Does anyone know European mail-scanning services (similar to Earth Class Mail)?

by @dpt 9yr  | 9 comments

Iโ€™m looking for a service like Earth Class Mail that scans my physical mail and emails it for me. There seems to be tons of services like that in the US, but Iโ€™d need one in Europe (bonus points for flashy locations like Switzerland).

I did some research and found some virtual office services that would offer such a service, but they all seem to charge ~70โ‚ฌ/month and thatโ€™s a little too much for the 2-3 letters per month I receive.

Hello! What are some of the services youโ€™ve seen in the US? Iโ€™m interested in signing up for something like this.

@AliJay79 there are many services like that in the US. There are EarthClassMail, USAMail1, and many others of which I forgot the names. But I think theyโ€™re pretty easy to find on google or so.

Iโ€™m personally use MyUSAOffice, which is a bit expensive but I need it because I need an address in a certain state that the others donโ€™t offer for tax reasons.

@everyone else: thanks for the tips! Iโ€™ll try out either dropscan or the Swiss Post Office.

I can only agree that their support is quite fast.
One thing I forgot to mention is that payment is done through direct debit, which means a German current account is needed - unless SEPA debits are possible these days, but still that only covers the EU (or even only the Euro zone).

What you want is offered by dropscan.de (based in Germany). There is a pay-as-you go and a monthly flatrate option. They scan the envelope, letting you decide whether you want the letter opened and then scan the contents for download. The physical mail can be forwarded too (or be destroyed). You will need a German address, but no ID verification is necessary.

This seems to have been discussed in this forum as well: how-do-you-receive-physical-mail-as-a-digital-nomad

I am using dropscan for half a year now โ€“ forwarded my personal as well as some business mail there, while travelling since January. I can highly recommend them. Their support is fast and nice enough, they also scanned the letter that where inside another letter upon asking. The only unfortunate thing is that they canโ€™t be used as an official โ€œbusiness addressโ€ (in German law). But thatโ€™s fine enough.

Hi,

Check ubidoca in France, near the border of switzerland. They have super cheap prices for those kind of servicesโ€ฆI am using them for parcels dispatch and receiving for one of my business and as a virtual office. Cost like 40โ‚ฌ a month in my case, but for only letters they have cheap plansโ€ฆThe cheapest I found so farโ€ฆ

The cheapest thing is to check all paper mails, calling the companies that sent them and tell them that they should send you only eMails, no letters. So you can limit the mail to a minimum.
Then having parents or friends in your hometown that can get your mail would be the #1 choice. I would only hiring a company if there is really no other option.

Hi,

I used in the past the service from SwissPostBox and it was working very well.

They have a free service that allows you to receive physical mail and then you can decide, letter by letter, if you want them to open and scan (to help decide they provide a scan of the non-opened letters, for both sides). You then pay only the letter you ask to open. You can also decide to forward your letters to another physical location.

In the past (2-3 years ago) they were offering several physical adresses in Switzerland, France or Germany (some free of charge and some with a premium, for kind of โ€˜prestigiousโ€™ addresses).

You can check here what are the actual condition and try the service: https://www.post.ch/en/customer-center/all-online-services/swiss-post-box/info

Note that they will require an authenticated copy of your ID or passport (which can be done for a small fee in any swiss post office, if you are passing around Switzerland), but you can probably also to this kind of authentification from a foreign country.

Cheers,

Sam

Is anyone travelling right now?

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 4yr 4 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack 4yr 4 years ago  | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

Best place to set up a company selling digital services?

by @pras_k 5yr 5 years ago  | 10 comments

Whatโ€™s the best place?
For residency Iโ€™m looking at Portugal and they have the NHR (non habitual resident) program which would exempt dividends from foreign income.
So all Iโ€™m really looking for is the best place to actually start the company.
Biggest factors are of course low taxes and ease of setting up the company plus a business bank account that enables me to receive payments through Stripe.

What I found so far:
Hong Kong
Corporate tax rate of 16.5% (8.25% for the first HK$2 million)
โŠ•/โŠ– offshore income from outside HK is exempt from taxation but itโ€™s not clear whether this can be done in the first year and prorated or if itโ€™s only through filing the offshore exemption claim. This might take two years and requires not income from HK at all. More info on that would be great
โŠ– seems very difficult to get a business bank account
โŠ– necessary services and fees are roughly around โ‚ฌ2000 / year
โŠ– accounting requirements seem to be very strict
โŠ• Doesnโ€™t require local partner
โŠ• Agencies available that seem to handle most of the work

Singapore
Corporate tax rate of 17% (0% on the first S$100k, 8.5% up to S$300k)
โŠ– requires a local director. What are the implications of this?

Malta
Corporate tax rate of 35%
There is the โ€œfull imputation systemโ€ but I donโ€™t really understand it.
"In most cases, the tax refund to the shareholder is 6/7 of the tax paid by the company on profits distributed as dividends. The tax refund rate may be different in the following cases: " This would result in an effective corporate tax of around 5%.
โŠ– European customers would have to pay VAT and Iโ€™d have to deal with that

Cyprus
Corporate tax rate of 12.5% and there seem to be ways to lower this
โŠ– European customers would have to pay VAT and Iโ€™d have to deal with that
โŠ– requires staying in Cyprus for 2 months / year

I find it surprising how much research this requires and how much โ€œit dependsโ€ information is out there when Iโ€™d assume that there are probably thousands of digital nomads who probably have very similar requirements.

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce 5yr 5 years ago  | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Whatโ€™s a good European call & SMS forwarding service?

by @adrienbetweets 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi all

What do you guys use for receiving both sms & calls on a European phone number?

Iโ€™d like to have a phone number that does not change for at least 1 or 2 years.

I did my homework & found this thread but itโ€™s only about US services so I donโ€™t think itโ€™s relevant: Whatโ€™s a good US call and SMS forwarding service?
Also, I looked into Google Hangout but it doesnโ€™t support European phone numbers.

Best European Ski Towns?

Anyone here resident in Portugal with incorporation elsewhere in the EU? Need some advice

in Portugal by @solardive 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everyone!

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโ€™m not planning to go full erm, โ€œtax optimisationโ€, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.

Iโ€™ve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโ€™m a EU citizen), but I donโ€™t want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?

Thanks!

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

in Sihanoukville , Cambodia by @keybrownhill 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!
