Hi! Looking to be in NZ for a year, and would love any recommendations for searching for accommodation please!
rene 2mo
I used AirBnb for the most part. Depends what kind of stay you want
rene 2mo
Campervan and freedom camping is great there
rene 2mo
If youโ€™re doing e.g. fruitpicking, a lot of time these places offer you free accommodation, but itโ€™s often hostel-like. Same for ski instructors
rene 2mo
If youโ€™re looking for the entire year in a bigger city, so really just Auckland, ChCh and Welly, you could try to find roommates in FB groups
rene 2mo
But if you can, try to travel around a lot, cities is not what you go to NZ for ๐Ÿ˜‰ โ›ฐ
x97al1 2mo
This is great! Thank you! ๐Ÿคฉ Yeah - no cities for me. Thinking of spending most of my time in the South Island - between surf and ski spots. Iโ€™ll be working remotely so would like to have some sort of base (maybe an airbnb or roommate situation) to ensure working conditions are stable, but maybe I can achieve that with campervans too? Do you know if there any areas that are notoriously bad for data/wifi (Iโ€™m aware they are likely the spots Iโ€™ll want to be in :sob:)?
rene 2mo
Queenstown is super busy (and fancy at times, so anything but cheap) but also super nice and pretty. Wanaka is a nice alternative but is gaining popularity as well. I guess with Ohakune & National Park Village (North Island) those are the most well known ski towns. The 4G/5G connections are reliable there, or you can get Starlink once thatโ€™s available again - NZ generally is covered. Or you just work from cafes and coworking spaces, they do have them down south as well, but not as many as Welly or Auckland of course.
The west coast of the south island is less 4G, let alone 5G connected, and from what Iโ€™ve seen, that seem to be the surf spot. I donโ€™t surf, so canโ€™t say much about that. Some friends always went surfing in Wellington though and I saw kite surfers from my place in Seatoun. Same for ChCh, but Iโ€™d recommend looking into Lyttelton instead, which is just behind the tunnel - much prettier โค๏ธ I spent a month there to paraglide and loved it - thereโ€™s also definitely some surfing. Even the little towns usually have somewhat of a reliable internet connection but in between there are definitely spots with 0 connectivity. Same goes for the mountains.
x97al1 2mo
Thank you UJGDB5UF4! This is pure gold! ๐ŸŒŸ Iโ€™ll be sure to check these spots out - never heard of Seatoun or Lyttelton, so itโ€™s really cool to hear about these places too ๐Ÿ‘€ Sounds like Starlink and a camper might give me the most flexibility! Wouldnโ€™t want to move around too much though, or I think Iโ€™d miss out on making connections! If you might think or remember any other exciting things, places or adventures that youโ€™d recommend please let me know! Very keen to hear all about it! Thanks so much again!! ๐ŸŽ‰

hey hejyttsr / cnbbufiyv I got asked questions about NZ a lot and wrote down what I did in my 2.5y there in a document. not all of this might be relevant for you but maybe something sticks out:

```There are 9, now 10, Great Walks of New Zealand by the Department of Conservation (DoC). They are really well maintained. Not cheap but definitely worth it if you can and they are not already booked out.
South Island
------------
Nelson Area
- Abel Tasman National Park Instead of 3 day hike, park your car at the end and take a boat about 1 day walk in and hike back. Or go the other way around and organize boat pickup.
- Motueka Skydive Abel Tasman
- Pretty drive up to Golden Bay Caves with Kiwi & Moa fossils, LOTR filming site
Highway 1 down to ChCh:
- Kaikoura legendary fresh lobster / seafood
Mountain Passes really beautiful drives / rides with motorbike
- Lewis Pass
- Arthurs Pass
Christchurch:
- meh, cities are not what you come to NZ for
- take one of NZs 3 train rides to Greymouth and back, very scenic but there's nothing at the other end, so you gotta go back
- Lyttelton, kind of a cute little harbor town that has paragliding (Taylors Mistake beach)
- Akaroa peninsula
Between ChCh and Dunedin
- Moeraki Boulders weirdly shaped rocks...
- Oamaru Steampunk HQ Museum
Dunedin:
- University town, not much happening on holidays
- Tunnel beach
South of South island
- Catlins Forest Park Beautiful Hiking
- Curio Bay Dolphins
- Bluff southernmost town and nearby southernmost point
- Milford Sound Cruise (dolphins with any luck), kayaking, underwater observatory, Scuba Diving in the fjord.
