Best place to stay for a couple of month in Chile?

in Chile by @borowiis 8yr  | 3 comments

Hi! I need some advice on where to stay in Chile for a couple of months coming winter (summer in South America)

My personal criteria are:

  • nature close by : ocean/mountains (or better both) for weekend getaways
  • walkable : nice stroll after work: parks, waterfronts etc. will do
  • internet: I can live with 1Mbps up/down and latency around 100ms so even not-too-atrocious mobile 3g will do : )
  • transportation: easy to get to other interesting places (I understand that the easiest place is Santiago, but well, seems like it fails other categories )
  • something for kids: we can do with one playground in town, but life is difficult without any other kids
  • Iโ€™m not too worried about coworking places and other digital nomads actually : ) But nice to have

I want this question to be useful to other people as well so I would appreciate any comments really. I found only one topic so far, โ€˜how was Santiago for digital nomads?โ€™. Letโ€™s give Chile more love (comments).

Thanks, Borys

Hi @borowis .

Iโ€™m a chilean, and I lived many years in santiago and viรฑa del mar (from santiago to the coast).

I Agree pretty much with everything that @floc said.

Other cool place maybe Viรฑa del mar. Viรฑa is a beach city, has many beautiful places nearby, and its close enough from santiago. Great place for the summer, but may get a little crowded on January and February. Good if youโ€™re looking to have fun, but not so much if youโ€™re looking for somewhere to relax.

Santiago has the benefit of being a large city where you can find everything you need, but may get really crowded and the air its very polluted. But if yourโ€™e coming on summer it may get way too hot and dry.

Puerto varas is a really beautiful place and you get to see the beauty of the south of chile. It may get very rainy and cold every now and then on the summer.

Hope this is helpful

@floc 8yr

Santiago is actually close to nature too. Itโ€™s one of the few cities in the world, where you can ski in the morning and go to the beach in the afternoon.

That said, if you like more nature, I would try northern Patagonia. I stayed about 2 months in Puerto Varas near lake Llanquihue and it didnโ€™t get boring.

PV is a beautiful and quiet tourist town, very walkable with a beach, lots of cafes and restaurants and the Chilean version of a Walmart. Thereโ€™s a very small expat community, who are working in the tourist sector. In summer thereโ€™s some kind of festival just about every weekend on the main square.

Thereโ€™s some German influence in PV and around the lake from the 1800s immigrations, most noticable in Frutillar. You can go there by bike or by bus.

Buses take you to every other place around the lake and also to:

  • Petrohue Waterfalls
  • Lago Todos Santos for Hiking
  • Puerto Montt for the closest city (not the most beautiful city in the world)
For more interesting places including perfectly cone-shaped Osorno Volcano, you can book a tour.

Interesting overnight trips in the area include:

  • Cochamo Fjord and National park for great hiking and sports climbing
  • Valdivia for a lively university city with beaches and a famous German brewery
  • Chiloe island for special island culture and very laid back Chileans (best with own transport and 3+ days)
  • Bariloche, Argentina is just over the border and also in a very beautiful setting close to 7 lakes.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Val

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Which is the most viable location for a young couple moving to Seoul?

in Seoul , South Korea by @iamjamesrodgers 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

Out of the 3 Areas which would be most beneficial for a foreigner moving to SK?
(If you have experience with areas specifically Iโ€™d love to discuss the specific schools that are offering her a position - Not posting that here for obvious reasons.)

My Girlfriend has received 3 contract offers in Seoul/Surrounding area:

i) Dobonggu
ii) Songpa-gu
iii) Bundang, Gyenggido

Background knowledge:
We love being physically active through sport and weight-lifting, love exploring food culture, need good Coffee and live very modestly in terms of going out/expenditure.

Have you been to Santiago de Chile? How was it?

in Santiago , Chile by @andreadardon 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

With my boyfriend weโ€™re on a year long trip and weโ€™re currently in Europe. But weโ€™re thinking about going down to Chile to change environments (and because Schengen).
Weโ€™re both fluent in Spanish, and I am Central American, but Iโ€™d like to know what Chileโ€™s like for digital nomads: internet speeds, coworking spaces, commuting, safety, etc.

Also, how easy/cheap is it to fly to other South American cities?

Any recommendations, stories or thoughts are welcomed :slightly_smiling:
