How do Ukrainians receive USD?

by @nealbozeman 8yr  | 7 comments

Iโ€™m finding it harder and harder to work with my friend from the Ukraine, to transfer money from the US, in USD to USD (he has an account that allows dollars).

  • I used to work with Western Union, which was a hefty fee around $60. They closed the account years ago on concerns I was operating a business (I am)
  • I opened an HSBC account to be able to wire internationally, with a $45 per wire fee, but they have stopped allowing transfers
  • Ria Money Transfer was great, but they stopped this week doing deposits in to UA

Arrgh! If a Ukrainian is on a freelancing site like UpWork, how do they get money from their accounts, especially US clients? It must be incredibly expensive by now?

From the bitcoin side, here are ways to cash into/out of bitcoin for Ukrainians:

BTC to Local Currency:
https://btcu.biz
http://kuna.io/

USD to BTC:
https://bitwage.com

Cool thing to note about bitwage, it can be used with upwork! Also, your friend in Ukraine can look into using https://uphold.com to hold his money in USD, withdraw later in BTC.

Payoneer is the best solution. Not really easy to get usd though. But you can get it via local bank, but fees are really crazy - around 10%. Personally i use Payoneer, but i usually stay abroad, so its not really an issue for me

I agree with the bitcoin suggestion - this is one of the huge advantages of a distributed cryptocurrency!

Why canโ€™t your friend open an account somewhere abroad in Europe to receive money from you with wire transfer?

Hi! Iโ€™m from Ukraine though I work through a mediator that receives money for me.
However, payoneer and transferwise are the most common options for freelancers in Ukraine afaik.

They are not completely legal though because Ukraine forces a complicated set of rules thatโ€™s called a โ€˜foreign entrepreneurshipโ€™ and is the only legal way to get US$ there. Still, a few people are bothered by that and use payoneer or transferwise. We hope for paypal in the nearest future and there was some progress lately but no dates were named yet.

There are also options when a person in Ukraine gets a bank account in another country or opens an off-shore company say in Estonia to get money, but they are usually less common. To sum it up, payoneer and transferwise should be fine on initial stages.

I was thinking transferwise too, but they normally only support sending money to a country in the countryโ€™s currency (eg their โ€œto USDโ€ page says to USA only, to EUR is eurozone only)

OP: As a last resort, how about bitcoin? I donโ€™t know quite how big the cost of converting currency to bitcoin and back is, though.

How about Payoneer? I donโ€™t know if it works in UA but he could give it a shot.
I receive payments to Argentina from my US clients via ACH transfer, paying 1% commission

How about Transferwise? Did you try that?

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Best EU banks for Ukrainians?

by @anatoliykmetyuk 6yr 6 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi everyone!

I have recently opened a company in Estonia, and now looking for a bank to open a private account to receive salary to. Thing is, I am a Ukrainian citizen, and the fees are huge when making payments from my Estonian company bank account to the Ukrainian private account. For EU transfers, there are no fees. Also I do not feel my money are safe in Ukraine.

So currently I am looking for a bank in EU to open a private account with.

My priority is to have the costs associated with the account as low as possible. E.g. Iโ€™m fine with paying โ‚ฌ200-300 to open the account, but it is a no-go for me if they require a monthly maintenance fee of โ‚ฌ20-30. Which many of them do for foreigners. Also if they need an initial deposit or minimal remainder on the account of โ‚ฌ1000+, this would be a strain for me. Another priority of course is nomad-friendliness: if I decide to withdraw the money outside the EU in a non-EU currency, I should not pay more than 5% in fees. And internet banking and customer support is also of importance, as I believe frequent visits to the bankโ€™s country would be inconvenient for me as a non-resident.

So far I have looked at Swedbank, Rietumu and BlueOrange, all from Latvia. So far I had a great experience with Estonian corporate banking, so another Baltic country seemed like a good option to me. However, all of these banks have high maintenance fees for non-EU residents, from โ‚ฌ20 to โ‚ฌ50 per month. Also OrangeBlue has a minimal balance requirement of โ‚ฌ1000.

All in all, I am very unexperienced in the matter of banking and am a bit in a loss. Can anybody kindly advise me on the โ€œbig pictureโ€ of banking in EU from the non-EU clientโ€™s perspective?
