Can I use my laptop to call into conference calls remotely?

by @dave4peace 9yr  | 11 comments

Hi Nomads,
First, I am very appreciative of this Forum, have read a lot of very helpful feedback to questions to previous folks questions.

Currently, landing in Hong Kong in about 2 months with no true Nomad experience other than working remotely, as a US Citizen, from home to a US Bank here in the States. My normal workday is remaining constantly in meetings using a Conference software called โ€œLyncโ€ on my work machine. Usually, i can have Lync call my cell phone with no problem in the US, of course.

Question:
Can I do the same Lync Conference, as above, while working abroad, substituting my cell phone with a personal laptop with microphone wherever I work? (presuming: 1) good internet, 2) Skype/GoogleVoice, installed on personal laptop). Basically, my work laptop would be calling Skype on my personal laptop, right? Can this work, cheaply, for 40+ hours of calls per week? Does Skype have country limitations? How does this work in combination with Google Voice, any cheaper? I read GV only works only for certain countries (HK, China, Thailand are okay). Any folks here know what a 40 hour week costs, on average, having this type of setup (Skype and/or GV, or other combo)? All new to meโ€ฆ will just have to try it, and, let you know, if no one has done it here.

Thanks for any suggestions with this!!!
Dave

Keep in mind that if youโ€™re going to be using Skype/Google Voice you definitely want a solid, stable internet connection (at least 5Mbs) or calls will be much more challenging.

And out of curiosity, what type of job do you have? Iโ€™ve never heard of being on conference calls 40 hours/week.

Further to the great suggestions. Plantronics c720 works great for me. I almost exclusively work remotely including from developing countries very frequently. For many of my calls itโ€™s very important to have clarity and low noise.

I use google voice on my smart phone. you have to install both hangouts and google voice dialer but then you can use it just like any other phone service.

both skype and google voice can give you a US phone number that can be called in and out. skype has a fee though I think depending on what you need. google voice is free. i use it for everything.

Hi Wanderingdev,
Had read some of your discussions, and, other responses. Those were also VERY helpful, too!! THANKS!!!

As you suggest, here, will try both Skype/GV, just to compare quality/costโ€ฆ will be interesting comparison between work and personal laptop, too. Also, maybe use one for the other as an audio fail-over. Google voice seems to be the vote, so far!! Any suggestions on a favorite microphone? Thanks, again!

@yaustar 9yr

The Wirecutter has some comparisons on Mics and and headsets.

I havenโ€™t tried Google Voice as Iโ€™m in the UK but for Skype calling out was quite expensive on a Pay as You go plan. If you are going to use it for 8hrs per day to call out, you might want to check for intentional call packages as they would be much cheaper.

With Skype, it looks like it be ยฃ6 for unlimited calls to the US per month.

Google voice all the way!
I have skype+gvoice but i primarily use gvoice for everything, including receiving calls from customers etc. Works very well. Some imperfections here and there but the convenience is great and itโ€™s mostly free (I end up paying them a good amount because I make lots of international calls using it too).

Hey Dave,

Iโ€™m a little confused on what you are trying to get as an outcome. As far as I know, Lync can make calls without owning a phone so can you continue using that?

Otherwise:

Do you need a US based number that people can call and you can answer up on your laptop?
Do you need something that can call out to make a call from your laptop?
Are you just after a conferencing service that other people can use?
Do you need to use your laptop? Is there a reason for not wanting to use your cell phone?

Hey Yaustar,
No problem! It is very confusing for me, and, to know โ€œwhatโ€ and โ€œhowโ€ to ask can be daunting with this type of thing. Most folks are not โ€œcorporateโ€ employees on the Nomad Forum, here, would estimateโ€ฆ and, therefore, corporate is a different paradigm with itโ€™s own set of challenges and unknowns.

Your first answer, does make sense, and, what i would think, as well. My teammate actually encouraged me to try downloading a software that should work by using the work laptopโ€™s audio as a phone, will test the work and personal laptops to compare phone functionality. Will be on vacation, but, this will help me and my team, if i remain in the loop a bit, at least.

From your list of questions, answers:

  1. Do you need a US based numberโ€ฆ (Yes)
  2. Do you need something that can call out โ€ฆ (Yes)
  3. (Just using Lync, in this case, No)
  4. (Yes, my understanding from other discussions on Nomad List, here, the cell phone is much more expensive for international calls. My needs are 8 to 10 hours per day on meetings, mostly on Lync conference calls).

Apologies for delays in responding, we work day and night, quite often, and, remain on Lync most of the time. BIG THANKS for your response and questions, Yaustar!

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon99 3yr 3 years ago  | 8 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)
