Fingers crossed!! ๐Ÿ˜„
They have fiber here but you have to be _just_ the right spot to get it. The DSL is very flaky (currently getting 2Mbps and I'm paying for 25Mbps). PLDT customer service is really bad, I'm dreading starting a dialogue with them but will have to in a few hours. Setting up a new connection can take about 2 weeks if you're lucky. I also have a smart LTE router which is hit or miss depending on where we're located. At one time I tried to get Sky cable as a third backup but Sky just never showed up to our house. I had a neighbor that had some pull and got Fiber ran to his house and he seemed to be happy with it, perhaps that's the secret to good internet in Davao.
I have a very interesting reddit post about why the internet here is so flaky but I can't share links yet ๐Ÿ˜•
Googling "How PLDT Deliberately Keeps Local Internet Traffic Slow and More Expensive In Philippines" seems to turn it up though ๐Ÿ˜‰
but that's only talking about slow speeds within the country, not slow speeds with connections to outside of the country
xfywlxp Have you tried the internet in the coworking spaces? Looks like there are a few.
khibocccsxusc I have not, there are a lot more than I recall when I looked a couple of years ago!
Hey brzqzhmldvscm or someone else that already have been to cebu city or IT Park more specifically. Iโ€™m thinking about staying in IT Park for a week in January. Iโ€™ll have something like 2 days off for day trips. As I could see in the internet it seems that there are some options to spend the day in some islands nearby. Just out of curiosity, have you done some day trip or something similar from IT Park/Cebu city region?
As far as I understand using grab itโ€™s easy and not expensive, so it seems that is doable since there are some islands options nearby
just worried if it would be too much โ€œhassleโ€ for short a period like day trip
I went to Siquijor last time. Beautiful but too far for a day trip. I don't think there is any other island you could go just for a day trip, needs more time.
Ok thank you rrbwyvhymgumy I'll check it out and see if I can set up a 2/3day trip.
Lots of options with flights from Cebu then if you can do three days ๐Ÿ‘Œ
Tim K on youtube has been my guilty pleasure for the past month
basically he's been vlogging his life in philippines www.youtube.com/channel/UCGyTJBom8TTHa9pc_VlZXfA
Always my fav with the constant rooster noises ๐Ÿ˜‚ www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeZGFygmQ6g
how safe would you say Siargao Island is?
safer than palawan probably?
Are you concerned with threats caused by humans or nature? My girlfriend went there last year without any concern (FWIW she is also Filipino) but they did have a typhoon hit last year that caused some damage. It cancelled her first trip.
Humans ๐Ÿ˜› I guess nature can be dangerous anywhere on the Philippines.
Are there any nice diving sites for beginners (first timer here) you can go to from Bohol/Panglao? I hear that Apo Island is amazing, but impossible/discouraged for first timers.
Siargao should be OK, most of the terrosist issues have been in the western parts of Mindanao and even that concern has been reduced quite a bit in the last year. I even made a day trip to Lake Sebu, Cotabato last year and all went well. There have been talks of lifting Martial Law in Mindanao lately too. I'd say the primary threat for Siargao might be NPA but they've been awfully well behaved lately.
thanks man ๐Ÿ™‡ that's reassuring
Hey Guys. Any social events, like boardgame events and such near Manila? Internations and meetups are dead. How do you meet people here??
xsvfrq you could try couchsurfing hangouts in the mobile app
Might bike to Moalboal for a few days. Anywhere else I might want to consider?
Hey guys! Iโ€™ve been thinking on visiting Manilla on my visa run, what โ€œmust haveโ€ things to do here in your opinion? I havenโ€™t been in Philippines yet. Also what do you thing good amount of days? A week, but working at daytime? 2-3 days without workking?
Eat tacos at El Chupacabra and marvel at the dystopian hellscape that is Manila!
I usually go for about five to seven days and have two days to just mess around (grab a camera and go visit some rundown but historical area... which is not actually all that safe or wise). Manila is the only place I visit where I feel like coworking is pretty much necessary if you don't wanna struggle with internet access or speed.
Thanks! cwghzswm why not safe? Is it like any different from other asian cities?
Yeah, absolutely. If you look like a lost gringo or you're carrying a nice camera or fat wallet around there are places where you will be targeted. Stick to Makati or BGC and it's probably no big deal tho.