- Te Anau Milford Track & Kepler Track start
Queenstown / Wanaka:
- Paragliding / Hanggliding
- Skydiving
- Gondola + Louge
- Fine dining
- Speedboat
- Hiking, e.g. Roys Peak
- #thatwanakatree /> - Skiing (Double/Triple Cone, Cordrona, Coronet Peak)
- Arrowtown
- Bungee jumping / 100m drop swing
- Onsen Hotpools
- Indoor Skydiving (wind tunnel)
- VR Games
Rest of middle / West Coast
- Hemner Springs Hotsprings / water park
- Lake Tekapo Stargazing (black sky reserve)
- Aoraki / Mount Cook Highest mountain in NZ, only hotel inside a national park, glaciers, amazing heli flights
- Franz Josef (has skydiving) & Fox Glacier
- Just the drive up Highway 6 from ~ Greymouth to Westport is incredibly beautiful
- Punakaiki / Pancake rocks
North Island
------------
Wellington
- Greatest little capital, lots of culture and food
- Te Papa (National Museum)
- Zealandia (bird sanctuary)
- ...
Hawks Bay (Napier / Hastings)
- Wine tasting
- Bird colonies
- Te Mata Peak
West Coast
- Taranaki, weirdly round mountain
- Forgotten highway (State Highway 43)
Taupo
- Skydiving (most popular one in NZ)
- Maori rock art
- Huka Falls, Craters of the moon
- Fishing trips
- Parasailing
Rotorua
- Smells like farts
- Hot pools
- Redwood forest (only one outside of California afaik)
Coromandel
- Beautiful drives & beaches
Northland
- Pretty empty except for farms but beautiful
- Skydiving in Kerikeri (Bay of Islands)
- Scuba Diving poor knights
- Cape Reinga (northernmost point)
- 90 mile beach
- Maori culture / history Waitangi Treaty Grounds etc
Auckland / Hamilton
- skip Auckland ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
- Hamilton botanic gardens
- Nearby Hobbinton```
Sorry for the late reply! This is great! Thank you jlbmtz :pray:
<@U0600NYJ5MG> - Iโ€™m looking at being there from middle of next year so havenโ€™t really looked too much into detail. Currently just been looking into high level stuff - living/rental costs and possible areas I might want to live in, but havenโ€™t decided on anything at all. Sorry to disappoint!
Hello! Would anyone have tips on selling a campervan in New Zealand (Christchurch)? What are the best websites or places? How to best reach backpackers? Does it make sense to sell to a garage? Do you know how much time we should estimate to sell the van?
My friend and I will buy a campervan to travel New Zealand and want to sell it afterwards before heading to Melbourne. Appreciate your insights! ๐Ÿ˜Š
if you're looking for both surf & ski spot, i think Christchurch is the perfect place.
rene 17d
hmfiieablo itโ€™s somewhat expensive, but it also very much depends on you and the amount of time you spend and when youโ€™re there. are you coming for 6 months in the summer and buy a van that you sell at the end? quite cheap, food is somewhat similar to europe. do you come in the winter and wanna ski in queenstown and live in a hotel? better bring buckets of cash
rene 17d
however, the kiwi dollar is a bit shit last time i checked, so if you earn SGD/EUR/USD, even AUD, it should make it a little easier
Hi !!
Im planning a trip to NZ from feb to april and im wondering if i should go to auckland or to wellington !
Im looking forward to do a lot of hikes , where should i go?
I've heard that auckland is a lot more rainy.
Thanks in advance !
rene 17d
wellington has worse weather on avg but is a nicer city imho. they say โ€œcanโ€™t beat welly on a good dayโ€ โ€ฆbut there arenโ€™t that many good days, it really is the windiest city in the world ๐Ÿ˜‰ I spent ~2y there on and off, but no time more than necessary in auckland. AKL is usually a bit warmer, and you have easy access to northland, even warmer. thereโ€™s some cool hiking in northland. that said, february is still summer so the weather is (on avg) nice anyway and march (northern hemisphere september) was also still nice in welly when i was there. in april itโ€™s starting to get a bit shit on certain days, definitely colder. that said, i bought a motorbike in april and drove it well into may one year. Auckland probably has nice hikes available as well from what i see from friends. welly definitely does! e.g. around the coast (east harbour/days bay/wainuimata/pencarrow) or even on the side of the city (makara, mount kaukau), up the hutt valley (kaitoke or even multi day in the remutakas), on near paekakariki like the escarpment track. in welly youโ€™re also somewhat closer to the south island (by car+ferry, if you fly :shrug:) and especially the northern part has some wicked hikes like the abel tasman. in parts you can probably hike on the te araroa. depends a bit on what kind of hiking you wanna do
That is really nice data !!!
Apreciate it !
Sounds like welly has better hikes !
Will check the historic data of the forecast for those dates and make a decision!
Thanks a lot this was really helpfull!
I owe you one !
