Hi, everybody!
Is there a visa for freelancers in the UK/London like Germany/Berlin?
I've never heard of one.
sqvgkzm & />Youโ€™ve got to be starting a novel business but itโ€™s possible to go this route.

If youโ€™re seeking employment, thereโ€™s the traditional Tech Nation visa:
Thank you okpsosbg โœจ
I generally go with 3 mobile
unlimited for 26 is a pretty good deal. just keep in mind that using it outside the UK you'll have a data cap.
I go with giffgaff
80GB data a month for ยฃ20
with 20 GB available for roaming, that's a better deal if you'll spend more time in europe.
Do these plans incur a cost if you make calls or text outside of the UK?
Dunno. I never use my sim to make calls or texts. That's what WhatsApp is for.
Giffgaff at least has a site where you ether country and shows the rates
And I like how itโ€™s not a contract so you can cancel anytime
three mobile doesn't if in the EU (most countries for now)
Neat, thanks. I'm moving to the UK and trying to find a plan that most resembles my T-Mobile "Magenta Plus" plan here in the US. One thing I particularly like is the global partnership that allows free roaming and data (2G/3G) in different countries around the world. It'd be great to find something comparable

Curious to know what it's like in London right now amidst this Covid-19 pandemic
My move is delayed to London and I am curious to know what the on-the-ground feel is right now
Wow looks so eery
Okay, glad to know they're attempting to at least socially distance
he says it's like a post apocalyptic scene
From what I've read online, it seemed like this wasn't yet "officially" in practice
yeah, there are still tons of people ignoring it. this is one small square in a large city.
and they're still at the office vs working at home even though they're a media company and there is 0 need to be in the office.
Any feel on government slowdown because of Covid-19? Selfishly, I have paperwork being processed by the British government and an crossing my fingers they are still able to process them ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
i'm not in the UK, so i can't comment about here, but i just talked to a car dealer in germany about buying a car and he said the local govt is shut down for at least 4 weeks so nothing like that is being processed. so i would expect delays...
Yeah, that's my current expectation of everything right now; with this changing so rapidly on a daily basis who knows what's to come
I mean not a shutdown but severe delays
Iโ€™m here now. No official order for people to stay at home. No official order for businesses to close. Buses and tube running pretty much as usual. Many businesses closed or takeaway only. Food on shelves. Amazon prime and prime now working just fine. Food delivery companies are non-stop. If sustainable I would hope that no lockdown is needed.
Supermarket doesn't have toilet paper, pasta, and low on other products.
Some people in the streets, maybe 10%of what is usual, surprisingly a lot of those are old people.
Im actually a bit worried if there is a lockdown since i was planning start being a nomad in May.
My house contract is going to end in a month and i still need to send a lot of boxes back to my home country. :/ and i already have airbnbs booked in estonia and Poland
deijpyst at least you donโ€™t have it the other way around - I have already paid for 2 months rent in expensive London that I can now say goodbye to ๐Ÿ˜ญ
Didn't Airbnb change their cancellation fees so you can get refunds? Just wait until the places you're going are on the list and ask for the refund.

rjpsmhvnnxuvoxr wanderingdev is right, if they close the borders airbnb allow for free cancelation. Or you're not coming either way?
Itโ€™s not through airbnb unfortunately, but a regular sublet
So sorry to hear cmhrncuupoahdje ! Is there any way to get that back due to these extreme circumstances?
Thanks for the report. It seems then that London and DC (where I am now) feel similar. Most companies here are mandating people work from home though, so that could be contributing to the low traffic outside
xskmgskfmm Iโ€™ve tried asking for some money back, but Iโ€™m afraid itโ€™s a no! Itโ€™s a real shame, but Iโ€™m also reminding myself Iโ€™m lucky me and my family still have our health and a stable income, some are being hit way harder during these times
That's a good attitude to have about it ๐Ÿ™‚
Luckily there are another 295 hospitals in London to help out ๐Ÿ˜…
you think they have 30k beds?
Northwick Park sounds like a hotspot if they need that many beds
I think it's for the city, not that one area.
interesting stats:

According to an intensive care doctor and professor here (in Belgium), there is a clear correlation between the number of intensive care beds pr 100,000 inhabitants and the Covid-19 case fatality rate (number of infected people who die).

