Bologna is considered one of the best cities in Italy. The city doesn't hold any world-famous monument as it could be Pisa's tower, but has one of the oldest universities in the world (with much of it converted to a museum), is home to the best and well known meals (lasagna, mortadella, tortellini, just to mention few), is home to so many famous people that I cannot even count, has the headquarters of the gay association (with one of the nicest night clubs in the city), there are almost 16000 st

Very beautiful and atmospheric city, but firstly it's very expensive to stay in Venice itself (even in winter, I thought rent prices are on the level with Zurich lol) so many people rent a place/hostel in Mestre, it's like 10 minutes train ride to Venice, kinda smarter. And after a while navigating the city which is literally a maze becomes quite old. Recommend to visit Murano by the way.

It's great to see for 6 months to 1 year and explore the local culture which arguably is quite similar to Greek or Spanish. Food is amazing and affordable. As a tourist, especially if you are from western Europe, you will feel safe and welcome. To put it into context, for people actually living there, organized crime, car thefts, corruption on literally all levels can become challenging.
