Can Europeans also fly cheaper using credit cards and gain miles?

by @rxs 9yr  | 3 comments

I hear more and more about digital nomads (mainly from the US and Canada) flying cheap (almost for free) by taking advantage of bonuses given by banks / credit card companies. Iโ€™m not exactly sure how the system works.

Is it also possible to do for Europeans ? If so, how ?
If not, do know any other hacks to fly cheaper ?

Many thanks for your help.

Check BA !

I usually donโ€™t focus on miles. I just buy the cheapest flight that suits me regardless of the airline or miles. I never had enough miles to do anything with them.

But with Brittish Airways it was different.
A one-way cross Atlantic flight got me enough miles that I could use to pay for a flight from London to Spain (I had to pay some fees still but it was much cheaper than any other flight) and I still had a few miles left which saved me another ยฃ20 on a later flight to Hamburg.
That was a few years ago, but I think itโ€™s still the same.

In recent years air miles do not accrue nor buy as much as they used to. The sign-up bonuses were never that great. The reason being is increased competition, thin margins and volatile oil prices. The advice given today (for Europeans) is use air miles to upgrade your flight rather than buying a ticket. Multi-stop tickets can offer savings, flying from cities with less airport tax can help. When using Skyscanner go incognito so your previous searches arenโ€™t known. Try from different geo-locations & currencies using a proxy. If youโ€™re using an Apple device, some websites will show you higher ticket prices because of your propensity to spend more on IT hardware. You can spoof your User Agent with plugins. Good luck!

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

Best way to connect with "local" nomads using Nomadlist?

by @migueltic 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi, Iโ€™ve seen that Nomad List offers different options that could work for connecting with other nomads that are in the same place as me (forum, Slack, user maps, matches and maybe even more options I havenโ€™t seen), but Iโ€™m not sure what is the best/recommended way to use all these options.

Should I use all of them? Start with a message in the forum and/or Slack?

Sending private messages to a lot of people feels a little bit โ€œaggressiveโ€. And matches are not based on current location if I understood it correctly.

By the way, I just arrived at Budapest

How much Data are you using per month?

by @jdiefenthaler 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

I am trying to figure out three things. An average of how much data everyone uses per month, a low end of how little data is used, and a high end of how much data can be used? I am not interested in your methods of acquiring data. I am just interested in how much you use as a whole. This includes both work data usage and your personal data usage.

Health Insurance for Europeans?

by @patrickheneise 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi there, Iโ€™m currently looking at Allianz Global and IM Global as a health insurance for long-term travel in Asia. Any experiences with those two or are there better options for European residents?

Are there cards similar to the APEC Business Travel Card that Europeans are eligible for?

by @dpt 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

I heard from an American friend that he has several cards similar to the APEC Business Travel Card (link to Wikipedia ) that allow him to get priority treatment at immigration line in certain countries.
I was very intrigued and quickly checked up on the card, but it seems to be only available to citizens of APEC-member nations.

I was wondering if anyone here uses such cards, what your experiences with them are (specifically, Iโ€™m interested in cards available for Europeans/Germans).

How to get around blocked credit card transactions?

by @nomadaccountant 7yr 7 years ago  | 15 comments

it seems like Visa have gotten more tight recently and itโ€™s touch and go whether each transaction will go through. Sometimes it does but often now I am getting declined. The bank knows my locations but in the background Visa seem to be blocking a lot regardless and they are harder to notify. I am using paypal where possible because it doesnโ€™t get blocked, but thatโ€™s only good for a limited number of places.
Anyone else getting worn out by the payment approval games?

Experiences using 3G amplifier in remote areas?

by @adrienbetweets 7yr 7 years ago  | 0 comments

Iโ€™m considering traveling with a 3G amplifier.

Has anyone been testing such device while traveling?

I know it sounds ridiculous to travel with such thing, but it would allow one to still be able to work while in rather unusual places, far away from coworking spacesโ€ฆ

Cheers,
Adrien

Anybody knows of good online banks for Europeans?

by @kfk 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Ok, I was just writing a PM here on banks and the question popped in my head. I am not a digital nomad, but I am very close to that way of living, in the sense that I donโ€™t want to commit to any specific physical location, long term investment (maybe only private pension), long term in general actually.

Now, I use Deutsche Bank. Nothing against them, but:

  • I hate to have an account manager that calls me telling me I should invest my money
  • The online banking is good but not great
  • Services are ok, but I donโ€™t use most of them and the one I would like (online everything please) are not there

So, I was wondering if any of you is happy with any of the digital banks out there? Criteria for a good online bank:

  • minimal paperwork
  • no account manager
  • 90% async communication (I call them, they call me only if the house is on fire)
  • they donโ€™t request a physical address and they DO NOT SEND PAPER STUFF to my mailbox

Anything like this?

