I do plan to rent long term but thought travelling few months here and there for work (esp back to the UK) would jeopardise the longterm residency plan

The best areas depends a lot of your budget for renting an apartment. In both places is hard to find apartments avialable for more than one year because of the new reting law. Maybe your coworker can helps you if you finally decide to move to Madrid but I can also help because I was living in Madrid region for almost 30 years. Write me a DM if you need additional or specific info. The same for anyone who be in the same situation
mrisoli 10d
Iโ€™ve been in Barcelona for 3+ years now, I agree with people that locals seem hard to connect, Barcelona is very international, I initially moved here for a job and most people at the company were foreigner, with foreigner friends and this seems to be a common occurrence, Iโ€™ve also lived in Sweden though and Iโ€™d say Barcelona is easier than that to make friends, itโ€™s however not as easy as latin america
mrisoli 10d
I think rent/finding apartment is hard in both places, Madrid has more people but Barcelona is more compact, with a few of exceptions most areas in Barcelona city proper are not bad places to live, also being compact you can get pretty quickly to most places with public transport
mrisoli 10d
Barcelona is also more dangerous than your average european city but itโ€™s not even close to being actually dangerous, most of the issues is petty crimes, Barcelona does have extreme amounts of tourism for its size so thatโ€™s one thing I could recommend is to live far away from tourist spots, it will be cheaper(maybe), and calmer

Lisbon 2,500 EUR? hard to believe these things
knocte 10d
I'd recommend ING (you only need to have the incoming money every month as a fee-waiver if you choose the "Nomina account", but I chose the "No-Cuenta" kind and it's fully free without need to get a monthly salary on the account); works with bizum too

uhjkznqj welcome to 2023
mrisoli 10d
Iโ€™ve been looking into moving my main account to ING, do you have experience with it? Recommend it?(ever needed support etc)
I receive a salary from a spanish entity so Iโ€™d get fees waivered in a nomina account anyway
elpol 10d
pjlbywpp in Feb 2022 we paid 1300/mo for a fucking basement, I believe it
knocte 9d
yeah then I'd recommend it; because the only disadvantage I find with it wouldn't apply to you with "NoCuenta" accounts, getting cash from non-ING atms always ask for a fee
knocte 9d
but for Nomina accounts is fine, so long as you get 50eur or more, see www.ing.es/oficinas-cajeros/cajeros
knocte 9d
(that's in theory, I haven't been able to test it in practice because I don't have a Nomina account)

I wonder if they are comparing apples to oranges in terms of location. Like, super strict city center for Lisbon vs a bigger area for others? It really sounds unbelievable it would be so expensive

Folks who have lived in Spain for some time I hear everyone gets out of the big cities in the summer months? Iโ€™m supposed to be in Barcelona for a year, but Iโ€™m wondering if itโ€™s a bad idea and I should go somewhere else for the summer ๐Ÿค”
I leave barcelona on the summer because of the weather and the prices. So yeah, might be a good idea.
All depends on your situation, many apartments will increase their prices (like, more than double sometimes) so thatโ€™s a main reason why people leave.
But if you get a guaranteed price year round and you like Barcelona and want to stay, then stay
I was able to open an account with Sabadell with only a passport before I got my NIEโ€ฆ as the other person said, theyโ€™re a fine bank โ€” not great, not terrible
This was like 7 years ago so things might be different (and, as is the norm in Spain, each branch will tell you something different and sometimes each person within that branch will contradict what another person said)

I was trying for the past two weeks to find a place in Madrid and it is hard. People answer to my DMs from FB groups after 3 days and expect everything to happen in a minute. That is not tourist friendly at all. Barcelona seems easier with finding they at least answer fast. Never had an issue booking a place to stay. If you guys know a group or somebody who can help find a place for two weeks in either Barcelona or Madrid please connect me. Anybody knows if there are any Salsa/Bachata groups because the ones I found online are almost non-existent.
Does anyone have recommendations for small to medium size towns/cities in Catalonia to live full time and start a family? Probably 15k-200k people. We are thinking maybe Terrassa, but have been discussing looking at smaller towns too.

Hi everyone, Iโ€™m moving to Barcelona before the end of the year and wanted to know if any of you know how to find an apartment to sublet, Iโ€™m planning to move there but I want to find a temporary place first to see which part of the city I like best.

Iโ€™ve tried to find on Idealista or fotocasa, but they only seem to post regular rental ads.

Have you tried the temp rental options of ShBarcelona? Alternately you can check out SpotAHome to rent a room for a few months; otherwise indeed the ads on idealista are mainly long term, esp now that the peak of summer rental is over
aleg 5d
Hey, thank you for the tips. I havenโ€™t checked the 2 first options but Iโ€™ll definetly take a look.
aleg 5d
I might also book a room in a coliving for a few months, as Barcelona seems to be full of them.

Thanks a lot, Iโ€™ll look into :slightly_smiling_face:
Iโ€™ve already contacted Enso. They seem to have lots of rooms available for November, but itโ€™s still a bit expensive in my opinion.
I've hired an immigration attorney to assist me with the digital nomad visa application. Next time that I speak with her I will ask for clarification on the requirements for long term residency.

Hi, I've been trying to find a studio/penthouse with beach-side view for up to 1200โ‚ฌ/monthly to rent in Gran Canaria from December to April. Over the past 2 weeks I've been sending messages to Idealista renters. So far, I've only received 1 reply. Most of these flats are now also already rented out (listings have been removed).

This is the message I sent to the 20~ flats I've been interested in:
"Hola, estoy muy interesado en este apartamento y me gustarรญa hacer una visita. Actualmente estoy en Eslovenia, pero le pedirรญa a mi amigo que viniera a verlo, si le parece bien.
Saludos cordiales"

Now I plan to get into some Whatsapp groups for Gran Canaria flat rentals... Is there a better way to go about this? Does anyone have any learnings to share with me?
hiradm 3d
Iโ€™ve been grappling with Idealista for about 10 days now. Learnings so far:

โ€ข Definitely setup a saved search you get new listings that match your criteria in your inbox as soon as theyโ€™re published.
โ€ข Gotta be very aggressive with the agencies โ€“ now I call first, if that doesnโ€™t work try to message on WhatsApp and on Idealista. Iโ€™ve found if youโ€™re messaging on Idealista, youโ€™re almost certainly not gonna get a response.
For some reason, there are a ton of stale listings on Idealista as well. I donโ€™t get it. Iโ€™ve managed to see 4 places in the last week or so from this approach. Muchos suertes ๐Ÿ™‚

Be sure they really want to rent for few months. Idealista is more focus on long stay, at least 1 year. Maybe Airbnb works better. Probably sounds strange for a local owner used to deal with locals than someone who is not living there ask for a visit. Maybe provide more context info about who you are, share profesional profile o simple call them whether the number appears to talk directly to the owner.
You can survive with AC, but yes, Barcelona and in general all the county except the north and montains areas the temperatures are normally higher than 35 degrees on July and August
hiradm 1d
Iโ€™ve found the opposite price-wise. Apparently, Airbnbs in BCN need permits, which the city no longer gives out. The studio Iโ€™m in in El Raval is ~โ‚ฌ1900 on Airbnb (including Airbnb fees). If I wanted to rent something comparable furnished, itโ€™d be closer to โ‚ฌ1100.
