Happy Monday everyone!

I am organizing a Discovery Dinner later in November in #montreal! :wine_glass:
The idea is simple. Get remote workers who donโ€™t know each other together around a dinner โ™ก
We are looking for nomads who all have a creative spark in them :performing_arts:
Whether you enjoy going to the museum, taking pictures as a hobby or if you are a full time artist, we look forward to meeting you!

The goal is to get people with a similar lifestyle and shared interest around a table and see what can happen :sparkles:

Based on the group availabilities this will be hosted on Nov 9 or 16 :)

If this speaks to you, please throw a reaction! ๐Ÿ‘ โค๏ธ ๐Ÿท

Hey folks! I've been in Vancouver for a while now, and I don't see many job opportunities in IT. Is it just me, or does someone else see the same thing?
brunorv 1mo
I am IT project manager btw
It seems like there's a lot less jobs in comparison to people looking for work in a lot of areas in IT right now
I've been seeing other other talk about how they don't get callbacks/interviews in the last while, when they used to be flooded with requests to interview
A lot of economy paranoia going on right now so many companies have hiring freezes. Canada in general also tends to have a lot less tech jobs available than US. Iโ€™ve lived in Vancouver 15+ years and only worked for a Canadian company for two of those years. man-shruggingskin-tone-2

Any Canadians living abroad but still have RRSPs - is it possible to change banks with your RRSPs without being back in Canada? I'd really love to tell RBC to take a hike, but it seems like it'll cost me a flight at least.
make sure to research this correctly. I was billed a 300$ fine because I contributed to my RRSP while outside of Canada.
compscidr 1mo
Have been doing 401k while I've been in the states, but good to know. So far, RRSPs have just been sitting there, but it seems impossible to switch banks, or even change the investments the RRSPs are being used for while not in Canada.

ajxemzffxqbryc was this when you didn't have residency here anymore or just outside the country for a period of time?
compscidr 1mo

oh whoops saw you were talking to yanic ๐Ÿ˜†
last year, i was still paying taxes in Canada and was out for less than 6 months
compscidr 1mo
damn thats rough
juliana_s 1mo
So they saw that the money was coming out of the country and fined you? This is so strange. I have automatic contribution, but I wonder when the "monitoring" process kicks in
I was able to move a work-provided one between SunLife and Wealthsimple all online. Regular physical banks though, I donโ€™t know.
compscidr 1mo
ah yeah i reached out to wealth simple a while ago, they require a Canadian phone number during account creation and I got stuck there. I reached out to support and told me I had to be physically in Canada.
You can get a Canadian number with Twilio or something. I donโ€™t know how theyโ€™d know your physical presence. I wasnโ€™t in Canada at the time, though I _was_ still a tax resident at that point.
compscidr 1mo
hm yeah might be worth giving it a go

Hi ! Is there any canadians who are applying for a visa abroad here and need the authentification of the GRC criminal record check by Global Affairs? I have few questions about it? I am getting worried, because they have my document for about 40 open days and I am still waiting. Nobody reply to my email. Is there someone is the same situation or that I experienced that? Thank you !
juliana_s 1mo
Hi Bianca, I'm going to start the process for a visa. Which one are you applying for?

Hi are there any canadians that work in cayman islands here?
Hi U053N4KUJCFbr /> Thanks for your response

That's exactly the one I got last week.
Easiest to order from the phone at home.

I'll give it a try but nothing seems as interesting as Revolut from all the options I saw.
llmelrtgdmtje if you have an European number + address then go for Revolut! Last time I tried I couldnโ€™t open it in Canada ๐Ÿ˜ž but let me know if it changed! Agree- Revolut is awesome.
gnjxfubtkexsv the thing is that I already have everything settled in EU as a Freelancer. But I'm moving here in Canada and looks for all the mandatory stuff (like being able to send/receive using _Interac_). I got a Tangerine account but overall, I find canadians offers a bit confusing for the moment.
llemnlywrxrxc ahhh I see. Yeah, Tangerine would be the best for that. You can also try KOHO or Wise (similar to Revolut but works in Canada). The banking system in Canada is pretty outdated compared to other countries, but I hope this helps!

check it out here, but if you're working remotely they don't seem to care, says on the Canadian website you don't need a work visa if you're working remotely for a foreign company, IE. digital nomads www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/campaigns/high-skilled-workers.html

Is this a new thing? Do border guards know about it? Americans have been turned back on the border for remote working as recently as a year ago. My concern is that theory doesn't translate into practice with this one.
Digital nomad one and you?
I finally received the document after 45 open daysโ€ฆ

juliana_s 22d
I'm glad you got it! Sounds like it takes longer than expected
๐Ÿ›ฌ vfblarypbfze just arrived in ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Toronto, #canada
I'm Canadian, so I haven't had the need to test it. If it were me though, I would most likely treat it like entering any other country, you're there for tourism, if they ask specifically maybe mention you have some work you'll do online, but don't bring it up at all
I believe it's somewhat newer. I don't know the circumstances of Americans being turned away (seems like there might be more to it), but at the very least, if it comes up, they question you further, you can bring up the website, say you're a digital nomad and the Canadian government website said there was no need for a work visa if you're working remotely for a company in another country

Have you done any nomading in the US for longer periods of time (months)? If so, what was your experience at the border? (They are also strict about this.)
ooooo yeah, itโ€™s really long and a lot of documents and obligacion. Not that easy to getโ€ฆ

Ok, good to know. For which country did you get the visa?
So 45 days just for the criminal record check by Global Affairs and now the rest of the process, do you have an idea of how long it'll take?
Hey all, looking to sublet my 1bd apartment in Toronto Dec 24 - Feb 22 in case anyone is interested.

How much cash would it be recommended to have for a two weeks visit to Canada? Card payments would be preferable, but are there things that are cash only? Like public transport or something else?
I think I only used cash one or twice during 3 month in canada, with one time being the case of my card being rejected for no particular reason. So, you should be ok with like CAD20 just in case )
Iโ€™ve been here for over two weeks and still donโ€™t have any CAD cash. Have used card for everything (transit, beer, groceries). Keep thinking I should get some, butโ€ฆ

The only time youโ€™ll face cash only is at like some ethnic restaurants. Lots of Chinese and Vietnamese joints do cash only in Vancouver and Richmond

Sometimes card means "Inertac", which is Canada-only payment system (similar to EC-Karte in Germany, or Multibanco in Portugal). One place I remember they wanted only Interac card was some gym, and a few smaller grocery stores.
amade1 15d
and long-distance trains, if I remember correctly, you could only get snacks and drinks on the train between Toronto and Montreal with an actual credit card (no European debit cards).
