snprzzo what do you think itโ€™s the best area to stay in Mauritius? I heard about Flic-en-Flac.
Ideally I am looking for a place with a nice beach and a few restaurants.
sdqvdnqrk with limited experience that I had I would stick to the North. Much more things are happening, restaurants, shops, local life.

Flic en Flac seems more of tourist resorts โ€˜reservationโ€™. Iโ€™d be bored.

I stayed next to Mont Choisy beach and if I had to choose Iโ€™d stick to that area. Grand Baie, Pereybere, Trou-aux-Biche, Grand Gaube

Might be different though if you donโ€™t care about going out, meeting people, etc.
thanks USPB0JY0L! I just had a look, you are right! The area in the North feels like more the area where Iโ€™d like to stay
Hello!
Thinking of popping to Mauritius for 2-3 months early November.
Any insight or thoughts welcome - mostly concerned about co-working spaces & internet speedโ€ฆ
I'm considering Mauritius from October onward too, stay in touch! From the little research I've done, the North-West is the place to be and internet is not too bad.
Hi All, any recommendations on the best websites to use for long term stay?
I have been in Mauritius for a week already, both Grand Baie and Flic En Flac, but I am quite disappointed. It is definitely not the beach paradise I was expecting. In Grand Baie, the beach is very fragmented and mostly private. In Flic en Flac, the beach is quite long, but itโ€™s full of broken corals, and itโ€™s not very pleasant to walk bare foot, even inside the sea.
Mauritius seems very oriented to all-inclusive resort holidays. The accomodation prices are generally very high. The accomodations outside the all-inclusive resort networks, are rather low quality. Surely a lot worse than Thailand or Bali accomodation standards for the same prices.
It feels like a lot of property speculations has been going on, and the island failed to keep a unique character. Itโ€™s all rather commercial, with little soul.
That's really valuable insight, thanks for sharing. I was thinking of committing to Mauritius for a good couple of months next year but was always concerned it would be a boring holiday resort. Please share more if you stay.
I am actually considering going to Thailand, as itโ€™s reopening.
Yeah asia is the plan for me too but thought Mauritius would be worth the visit for a couple months, plus the timezone was better
Yeah similar, was planning to check it out as the timezone would be a lot more convenient
What I find quite fascinating about Mauritius, is that the Indians, who arrived just 200 years ago, brought by the British, speak French Creole as their first language, which is a French dialect.
The French Creole was created by the African slaves (brought from East Africa, as Mauritius was an uninhabited island) at the time of French domination (1715-1810).
The Indians are now the ethnic majority (over 50%), and speak French Creole even among themselves. They learnt it from the African slaves who stayed in Mauritius after the French left.
The British was the last foreign domination of Mauritius, which lasted over 150 years (1810-1968). However the French domination, which was before that and lasted less than 100 years (1715-1810), had a much more profound influence on the culture of the island.
Practically French Creole is the most spoken language among all Mauritians of any origin (African, Indian, Chinese). However the medias (TVs, papers) mostly use official French and not Creole.
Everyone in Mauritius also speaks English, as they learn it in school together with French. But English is just a secondary language.
โ€ข 1507 Mauritius was first discovered by Portuguese (it was an uninhabited island, no natives lived there)
โ€ข 1590 started Dutch domination of Mauritius
โ€ข 1715 started French domination
โ€ข 1810 started British domination
โ€ข 1968 Mauritius independence
