.

2014 a good speed was around 3-4Mbps
2015 a good speed is around 5-8Mbps
Upload/Download ratio can vary wildly, and 3G can drop out often.

Itโ€™s over congested in most popular places so you can ignore the above speeds in practical circumstances. Ubud central was dropping out to Edge speeds very often, (though Penestanan where I stayed a week scored a consistent and reliable 5-6Mbps). Canggu (Batu Balong beach) was unusable, always on Edge 50kbps.

Many places are on fiber Internet this year, I was getting 3-8Mbps in many restaurants and even a few homestays.

All speeds are testing to servers within Indo, expect much less if you are skyping to further flung places (like 4x slower is not uncommon). In general the pipes leading out of Indo have improved for 2015, IMO weโ€™re seeing 2x the International bandwidth as 2014 which apparently was an atrocious year.

XL and Smartfren also provide 4G in Bali.

4G with Telkomsel (the only 4G provider in Bali right now) works pretty well in the south (Kuta, Denpasar, Seminyak, Kerobokan). Youโ€™ll only get 3G in Ubud. Stick with Telkomsel (Simpati) anyway. It seems to be the most reliable. Always buy a data โ€˜packetโ€™ otherwise youโ€™ll go through your credit (pulsa) really quick.

just tested with my TSEL 3G, looks pretty good but itโ€™s not stable. I donโ€™t think they have 4G in Indonesia.

I think most people are on Telkomsel, but honestly they all suck in Bali. Itโ€™s slow as hell.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Best American phone carrier for nomads

by @tylertringas 5yr 5 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m surprised this isnโ€™t anywhere on the forum yet. But just a pro tip for Americans about to start a nomad adventure. T-mobile offers unlimited SMS & data in 120 countries for FREE with any of their (already pretty cheap) plans. Itโ€™s ideal if you plan to be back in the US for any part of the year, but I honestly would consider it even if youโ€™re going to be entirely out of the country.

You get bumped down to much slower 3G speeds, but itโ€™s free and works as soon as you land. Can be super helpful before youโ€™ve sorted yourself out with a local SIM. I usually keep my T-mobile SIM in my iPhone all the time and then buy a local SIM and drop it in my pocket wifi for both laptop and iPhone when needed. I keep my local US number and just use it (itโ€™s like $0.05/min in most places) for important clients calls so they donโ€™t have to bother with Skype.

Iโ€™m not affiliated at all, just a happy customer. Anybody found a better deal worth mentioning?

How to find a villa in Bali?

by @juliakostreva 6yr 6 years ago  | 3 comments

My husband and I are looking for a place with nice weather, fast internet, comfortable/modern/nice housing, (hopefully walk to town/shops) and budget friendly for 2-3 months in June-July-August 2018. We are looking at Canggu, Ubud, Bali, Seminyak. I canโ€™t seem to find a good house (the entire place) for less than $1400USD on airbnb, TripAdvisor, VRBO, or Facebook groups. Can anyone recommend a realtor or agent in Bali/Canggu/Ubud that can help me find a place thatโ€™s nice? Or if itโ€™s just unrealistic- where in Southeast Asia (or surrounding) area would you recommend for that kind of nice town, fast internet, and good weather in June, July, August? Thank you!

Am I being silly by worrying about getting Zika in Bali? ๐Ÿ˜•

by @metamas 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

Bali was at the top of my short-list of places to go DM for 1-3 months until I saw it had the โ€œZykaโ€ tag on Nomad List :scream: . Iโ€™m not super read-up on the whole state of Zyka, other than occurrences of infection being on a decline (for now), but I am a worrisome enough person about such things that it has got me reconsidering. Though, it still seems to not be stopping the rate of DMs visiting Baliโ€ฆ

Is there cause for large concern here, or I am just being a nut? โ€ฆItโ€™s been known to happen pretty frequently over such things :anguished: :face_with_thermometer: :mask:

How is the quality of wifi & 3G in Amed, Bali?

in Amed , Indonesia by @adrienbetweets 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi all!

I am considering going for 1+ month in Amed (to get more into freediving).

I need to be able to make Skype calls & other work-related tasks. I need a speed equivalent to one allowing me to watch Youtube videos.

Ubud is way more connected in comparison, so I donโ€™t expect anything wonderful.

Wondering if anyone has done this before & if yes: what 3G
provider they used, or what cafe/restaurant/hotel had a good/reliable
enough wifi connection.

Note that I went to Amed last year & the 3G connection on the 2 providers I used at the time was terrible. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m asking for help.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I also posted this question on travel.stackexchange.com/questions/82403/quality-of-wifis-3g-reception-in-amed-bali

What's the difference between Ubud and Canggu in Bali?

in Canggu , Indonesia by @edmoyse 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Hey nomads,

Iโ€™m hoping for some advice from people whoโ€™ve lived in Ubud or Canggu. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each place? If youโ€™ve lived in both, which did you prefer and why? (e.g. surfing vs yoga, or varying WiFi availability, or better accommodation, or number of nomads)

Thanks!

What's a great place to stay & work at Bali?

by @allancaeg 8yr 8 years ago  | 5 comments

About to spend 20 days in Bali, mainly to work. Looking to mingle with fellow nomad entrepreneurs.

Whatโ€™s a good combination of a place to stay and cowork? Hoping the lodging place is close to the work place. I hear that riding scooters is typical in Bali, but Iโ€™m not keen. Walking distance/affordable cab rides would be great.

Not yet familiar regarding cities in Bali, so I donโ€™t have a strong preference between Ubud, Denpasar, and Canggu. I just want whatever works best for the purpose of meeting fellow nomads who are working on their stuff.

Whats's a good place to work and surf in Bali?

by @anca_paul 8yr 8 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone!

Iโ€™m looking for a place to stay in Bali - to have a good stable connection, and to be close to a few surfspots. From what Iโ€™ve read on the forum, Ubud is around 1h form a break, which is quite far away.

I will probably go for an apartment, but knowing the location/city first would help a lot! Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Looking for an LTE carrier/plan that covers most of Europe and is good for tethering?

by @thom801 8yr 8 years ago  | 13 comments

Iโ€™m going to be traveling through and working in many countries in Europe this year and Iโ€™m hoping to either use my T-Mobile iPhone 6 (should work based on my research) or I can buy a hotspot to tether internet. This way I can work anywhere and not have to be asking for wifi passwords etc all the time. Does anyone know a good carrier/plan/hotspot? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also: Iโ€™m always looking for great designers and developers to work with. Contact me if youโ€™re interested. I have plenty of work for you

What is the best mobile carrier for a foreigner in USA?

by @wcitizen 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi DN community! Iโ€™m going to spend 4 month in US and wondering if somebody can recommend me cheap, but reliable=), mobile operator. Requirements:

  • simcard should be suitable for my unlocked iPhone
  • minor usage of texting and callings
  • minor usage of internet data, but with 4G support
Hope this makes sense. Happy to add more specific info, if needed.

Cheers!
