Anyone have any thoughts on reviving the #toronto chat?

Montreal's great. โค๏ธ Great people there in my experience! I went to school in French so the language stuff is more of an annoying hassle (mainly healthcare, paperwork, etc, being primarily in French) because you're really asking people to constantly switch over to English. I find people there address me in French first and I generally like being able to speak what ever language is spoken locally, but everyone has different tolerance levels and can be OK just getting by in English mainly. qexsgsok I'm surprised to hear you have that worry re kids. I feel like Montreal's bilingual enough that kids learning French just means they're fluent in both languages as adults, unless their parents or friends don't speak English.

Would love to come but it would take me an hour to travel back and forth, in the middle of a work day. Not sure what the internet service / access is like at Hart House for a non-student coding, otherwise I'd consider working from there that day. face_holding_back_tears

Anyone have any recommendations for Vancouver Island and/or British Columbia? Iโ€™m heading from Seattle to Victoria on Sunday and will look to rent a car. Looking for recommendations for accommodation, adventures and fun!

Also if anyone would like to grab a beer/coffee or knows of any interesting events planned in Vancouver, Vancouver Island, or anywhere in BC over the next week, Iโ€™d love to hear. Iโ€™m pretty flexible! I havenโ€™t even booked accommodation yet

Itโ€™s a nice in-between time in Whistler if you want to see mountains. No snow yet, so not $$$$. Itโ€™s my favorite time of year to go. Thereโ€™s a great bungee jumping spot in Whistler that you have to check out if you go.

The parks of BC in general are really cool, even if youโ€™re not into hiking. Butchart Gardens outside Victoria is cool too.
The sea life is another big draw to Vancouver Island. Whale tours or even kayaking with orcas

auoahwul you've sold me on Ottawa. I'm looking to move next year to somewhere more affordable than Toronto. All your points are relevant. Incidentally, I asked a bunch of Black Torontonians about where to move and people were very much against Montreal despite its charms because of 'xenophobia'. Ottawa got the most votes.
Hiya! Any Vancouverites here looking to travel in May or June? Iโ€™m from Vancouver but havenโ€™t been back in five years so want to stay for a month. Would love to stay at a nomad-friendly space :-) in case anyone is interested in a swap (plus difference in cost if there is a big one) I have a two bed two bath gorgeous apartment I own in the nomad town of Bansko Bulgaria. Preparation/research (I guess youโ€™re already here butโ€ฆ)
The first two things I did on arrival was to get a phone number and a bank account, so I researched in what companies/bank I wanted to do those process. I have a toddler, so before arriving I applied to daycares, after two weeks he was accepted in option #1 so he started attending the daycare one day after we arrived to Canada.

That gave us enough time to find a place to live, it took a week for us to find a place to live.

So I was in Canada the last two weeks, it is so crazy expensive and also cold (I don't know why I went in November). I filled my in laws car and it cost $95. I went to a family event and a point of conversation was the cost of lettuce. Canada is my home but for the life of me, if you can avoid it I don't know why you would go right now.
If you can nomad, now is a great time to do it, cad is pretty strong right now.

Agreed, I was there in the summer and it was amazing how much things had increased in 2 years. I fear Canada is heading towards some hard times as the real estate price issues gets closer to a wall/cliff.
I miss the concept of Canada, and the people... I don't miss the prices. When I consider Canggu cheap (the most expensive place in Bali), Ontario was a real shock. Imagine it compared it to Chang Mai? The whole covid-driven real estate price surge (some places in the countryside it was 3-4x the pre-covid price as city-folk had bidding wars just got out of TO).. Ughhh. The interest rate hikes on mortgages are unbelievable. When the drop comes (as it always does), I'll be glad to be overseas living as cheaply as I can manage... I couldn't afford to live in Canada for long anymore :(
Adding to this thread, I just arrived to Montreal after travelling around the globe since July. I have the feeling things in Canada will become even less affordable in 2023. I am personally starting to think about selling my house here in Montreal and gtfo for good. Summer is pretty awesome still though. However, there is no reason to be here if I can work from anywhere.
This is also in addition to the mounting healthcare crisis; the average wait time is 18 hours, before I came to Colombia 8 months ago I spent 24 hours in an ER, around 20 waiting.
and there is nothing you can do except go to the states pretty much if you want anything quicker.
Yes, the healthcare is a joke at this point and it will probably get worst. I wonder why it is country going in this direction. We had it so good in 2014 and now 2022 looks like another nation really.
Will be back for a bit next week, not looking forward to itjoy
Totally agree, but why it's started to be expensive :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:, comparing to my monthly nรณmade life expensive Canada was the highest so far

I've been here for 18 years and it looks very different than when I first moved. Canada is a great country and I love the people here. Compared to Brazil, safety was one of the reasons my parents stayed, but yes, the costs are soaring and if you can move to another place it could be worth it. I started travelling for that reason + remote work, and my parents will also likely move next year to afford a better retirement. Why spend so much time in the cold?

I think the whole covid crisis gutted the healthcare field of qualified DR's, LPN's, RN's and other professionals, and now we're barely getting by. Its sad. That system saved my life 14 years ago, and I'll be eternally grateful, but... I mean, really, nobody expected an extended pandemic, not even healthcare professionals, and I can't blame them for saying "[email protected] this, it isn't what I signed up for" and just changing fields or leaving or retiring. Now, for example, Ontario has aggressively attacked this problem by, for example, authorizing Queens Medical school to admit an extra TWENTY potential medical doctor students a year. 20. I have no words. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-queen-s-university-new-program-family-doctors-1.6448499
iwvdgjrdcbvxwe My mother is a nurse (retired) and I have a friend who she pretty much keeps the ER alive in my hometown at one of the hospitals. The amount of work they were doing without pay increases is crazy.
