Hey Nomads ๐Ÿ‘‹ I am going to Istambul for a month from 20 Nov. Any recommendations where to stay to explore the city for the first time. I am thinking to stay in Beyoglu , as I see this area is full of entertainment, near to different coworking spaces and cultural sights, but is it authentic for Istanbul? Or where digital nomads stay there usually?
danielzal 1mo
โ€ฆalso if you know someone renting out an apartment, let me know!
qmaroon 1mo
Iโ€™ve been living in Kadikoy (Rasimpasa, Moda) for a year, highly recommend this district, you can easilygo to Karakoy (Beyoglu) by ferry

Anybody wanna do a road trip across turkey? I'm in Istanbul right now
danielzal 1mo
sounds like a great area, thanks for sharing!
What's the current vibe with travel to Turkiye? My wife and two friends are meant to head there in a few weeks, but my friends are feeling a little anxious with so many conflicts close by.
my pov from istanbul itโ€™s mostly chill, with some protests and demonstrations against israel. however, given all the conflicts nearby, things can escalate pretty quickly in an unpredictable way, so take that into consideration as youโ€™re making travel plans
felixha 1mo
to clarify, this is just regarding the current vibe, from what i experienced in the last two weeks. besides that istanbul is a very impressive city, stunning architecture. met some very friendly and welcoming people, had good food etc. hope it calms down soon
mikedev10 1mo
i've stayed in beyoglu 2-4 weeks on 3 trips to istanbul, typically not far from istiklal. have always enjoyed staying in that area.
xapqsxkgh Yeesh, that's a little scary. You mentioned you met _some_ friendly people, but was the general vibe unwelcome?
Definitely feeling a little sketched out, thinking we might just make some other plans. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
felixha 1mo
Well, I don't expect to be liked by everyone, especially when I'm not fluent in the local language. I had a good time with students. They also know how to circumvent the internet censorship to get different perspectives. But yes, in general I'd say the vibe at this time was unwelcome. Even Turkish jews say they don't feel safe anymore

There's also a lot of scams. Higher prices on the English menu in restaurants, getting charged for things you didn't ask for, haggling with almost every taxi driver. It's worse than gringo pricing in LatAm. I've been told this was a problem in Istanbul before but maybe now with the anti-west rhetoric they feel more justified in ripping you off

Anyone else experiencing the worst WiFi in Istanbul? Over a year DNing around Europe and South America with no issues, but Iโ€™m getting dropped on every third Zoom meeting here. Even my mobile hotspot isnโ€™t working super well here.
Iโ€™ve been here since Sept 22, and Iโ€™ve honestly experienced no change with people in Istanbul 1:1 even when they know Iโ€™m American. Theyโ€™re probably the nicest and most helpful people Iโ€™ve met abroad.

People say and do idiotic things in large groups in every country.

I came across one protest a couple weekends ago and just walked away. Otherwise, I wouldnโ€™t know anything had happened.

Hi all! Just arrived in Istanbul for the first time and will be here for 10 days. What are the best places to go and potentially meet people (expats or local, doesn't matter) as a solo traveler? I love trying local food, rooftop bars and live music. Also, I heard going out alone as a woman is a little bit weird here - any thoughts on that? Feel free to DM me ๐Ÿ˜Š
sntnli 29d
depends which side of Istanbul you are. Asian or Europian?
sntnli 29d
hey and welcome to Istanbul ๐Ÿ‘‹ and also i saw you are coming to nomadlist meetup on 14 November.

Im living here but end of November will start to travel. So i can help you about all your questions. First of all which side of Istanbul you are? Asian or Europian? I will prepare and send you a list
coribzz 29d
Thanks! I'm in European side, in Dolapdere area I think it's called!
descon 29d
Thanks for your response! Havenโ€™t got an airbnb yet, i like kadikoy but it seems that more english speakers on the European side? Perhaps cihangir is better to stay?
sntnli 29d
omg im living at Kadikoy - Fikirtepe also. And there is a โ€œespressolab coffee shopโ€ here, like there my office %100! everyday im going to there and there is a lot of developers and startup guys. Of Asian side English speakers around of Kadฤฑkรถy, like you can love also โ€œBagdat Streetโ€ line. Europe side better for English speaker level but also touristic and more chaotic. Like yeah Cihangir is okay, also NiลŸantaลŸฤฑ, BeลŸiktaลŸ, Levent etc. you will never have problem there as language
sntnli 29d
you can ask me anything anytime btw im feeling too happy when i can help to people
sntnli 28d
Hello again U03NHM023ATbr />
I am writing here knowingly, if there are others visiting Istanbul, I wanted it to be a guide that would make it easier for everyone. I prepared it with real care :)

First of all, Dolapdere is close to everywhere and in a very central location. But yes, being a single woman for that area may just require you to be a little careful late at night.

Galataport here you can meet many local and foreign people and enjoy the sea and the Bosphorus with the most beautiful view possible. There are also many restaurants, cafes and rooftops. I can say that it is one of the first places you should visit, considering the weather. I think Galataport is a place that shows the most modern side of Turkey.

Bebek Again, one of the most beautiful locations in Istanbul, where you can meet many local and foreign people. You will have the chance to work against one of the best views in the world by purchasing a large size filter from Starbucks for only 2 dollars :)

NiลŸantaลŸฤฑ, Cihangir, Taksim, BeลŸiktaลŸ These are also among the beautiful and interesting neighborhoods of the European side.

I can also list the touristic places you must see on the European side Hagia Sophia, Galata Tower, Sultan Ahmet Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar.

Kadฤฑkรถy If you go to BeลŸiktaลŸ, please take a ferry (you will probably have a wonderful journey with a ticket price of :heavy_dollar_sign:0.50 and take great photos), take the ferry to Kadฤฑkรถy, buy 2 bagels before getting on the ferry and travel by throwing them to the seagulls. Donโ€™t forget to buy tea while on the ferry, it is very enjoyable and delicious. When you come to Kadฤฑkรถy, you will see the places you want to go just by looking left and right. The heart of the Anatolian side beats in Kadฤฑkรถy. I also live in Kadฤฑkรถy. If you come to Kadฤฑkรถy, the places you should definitely visit are Moda, Fenerbahรงe and BaฤŸdat Street. There is a newly opened espressolab (coffee shop) in Moda, and you will have the chance to work with nice people while buying very cheap coffee, while looking at the magnificent view.

There is also an old ferry pier opposite the coffee shop I mentioned, they renovated it last year and made it a library and study area. You can socialize, take photos, read books or work for free.

I am writing here the local delicacies that you should definitely try (I write in Turkish, it will be easy for you to find them :)

Kebap
Lahmacun
Kรถfte
Bรถrek
Midye Dolma
Balฤฑk Ekmek
Kumpir