I got hassled a bunch in Binondo and Old Manila when I went over there to shoot some photos. Mostly desperate and poor ppl, not armed gangs or anything.
absrbjjx Manila is INTERESTING to experience but absolutely not safe, it's unlike any other Asian cities and I'd say one of the most dangerous cities in Asia comparably to Latin American cities
prolly nothing will happen to you but things CAN happen
taxi drivers lock their doors, there's armed guards in front of every big building etc.
malls with giant armed guards
Manila is a shitshow IMHO
Makati is a weird rich part of Manila also heavily armed and guarded because financial center
I suggest visiting it for travel beacuse it's so interesting but not for nomading unless you like to not work
BGC is the nicest area. Makati has gotten way too congested over the years. BGC has its own traffic rules (including proper lanes and traffic lights). Jeepneys aren't allowed in most of BGC
Yeah, BGC is so different from the rest of Manila. It's your little, nicer world with everything in it, sans the need to brave the usual Manila traffic as you can easily walk around
would be cool if BGC was larger
my personal definition of a city is probably at least 50 square miles, so I'm always disconcerted when a tiny area is considered its own "city"
If you want clean then BGC is the way to go. I kinda like Poblacion, red light district but where all the hipster places are
Wow, I had no idea that Manilla is not safe, thanks for heads up. I think Iโ€™ll just go for a couple of days :)
Just stay in central Makati where it's totally fine imo. Or BGC of course. I'e walked a lot there and it's pretty much always full of people anyway.
gvrsbg just arrived in ๐ŸŒ† Manila, #philippines
Wanna ask about Mandaluyong, it seems itโ€™s really close to Makati
Is it okay to live in there?
just for 3 days
danbzygr it's fine
yfslnvxa just arrived in ๐ŸŒ† Manila, #philippines
Any recommendations for scooter rental in Cebu?
blovavx just arrived in Davao City, #philippines
> At least eight people have been killed and 120 hospitalized after drinking coconut wine in the Philippines
Can't post a link yet (still < 90 days) but wanted to give you all a heads-up! Might be best to stick to the Red Horse for the holidays!
> Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker went on a limited run in the Philippines from December 20 to 22. It returns to Philippine cinemas on January 8, 2020.
This is because the annual Manila film festival fill up nationwide theaters with local-made movies. No hollywood movies will be running in cinemas during this time. Happens every year.
lohcrorykmwwk ah nice!
Hey! I want to spend some time in Siargao next year. Has anyone been there as a digital nomad? I'd like to know if internet is ok, if there are any work-friendly cafes and so on. It's a place I really want to visit but I don't know if it's the most reliable place to work. Thanks!!
I hear only bad things but haven't been myself.
rpobvgd internet is pretty bad there. There are some cafes, but usually they donโ€™t offer wifi. What Iโ€™d recommend is buying Globe at Home modem for 1000PHP I think it is comes with 10gb I get around 10mbps with good LTE signal.
Pocket wifis are junk, as is the Smart one. Only one Iโ€™ve had luck with is Globe at Home. Most places are starting to get Fiber Optic though. Davao has it, smaller cities around it have it, Panglao, Bohol has it. So maybe wait a year? Or try your luck with the Globe at Home
Siargo is cool though we stayed right near Bravo Beach Resort Siargao if you Google Maps it thatโ€™s a perfect spot
which bank's ATMs have the least strict withdrawal limits?
> ๐ŸŽ‰ โ€œAt midnight (Tuesday), the martial law in Mindanao will end after two years and seven months or 953 days of effectivity,โ€
Not exactly sure what a Mindanao not under martial looks like, as it's been under "martial law:tm:" since I've been here ๐Ÿค”
In IT Park, Cebu City until 14.03. (most of the time at least). Anyone up for a Red Horse or beverage of your choice?
I'm in IT Park most days too. Up for food :D
Sounds good too! I'll pm you later
I'm gonna be in Manila for a week and then have 3 weeks of vacation, any good recommendations for destinations for some exploring, nature and beaches?
From Manila you can take a flight to Palawan, then Cebu (go to the south) and Siargao
komykvuvrfdrg I'm flying to cebu on friday... will be there for around a week. you still in town? ๐Ÿ™‚
I'll be in town the next three weeks for sure! Just pm when you're around ๐Ÿ™‚
Excellent! Will ping ๐Ÿ™‚
Hey all! Nice to meet you.