Where to Register Complaints Against Businesses in Barcelona?

in Barcelona , Spain by @joutazo 8yr 8 years ago  | 1 comment

Long story short, my friends and I flew with Vueling and they lost our luggage. Theyโ€™ve done nothing so far except ignoring the problem. Theyโ€™ve failed to give us any kind of status on the luggage or offer any kind of compensation. Some of us even had our work laptops in our bags. Itโ€™s been five days with no response. Several times when weโ€™ve contacted them, theyโ€™ve hung up the phone on us. Itโ€™s been a terrible experience, and since we canโ€™t get them to do anything reasonable through their normal customer support channels, Iโ€™d like to escalate it by filing a formal complaint with some sort of government or legal entity that helps hold businesses accountable. The only problem is that I donโ€™t know who to report it to in Barcelona/Spain. I speak good enough Spanish to file a claim, but since I donโ€™t know what that sort of entity is called in Spanish, Iโ€™ve been having trouble finding where to do so.

TL;DR Where can I file consumer complaints against a company with the government or a legal entity in Barcelona or Spain?

Do you care about using a shared IP on VPN?

by @refuseillusion 8yr 8 years ago  | 11 comments

When using a VPN you will almost always share your IP with others (several members connect to the VPN server and all members on that server now share the serverโ€™s IP address).
If someone using the same IP address gets flagged, it could pass on to you as well.
A lot of companies have incorporated IP address filters. For example your PayPal account could get limited because you share an IP address with a scammer.

Has using a shared IP resulted in problems for you?

What do you do once you lost and blocked your credit card?

by @matthieudrula 8yr 8 years ago  | 13 comments

Hi,
Surprised that this thread does not exist.
If you lose and block your only credit card, what are your other options than going home?
Do you have a specific bank that can send you a new card? Aside from that do you have some tips?

When are you using your laptop on battery?

by @jeanbog 8yr 8 years ago  | 10 comments

Hello

I am going to buy a new laptop, a lightweight one. And I am considering removing the battery as a option to remove extra weight (~350g / ~0,77lbs, I guess).
Because I used to work on my laptop at library, I am not able to image situations where there is no plug.

So, when are you using your laptop on battery ?

How useful is a credit card concierge for your business, travel, and life?

by @ride 8yr 8 years ago  | 5 comments

The deal is, with a virtual assistant, you get what you pay for. On the other hand, you can be a power user of the card concierge service, and only pay an aggregated fee, including for those folks with the same card, but hardly use the service at all.

What can a credit card concierge do for you? I donโ€™t want to quote Tim Ferriss (a controversial figure); here are some other, good uses.

EUR/USD100 concierge credit cards exist out there; the concierge option is not exclusive to cards in the 500 range. Iโ€™m not a bank, I donโ€™t offer this service; I genuinely asking your opinions.

Does the 30 days extension on the Visa Exemption count against the 90 days in six months rule in Thailand?

in Thailand by @gui 9yr 9 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe(who is British) is on her second 30 days visa exemption in Thailand. Weโ€™re considering getting the visa exemption extension for 30 days and staying longer.

Our only worry is: Does this mean we would hit 90 days in total? We need to return in March to fly home from Bangkok. We are worried weโ€™d be refused entry in March as they might count the visa exemption extension against us.

Any advice is appreciated!

Cheers

What's the best way to store SIM cards?

by @kathrynoh 9yr 9 years ago  | 11 comments

Is there any kind of gadget out there that people use for storing SIM cards when you move around different countries? They seem like something that would be so easy to lose or damage. Plus also having to keep track of them. I can imagine after a bit of travel, rummaging through my bag trying to find the right card for the country Iโ€™m in!

Is it even worth holding onto them or do you just get a new one if you return to the same country?

How do you guys go about finding short term affordable housing?

by @cs340 9yr 9 years ago  | 14 comments

Iโ€™ve been living a nomadic lifestyle for four years, when I started it was pretty easy to find something on craigslist of someone whose apartment would be empty and they were just happy to recoup costs.

While airbnb has made it more convenient it has also driven prices up considerably. Itโ€™s hard to find much on craiglist anymore and everyone is looking to profit as much as possible on airbnb. If you are doing a long term rental you will probably pay twice as much on airbnb as you normally would if you were just doing the same apartment on CL. Iโ€™ve had lots of difficulty finding places lately, nowadays I scour Craigstlist and canโ€™t even find anyone to contact.
