Anyone has some digital nomad horror stories to share?

by @ricricucit 9yr  | 2 comments

Hi Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for someone with one or more โ€œDigital Nomad horror Storiesโ€ to share with other Digital Nomads here (as a comment of this post) or even better:
in Berlin (actually outside Berlin in a beautiful workation retreat), in mid-August, around a campfire organized by http://coconat-space.com/ .

If anyone has some stories to share, Weโ€™ll be happy to host him/her in Coconat for couple of days in exchange of his/her horror story

Thank you!

<15>P.S.
Digital Nomadsโ€™ horror stories are those โ€œhorrorโ€ stories happened to a digital nomad while travelling, while working. They could be about a client lost because of a no-internet-connection-situation, a important flight lost, an exploding server that couldnโ€™t had been reached, a transfer from-city-to-city where a Laptop got stolen, etc.

Anything that could remind that Digital Nomadism could become horror for non-experienced travellers/nomads.
Something that might remind people that Digital Nomad is a choice (with ups and downs), and not only a simple vacation.

โ€“ It doesnโ€™t have to end up to be the scariest story ever.
โ€“ It can be an horror-comedy story or even have an happy ending
โ€“ It can even be a story that didnโ€™t even happen, but that โ€“at leastโ€“ includes a bit of realism (a sort of Digital Nomad Fabel  )
โ€“ It can have been happen to someone else youโ€™ve met (as long as the person youโ€™ve met is ok with you telling it)

Thank you for sharing.

@skatkov 9yr

Iโ€™ve been helping out some charities in Thailand and with one particular one which got a lot of traction in press. As all charities we had some money issues and we looking forward for anyone to chip in with โ€˜goodโ€™ donation so we could raise his public status in Thailand. (giving press and some connections)

Weโ€™ve meet one guy who had business related to selling forests/food. Those guys are well connected and have some money in their pocket, but most of guys iโ€™ve seen before are quite spoiled/not pleasant people to deal with (itโ€™s a tuff business to get into, you have to have some connections or good parents). But this guy weโ€™ve meet was extremely nice, totally not โ€œthat typeโ€ of people iโ€™ve seen doing that business.

We showed him around thailand had some good time with him. And decided to offer him to cheap in to this โ€˜projectโ€™. he was happy to help and even more happy to get some positive press about him. Iโ€™ve noticed some small strange โ€˜thingsโ€™ about him, but failed to connect those red flags to get full picture.

  • He was extremely energetic about some of his sexual experiences. And was trying to share his experience with all of us, but nobody cared.
  • At his home, iโ€™ve noticed a lot of cheap phones lying around. (itโ€™s not a good sign, because some people use those one time to arrange some โ€˜dirtyโ€™ deals and then throw them away).
  • He was extremely knowledgable about how kids in different school grades look like (schools have different rules how children should look like)
  • He really wanted us to be on his side. Tried to lure us on his side, he was trying to promise me some of his business (even iโ€™ve told him, iโ€™m not that interested). He really insisted i should do business with him, later on trying to find other approaches towards me. Later on I understood, that he was trying it with all of us separately.

Obviously, we ran into problems because of him. He managed to lure in one of our team mates to his side and told him some strange things about us. Weโ€™ve had some trust issues between us and only after we sit down without him, we connected all the dots and understood that is happening.

This guy turned out to be a pedophile and we helped a wrong guy, with positive image in Thailand. I was thinking about turning him in, but all those clues we got are hard to prove. So we just made sure that people in our circle knew who he is.

So, my lesson would be : be extremely aware with who you are dealing with (especially in Thailand). If someone is extremely friendly and nice without a reason, ask yourself โ€œwhy?โ€.

Iโ€™m not saying that there nice people are not existent. Iโ€™m just saying that most horrible kind of people (like Chikatilo) are publicly known as โ€˜very nice guysโ€™.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

How to get into the digital nomad lifestyle?

in Switzerland by @filiptk 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.

I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is โ€“ how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?

How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

I'd be happy to get some insight into how things work and also happy to network with anyone interested.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Any Ph.D students dissertating while a digital nomad?

by @larsheather 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

Anyone know of any groups or resources for Ph.D. students working on dissertation while living as a digital nomad? I know there are several virtual writing groups around, but wondered if there were any specifically for digital nomads, particularly those who are dissertating.

Thanks!

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen 4yr 4 years ago  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

How do you invest internationally as a nomad?

by @mateuszwieloch 4yr 4 years ago  | 17 comments

I have finally saved enough money to start investing. What company gives good, diversified access to stock, ETFs and mutual funds? Does it make sense to use company like Vanguard or Fidelity for that? Iโ€™m a EU/Poland citizen, how would I transfer my money back and forth without incurring significant fees?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks
Mark

How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira 4yr 4 years ago  | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!