For instance,

- 35 intensive care beds per 100,000 inhabitants
- 16,627 people infected with the coronavirus
- 44 deaths
- = case fatality rate of 0.26

- 10.4 intensive care beds per 100,000 inhabitants
- 10,995 people infected with the coronavirus
- 372 deaths
- = case fatality rate of 3.38

- 8.6 intensive care beds per 100,000 inhabitants
- 41,035 people infected with the coronavirus
- 3,405 deaths
- = case fatality rate of 8.29
Just a heads up, the case fatality rate (CFR) is not the percentage of infected people who die
it's the percentage of cases (infected person who was tested and diagnosed) that die
no country is doing randomised population testing, so cases < infections, and many countries have quite strict criteria for testing, for example that you must both have symptoms and have a known link to someone with an existing positive test result
CFR will be much higher than real fatality rate (the percentage of infected people that die), and the ratio between the two will be different in each country

Did anyone just go out and do a little clapping? ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ‘
I didn't even know about it ๐Ÿ˜…
That's a long line, but, at a social distance, a safe one ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿง
Hi, Iโ€™m Max. Looking for a partner in London how involved in the Startup Ecosystem
Anyone in the UK right now during everything happening? How is it? Partner and i are about to have to fly back from Singapore as our visas our ending and we have UK passports, not sure if it's the right decision so wanting to climate check.
I'm here UK3P9HNUE. Happy to answer any questions you have. I live in London if it helps.

Basically, we are on full lockdown so you won't be able to do anything except go to the shop or go out for a run/walk once a day.
Let me know if there's anything specific you were interested in.
otherwise, good luck with the move ๐Ÿ™‚
Yeah Iโ€™m here in central London. It is and has been fine. Grocery deliveries keeping me stocked, no real reason to go out. Where I live and who I know itโ€™s hard to collate what I read in the news with daily life.
Thanks guys! I'm british citizen by birth but haven't actually lived there at all since leaving as a child, so it's less than optimal that it may be my only option to come back. don't have a place to go so would need to find somewhere to rent. Considering heading to Glasgow as my sister lives there, but again would still have to rent somewhere + self quarantine for a while. Good to know grocery delivery is an option and still working!
from what I can tell, trains are still running too, so it would be possible to go to glasgow
tqlcjinslrsfpzjqpw public transport is still moving for those that need it, so you'll be able to get to where you need to live. People have, on the whole, been impressively self disciplined when it comes to lockdown (at least from my experience in london) with a lot of transport down to about 10-20% capacity.

You should be ok if in quarantine with grocery delivery, but there are plenty of online communities (nextdoor etc) where i am sure you'll find someone willing to help with shopping if no slots are available, too.
What visa are you on currently? I'm in Singapore I'm on a standard visitor visa, asked for my 2nd extension already (not their typical practice) and they issued it for me without even requesting a payment!
thanks Joe - this was helpful, and reassuring ๐Ÿ™‚ I managed to get my visa extended in singapore so will stay put 1 more month and see how the world looks then
Also standard visitor! Just renewed this weekend and was also surprised to have it approved (2nd extension) without payment. Bizarre, and also I'm super grateful.
Happy to hear that! I couldn't find a written word about that policy anywhere online, but yeah it seems like they really want us to stay at home ๐Ÿ˜„ Enjoy your free month! I'll probably ask for another one afterward...
Hahahah for sure, good luck! Weโ€™ll see whatโ€™s happening in June ๐Ÿ˜Š
no sweat! Glad it worked out!
Im also in London, airbnb prices are really low now. Even cheaper than long term rents.
Supermarkets are ok, they still have pretty much everything. Maybe not so many options
Airbnb cheaper then rent, I should took a look.... I just moved today (from north London to different north London). hmm next time I will save money ๐Ÿ˜…
