In the recent weeks there have been a couple of meetups proposed that have fallen outside of what the intent of Nomad List meetups are supposed to be.

We absolutely love meetups - but if they are being used to promote something, not so much. Ideally, you should be able to attend these get-togethers to meet people and not feel pressured to do anything that youโ€™re not comfortable with.

Below is a list of examples that have generated concerns from the community

โ€ข Entry fees charged
โ€ข The organiser doesn't even know what the Nomad List community is
โ€ข Coworking spaces pushing for membership signups
โ€ข Online communities trying to recruit
โ€ข Full blown conferences
โ€ข Presentations from speakers

Examples of successful meetups:

โ€ข Let's grab drinks
โ€ข Chats over coffee
โ€ข Walking tour of the local eateries
โ€ข Dinner and a show
โ€ข Birthday celebrations
โ€ข Checking out a local food festival
โ€ข Computer games and pizza

1 user has been timed-out for a month for breaching the ToS.
grum3mo
Incident A user promoted an event in a city channel. A warning was issued. The message was deemed promotion as it was unrelated to the discussion at the time and was advertising the event in the form of a free entry. Note, the user had already received a warning regarding a separate issue 17 days prior, however a time out was not warranted for either incident due to the content.

The user then DMed the moderator with a wall of abuse, which resulted in a timeout that was immediately increased after they continued to abuse multiple Nomad List accounts.

The user offered little opportunity to discuss the warning as I'd normally do, choosing to intensely disrespect the moderator with abuse.

Time out has been extended to 6 months.

Ideally we avoid time-outs/account suspensions however on occasions, alternative responses are required for users who regularly skirt the terms of service or are blatantly taking advantage of the community.

โš ๏ธ A monthly reminder that if you've been auto-warned by the bot for bad avatars, promotion, advertising, cross-posting, spam etc please don't ignore it and especially DO NOT TRY to bypass the bot by modifying your post or having others post it for you.

I can't lift account suspensions for those inevitable โ€˜OMG I didn't think it was seriousโ€™ situations. If you don't know the guidelines, don't post and ask for forgiveness later.

There have been a couple of questions regarding posts related to Ukraine support and self-promotion.

Of course, we wholeheartedly support any form of assistance to help the community, we still have to err on the side of caution regarding people's ulterior motives.

Nomad List is no stranger to promotional posts that are slanted towards "charity". As this is a paid community that is mostly comprised of members with ample disposable income, we are regularly the target of scammers. Usually, it's your typical run-of-the-mill scam, however, every so often, we have some try to scam in the guise of helping people.

In the past, we've had to manage instances of:

โ€ข GoFundMe style campaigns aimed at "charity" that were funding Coworking spaces.
โ€ข Sites created with donation links etc, that started off legitimate, but changed to scams at a later date.
โ€ข Services advertised as free and charitable, which were promoted by individuals who used it as a method of self-promotion.
โ€ข Blogs posting "help" as a way to guide traffic.
โ€ข Outright scams.
In general, any link posted to the community that is off-topic to the channel will be scrutinised. Chances are, by another member of the community first (if the bot hasn't captured it), and then reported to me. If it is a link to aid in the current Ukraine conflict that is not an internationally recognised organisation, it'll likely be removed.

Additionally, the terms of service will still apply, regardless of the nature of the post. You can view them at nomadlist.com/faq

To clarify the above statement about terms of service, the second most common issue raised about Ukraine conflict links is that people are posting them without context.

The chat is to be used for discussions, not as a notice board. Posting links that are unrelated to the current discussion is likely to be reported as spam.

Quick note, a spammer joined the community, promptly mass-messaged dozens of users and channels, however the bot caught them all and deleted them. Regrettably though, it seems that Slack has a bug and on some Android devices, and occasionally deleted messages still display. If you click the user, you'll see they are deactivated, so no need to report them to me as unfortunately, I can't delete an already deleted messge as it only exists on the users device as a cached line. Of course, please do not click the link. :)

1 user has been timed-out for 6 months for breaching the ToS.

Incident The user was previously timed out for one month breaching the terms of service, which was a follow-up time-out of a week for breaching after warnings. Upon return, they posted in chat and immediately criticised the previous choice of timing-out due to poor behaviour and then promptly DMed the mod with abuse.

Incident user promoted their business, the ModBot removed it. User actively attempted to bypass the bot by rewording their post. Moderator issued warning. User raised an objection with moderator, stating they were not promoting, and had no association to the business whatsoever, despite the fact that they stated this in the initial post and their Nomad List account is linked to the business. User was given ample opportunity to retract their statement and chose to continue with their fabrication. Due to blatant attempts at fraudulently bypassing the system, an extended timeout was issued.

1 user has been timed-out for 1 week for breaching the ToS.

Incident user openly opened discussion for a highly illegal activity in a public forum. As user hasd been warned in the past for breaching ToS, a 24 hour time-out applied. User attempted to bypass the ModBot to openly mock the moderator's choice to time-out. Once the day passed, user criticised again and attempted to raise offtopic discussion about moderation. As the user did not respect the reason for the initial time-out, a second stage time-out applied, which is 7 days. As regularly stated, we will not lift timeouts for those "OMG I didn't think it was serious" situations, nor will we allow discussion that can negatively impact this community. All community members must respect each other and the laws and culture of the host locations that provide us safe passage.

Incident user made a disrespectful comment in chat, generalising a specific faith. Users raised a complaint. As the initial post could have been interpreted in a different way, the user was requested to clarify their statement in public, however they responded directly, confirming they openly disliked the religion and "don't care" about the post.

A further check of their chat logs show that they have made prior statements about the same religion. Under no circumstances will xenophobic statements be considered acceptable in this community, and a non-standard time-out was applied given there was no remorse.
