How do you handle the constant switching of dentists?

How do you handle the constant switching of dentists?

Any thoughts on how to deal with continuity when switching dentists all the time? Dentist #1 says โ€œweโ€™ll keep an eye on #12 and #14โ€, but then you go to Dentist #2 and they donโ€™t have the records (nor do I understand all the gibberish being spoken by the dentist). Do you keep your records and take them with you?

Also, what about x-rays. Some dentists want to take some for each โ€œnew patientโ€. Seems like having x-rays all the time canโ€™t be good. Do you ask for copies or what? Iโ€™ve been dentist hopping for about 18 months now and am beginning to wonder how to keep my 54-year-old teeth in the best shape.

Any advice from those doing this long term?

Usually the previous dentists who have seen me keep my dental records and they would be happy to endorse it to the next one. This is rare when I lived in Thailand for 5 years and had Thantakit Dental in Bangkok take care of me. Never had any problems with my x-rays and other tests for the dental implant, crown replacement and other treatments Iโ€™ve availed them. Very accommodating and professional. Communication among the dentists and their concern really make things straightforward. Otherwise, having a copy of your own will surely help.

I mentioned my plans to my last dentist (who thought it was amazing) and immediately offered to just let their office know and theyโ€™d be happy to email my records to the next dentist.

We had this issue with orthodontist work (braces) and there seemed to be no solution. Even in-country no other ortho was willing to take on the work of another. Dental is different - but a new dentist will likely want their own X-rays. Still, get your full dental records along with X-rays โ€ฆ Most should be able to do this digitally now. Let them know ahead of time that youโ€™ll be requesting this as well.

For a custom work like braces Iโ€™m sure they will be taking a lot of X-rays as youโ€™re changing the structure of the jaw/teeth, for regular check-ups/fixes donโ€™t think that is so important. Watched the TED-Ed video recently about radiation and it looks like you would need about 1200 X-Rays annually for it to become a problem.

I would just ask for the records (at least to make a photo copy).

Otherwise, changed a few dentists and they never really was interested in taking x-rays (might depend on the country) if there is no real need.

As for having x-rays wouldnโ€™t be that concerned. Iโ€™m not a doctor but from talking with my doctor friends itโ€™s nothing to be concerned about (especially as they take x-rays whenever they are bored).

Iโ€™d explain the situation upfront and tell the dentist you need your records. Often the new dentist will want to take their own x-rays because things change.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Driving from Italy to Croatia..how to handle passport?

in Croatia by @ld 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello, we are US citizens that have been able to stay in Italy past our standard visa stay due to covid. Now we must leave. We want to drive to Croatia as our โ€œout of EUโ€ stay. But Iโ€™m now wondering what considerations I need to take care of for my visa. I wonโ€™t go through an airport and get my passport stamped. But I assume I need to get my passport stamped as a way to prove Iโ€™m out of the EU.

Anyone else travel in and out of Schengen zone via car? Or know what I should do to properly handle the visa situation? I get unclear answers online. Hmm.

Appreciate your help!

What are wise ways to handle health insurance, as a USA person

by @azurio 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi! Iโ€™m still struggling to figure out how to handle health insurance.

What handy guides have you found to help figure out USA health care?

Iโ€™m struggling with:

  • When itโ€™s okay/wise to go without coverage while abroad, these days.
  • What other type of insurance I want while traveling, and whether it needs to be a supplement to USA insurance or if it can be a replacement.
  • Etc.

Above all, I think I want out. I wonder about success stories in moving to some other system/location, and the method youโ€™d recommend: additional citizenship, a special visa, etc.

I have searched this topic and struggled with it, so summaries and clarity are super helpful. I appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks so much!

Any nomads who practice Krav Maga in spite of constantly changing locations?

by @petar_np 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

When I think about nomadic life style I often think of one disadvantage, not being able to continue to practice Krav Maga as I do now. How do you keep up with training and progress if you are constantly moving?

How do I handle the PayPal limit lift?

by @matthieudrula 8yr 8 years ago  | 15 comments

Hi,
I have been using Paypal since Iโ€™m nomading and contracting. However now it asks to confirm my identity.
I created my account when I was in the UK, now slow traveling, my account is bound to the UK and Iโ€™m feel like Iโ€™m *****ed since they ask for information about my previous UK address.
They are talking about limit lifts. Anyone using paypal has a nomad with no home address?

How to handle problems with US Address Verification

by @simplgy 8yr 8 years ago  | 10 comments

Iโ€™ve been a Traveling Mailbox member for about a year. My last yearโ€™s tax return, all financial institutions, vehicle registration, and driverโ€™s license all reflect this address.

It looks like an apartment address: 75 N Woodward Ave #####, Tallahassee FL.

In the last few weeks, Iโ€™ve been having problems.

  1. I requested a voter registration renewal in Florida and it was denied on the grounds that I am using a business address
  2. My bank (Ally) contacted me, saying that my address was a โ€œmaildropโ€ location, and needed to be a physical domicile.

My theory is that this Traveling Mailbox location has been flagged as a maildrop in whatever database these agencies use and will continue to be a problem, so Iโ€™m looking for a new strategy.

Questions:

  • What am I supposed to do? I donโ€™t have or want a permanent home.
  • If these agencies object to my address, will the IRS or the California tax board? (audits? residency challenges?)

Some ideas:

  • Use a โ€œnext of kinโ€ address for legal reasons, and traveling mailbox as a mailing address. My bank allowed this. I think this means I need to declare residency in the state of my next-of-kin, which is not preferred.
  • Find a smaller mail services provider that is less likely to be flagged as a business/maildrop location (They may be flagged later and Iโ€™ll have to change addresses. Iโ€™ll miss the digital scanned mail feature. Also, is any mail service legal to use as a residence now?)

@nickdanforth, you had this same problem in Apr 2015, any solutions work well for you?

@nomadicme, sounds like youโ€™ve had the same problem, too.

What can we do about this, folks? Seems like as full-time travellers we should be able to pick any state in the US to be our residence, but banning certain types of addresses is really making it difficult.

How do you handle working with clients remotely?

by @ld 9yr 9 years ago  | 16 comments

Hello, everyone!

We are confused at how living in another part of the world from your clients will work. We are from the USA, do software/dev stuff, and having almost daily client calls (or with whom youโ€™re contracting) at like 10pm if we were, say, in Italy doesnโ€™t seem like a very ideal lifestyle. But sourcing clients or contracting from another part of the world will most likely pay less.

If your career is client or contracting based - how do you handle this? Do you just handle your calls at midnight? Pay your high home taxes while making less with a foreign income (as we assume would happen to us)? Avoid calls?

Despite all the blogs I read about traveling and how to make it work, it seems this topic is hard to find solid, applicable responses, or answers seem to point to making travel itself your career focus. Start a blog, do our own independent work, diversify our income, etc are all kind of unnecessary when we make good money as is, we just canโ€™t see how to make that work abroad with a different time zone.

We want to remain focused on our careers and slowly travel, but doing this in a smart way seems illusive!

i appreciate your input!
