Anyone up for a spontaneous dinner?
hidden for non-members3mo
Mitte or anywhere East
hidden for non-members3mo
hey Folks... how to get a good prepaid sim card here in berlin which works through most countries in europe?
hidden for non-members3mo
elfbfzedx Nowadays German sim cards should work in all of EU because there is now an agreement (law?) that roaming must be without charge
hidden for non-members3mo
law ๐Ÿ‘
hidden for non-members3mo
but not all plans in all countries qualify, so it requires a double check
hidden for non-members3mo
Oh I did not know that, thanks for the hint.
hidden for non-members3mo
For Germany There are different carriers that have a bunch of resellers each, so pricing and features may vary but the general availability is tied to the main carrier ofc
hidden for non-members3mo
E.g. Telekom has the best availability in the sticks but is also the most pricey
hidden for non-members3mo
Then there are Vodafone and O2. I think O2 is the worst when it comes to coverage overall. I'm using an O2 reseller and it's ok in the cities but if you go cross-country (especially in the east) it gets really weak or has no reception at all.
hidden for non-members3mo
(Oh my, sorry, my English is falling apart I guess - time for bed...)
hidden for non-members3mo
I'm using a prepaid Vodafone card from Netherlands and have been pretty successful with it around EU (including switzerland which is useful for me, as some places still charge roaming there as it's not EU, but I guess it's harder for Vodafone to implement an exception than to just give people free access)
hidden for non-members3mo
the annoying part is that they have a 10GB for 3 euro for one day bundle, but _that_ one is somehow still only valid in NL (you get 1GB for the rest of EU). Learned that the hard way ๐Ÿ˜„
hidden for non-members3mo
Buy a SIM card in another European country if you can
hidden for non-members3mo
I'm on Vodafone ES - 10 EUR gets you 15 GB
hidden for non-members3mo
Open mic comedy in kreuzberg on wed at 8pm if anybody's keen
hidden for non-members3mo
yeah, Germany is a) expensive for data compared to Spain for example b) you have to register your sim by law and it takes time and some bureaucracy to fight
hidden for non-members3mo
I'm trying out worldsim.com for my trip to germany in october
hidden for non-members3mo
Used multiple SIM cards from Spain and Ireland and NL
hidden for non-members3mo
Can even get them on eBay when already in Germany
hidden for non-members3mo
best options in EU are coopvoce it (only in italy) and simyo spain (available on ebay and can be activated outside of EU). also UK has cool offers but with Brexit future of those sims is unclear
hidden for non-members3mo
is it in english ๐Ÿ‘€
hidden for non-members3mo
yep!
hidden for non-members3mo
i'd be downโ€ฆplease send me details :)

hidden for non-members3mo
For sure! We could grab a coffee/beer together and see what to do? Maybe later this afternoon or Friday ?

ATTN US citizens Visa tip You can stay in Poland indefinitely due to a Visa policy that pre-dates Schengen which allows for consecutive 90-day stays (without 180-day requirement of Schengen). Just don't fly through Schengen zone on your way out of Europe. Ukraine boarder is close or grab a cheap flight for visa runs.

"IMPORTANT FOR THE US CITIZENS Based on an exchange of diplomatic notes between Poland and the USA, since April 15th, 1991 the US citizens are allowed to enter Poland for any 90 days period without visa. The common rule 90 days of stay in 180-day period does not apply in this case."

any of you guys avoided the city/tourist tax? some sort of a declaration that you are working should do it, right?
hidden for non-members3mo
does anyone know which ATMs in Berlin are best to withdraw from with a Revolut card?
hidden for non-members3mo
seabhkxynjhwgz I'm guessing if you have the best option would be N26 card (in Germany). Otherwise probably same rules as in any country, google how much you should get from ATM, choose any random safe ATM, make sure it doesn't try to be helpful by doing currency conversion, and confirm that received amount would be similar to the googled one.
hidden for non-members3mo
some ATMs in Germany still take a fee with a Revolut card, but I went to a Sparkasse near Kotbusser Tor and it was all good. Apparently most bank atms in berlin work fine with Revolut but it's still best to be vigilent
hidden for non-members3mo
yeah, most of the "EC" atms. take 5โ‚ฌ fee or something even with my EU debit card. Sparkasse has been good.
hidden for non-members3mo
no fees so far with them, i think i've tried 3 different Sparkasse ATMs
hidden for non-members3mo
if you wan to withdraw without any fees, you should go to Sparkasse
hidden for non-members3mo
other ATM are paid
hidden for non-members3mo
just be aware of the opening hours many Sparkasse close at night, while some of them are on the street.
hidden for non-members3mo
Yes 1 month is enough :)
hidden for non-members3mo
If you want to see all the museums I'd argue ๐Ÿ˜„
hidden for non-members3mo
Just finishing a month here and would say it's a minimum. Feels like 3 woulnd't be too long at all but that's true to many places. Berlin is just so spread out and has so many great neighbourhoods. Would prefer summer months tho, it's getting chilly now...
hidden for non-members2mo
ardmvfbjr you pay taxes 1st in germany on your global income and if you didn't pay enough (like the rate was 15% but you'd pay 20% in the US), you would have to pay the remainder to the US but you don't have to pay taxes twice - a company called care offers health insurance to non-europeans that runs about 70 bucks a month and will cover you for up to 5 years
hidden for non-members2mo
International health insurance like Cigna is not recognized by the German government

fgdpapyfm Germany isn't as relaxed as most of the SEA countries when it comes to working on a tourist/student visa. If you're working in germany, you need to pay taxes, and maybe you can get away with it for a while but if they find out you've been evading taxes at all I'm sure there will be serious repercussions.

Looking for a new apartment in Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte.

1-2 bedroom, to live alone. If anyone hears of anything please let me know!
hidden for non-members2mo
irdbfserigaoqxt ok, at least that's encouraging. Taxes will take some figuring out re how much to keep in the corporation vs pay myself as salary, but it shouldn't be as bad as I'd thought
hidden for non-members2mo
uoioxekcrpiumrh ok, at least that's encouraging. Optimizing taxes will take some figuring out re how much to keep in the corporation vs pay myself as salary, but it shouldn't be as bad as I'd thought

care-concept.de/index_eng.html <--- this is the cheapest health insurance i know of here in germany
hidden for non-members2mo
Wow, I'm wondering how much 10 bucks a year gets you

Hey :) I'm searching for an anmeldung. Ready to pay ๐Ÿ˜‰ I need it to sign my new job. But I'll only have my apartment in a month.

I don't know how these insurance companies are profitable

hidden for non-members2mo

hidden for non-members2mo
clubs are all super smokey, it's pretty annoying if you're bothered by smoke
hidden for non-members2mo
but the techno and vibe of the clubs are great
hidden for non-members2mo
also went to ritter butzke which was pretty trash
hidden for non-members2mo
about blank was good but the techno was a little too experimental for me

If you like WW2 /cold war history, you could check out the topography of terror / berlin underground tours / reichstag and the stasi museum. If youโ€™re not really into that, Potsdam is quite beautiful and just 1 hour on the train (maybe a bit less interesting in winter).
