Heya! I’m from Aus. Loved ima van for 8months around cities. Everyone I met who had one swears by it. It makes pretty much all of Australia accessible for digital work (assuming you have a decent electrical system).
All reviews say the coverage is kickass. Even those that head off on 4x4 tracks.

Well hello hello! I'm working on planning my trip to Australia for this upcoming December and February. Housing is quite expensive. Anyone have tips for finding affordable housing in Sydney, Perth, or Byron? Totally open to roommates but I will be working very early morning hours...so there's that:). Thanks kwbosrbfunagaenad do you know if these sites are focused on long term or short term rentals? I'll be looking for 2-4 weeks max in each location.

They are learning more towards long term, usually > 1 month.

Based on how expensive apartments are, that might be the move.

Hey all! Very very early stages of planning something but just wanted to do a bit of research. What are the best cities for remote working in Australia and what are the average costs of living? I find the average costs on the Nomadlist site a bit confusing sometimes because it doesn’t align (at all) with what I pay now in The Netherlands, so I wanted to hear from you guys! Also, would you recommend getting a place in the city center or is outside of the center still fine? How is public transport in general?

First of all - what is your criteria for “best cities for remote working”? Both Melbourne and Sydney are amazing in their own right, or if you are more into beach, surf and a laidback lifestyle, Gold Coast or Byron Bay might fit the bill. In general the cost of living in Australia is very high (I lived in Sydney for 6 years) and there is really not much of a nomad scene because of that. Accommodation in particular is very expensive. Just take a look at AirBnb for a month (in particular during the warmer months) in Sydney or Melbourne and you’ll get the picture. There is really no other alternative for short-term rental. Apartments you can normally only get long-term lease on, 12 months a minimum (perhaps you are lucky to find one for 6 m). Public transport is pretty decent in Sydney and Melbourne but you can easily expect to commute an hour or more door to door if you stay in the suburbs as the cities are pretty big.

You can use numbeo to get an idea of the cost of living there, its pretty accurate for most cities in Australia.

In 2021, I had just moved to Adelaide, South Australia, when I met an Australian woman named Serena Michelle Findlay.

I remember having coffee with her and talking about the bushfires in Australia in 2019-2020.

She shared with me her experience volunteering on Kangaroo Island with a small group of people to help rescue and treat koalas.

The bushfires started in September 2019 and burned for six months. They burned an area equivalent to the size of Belgium, destroyed over 2,000 homes, and killed at least 33 people.

The worst bushfire season in Australia's history.

On Kangaroo Island alone, it is estimated that over 25,000 koalas were killed, along with many other species of animals, including kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and birds.

Serena documented what happened during those dark times and told the story of the bushfires in a way that resonates with people around the world.

Some of her words:

“I was able to capture the early establishment of the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Rescue Centre, an emergency animal hospital that was built to rehabilitate the many hundreds of koalas that were severely injured after the fires.”

The more established ones are Seek and Indeed but I recommend going to the bigger venture capital companies and either looking at their portfolio job boards or go directly to their portfolio companies websites and looking at their careers pages

I highly recommend against it, anywhere there's even slight tree cover it simply doesn't work properly/at all. Tried for almost 2 months and it's not reliable. I believe it's a premature product not really ready for launch. Sticking to the 4G/5G areas was the path I took even while carrying starlink with me.

It just keeps searching, and searching and searching ALL THE TIME. Even a little bit of tree cover far away in the horizon blocks the satellite connection. I was super unimpressed.