I'm considering heading to this paradise called Philippines for two months in Feb!

Just wanted to ask a super common question (I can guess it's been asked at least 100 times in different forms, yet I can't use the search as I guess that requires a paid Slack account. It seems I can't scroll up either unless I upgrade). Here goes.

How good is cellular data coverage in some of the remote islands of the Philippines nowadays in 2020? I know Internet is generally slow in the Philippines, but I don't really care about speed too much, more about connectivity (usually just need to clear an e-mail inbox / SSH / etc). Therefore any kind of data connection would be good.

I'm referring to destinations like El Nido, Coron, Dumaguete, Manjuyod, Oslob, Badian, Panglao, Bohol, & Siargao. I won't be spending too much time in populous cities (e.g. Manila) where coverage is guaranteed to be good.

Thanks for any insights, and hoping to meet some of you down there!
On remote islands probably close to non-existent. But I would like to hear about specific spots too. I've been to a few of the places mentioned in the past but not for working.
lzkceleokp just get both Globe and Smart SIM cards and you should have coverage
Generally applicable tip use OpenSignal app to check cellular data availability in the particular area
jlviprfcz and wpxlgclauer these are two extremely valuable tips! I really appreciate it ๐Ÿ™‚ Will definitely be getting both sim cards!
And the OpenSignal app is a godsend! I can't believe I haven't heard of it until now. Awesome tip mate. Looks like coverage is really comprehensive actually!
After checking coverage in the locations I mentioned above, pretty much all of them have some kind of coverage! If not directly there, maybe a short drive away. Woohoo! ๐ŸŽ‰
kpcjpaixjd I find the signal to be fine in Davao, Bohol, Samal and Boracay, as they said just get the Globe/Smart sims and know that not everywhere will have good signal so maybe rent a place for a bit then check for long-term spot that has good LTE signal. With good LTE signal you can get a Globe at Home and get 10-20MBPS for cheap. Most places are getting fiber optic now too, but I always have the GatHome for backup.
I found smart to have better coverage in cebu and boracay fwiw
My girl could often watch youtube (smart) and I could barely load webpages (globe)
Also the smart sim still worked when we got back to vietnam, and my globe sim died immediately, so maybe theres some roaming on that
Super helpful info guys, appreciate it ๐Ÿ™‚
anyone has any tips to work from coron?
Hey all, i'm planning a trip to the Phillipines in mid-Feb, i'm looking to surf as well as training some MMA. I was looking at Siargao, there's an interesting looking gym there, SOS, and its a popular surf spot. Preferably I want my accomodation near a good surfing beach and the gym - looks like the area around General Luna is the place to be. Anyone haave any experiences there - thoughts, recommdendations?
Does someone know situation about Taal volcano at Manila? I have tickets to Manila at Monday and a bit scary ๐Ÿ˜„
Yeah, it's not looking good right now. The eruption continues, and magma is moving around beneath the surface. Could get worse at any time. Make sure to confirm your flight; many were diverted to Clark last time Taal spewed ash.
Okay thanks. But is there a danger to consider to cancel the trip?
If I had a ticket to Manila right now I'd definitely be second guessing myself. Not for fear of personal injury, but certainly because conditions on the ground might worsen at any time, so there's some extra risk involved in going, and it might become difficult to leave.
It's clear right now, but who knows if it'll stay that way. ๐Ÿคท
My girlfriend lives in the area currently, so I get daily updates.
Thank you guys, Iโ€™ll wait for couple more days and then decide what to do yxybnbvniujfciklh donโ€™t mind if I ask you in a couple of days about update?
At this short notice, I'd just change plans. Not going to have much certainty in the short-term. ๐Ÿค”
Try searching Twitter for "Phivolcs Taal" and you should pull up some quasi-official information
