How do you use Facebook and Twitter in China? Due to the firewall blocking them?

in China by @leona 9yr  | 4 comments

Morning guys!
I just landed in Beijing few days ago and a bit freak with my gmail and social media channels, apparently the Google product is blocked (I didnโ€™t know it forehead) so does others- Facebook, Twitter or other product.
My friend told me to use Zenmate but again, I couldnโ€™t enter it.
By now while Iโ€™m typing I have tried all sorts of solutions which others recommended to me and so far, it doesnโ€™t workโ€ฆ :(โ€ฆ
I hope you guys could help me with some tips and tricksโ€ฆ
Thanks a lot!!!

Hi Leona,

When I lived in Beijing I used WiTopia. It was pretty good and they have a 30 days money back policy. So you can subscribe and cancel if you are staying for a short period. Astrill was an alternative and quite popular among the expat community in Beijing. Honestly, I was the only one using WiTopia among my friends there.

PS: you can also drop fb and twitter and use their version renren and weibo heheheheh

Hi Leona,

If you need to use the Internet extensively in China, especially for getting work done, then the best solution would be getting a reliable paid VPN account. I use VPN every day in China and a lot of people I know do the same thing. The price would be around $10 per month, but in my opinion itโ€™s definitely worth it (Just think about how much time you would waste on struggling with the Internet otherwise).

Please note that although thereโ€™re a number of VPN providers to choose from, not all of them work well in China. Some of them are completely blocked as well. To find out which VPNs work well in China, Iโ€™d recommend this website:

https://www.vpndada.com

Itโ€™s a VPN testing site based in China. They test VPN from China and recommend reliable ones to be used in China. Hereโ€™s a list of VPNs recommended by VPNDada:

A rather good forum site for foreigners in China
http://raoulschinasaloon.com/
The admins are a bit cautious in weird ways. Auto text replacement gets rid of various phrases that might be searched for or might provoke the Great Firewall. Any mention of โ€œVPNโ€ or โ€œvirtual private networkโ€ becomes โ€œvery passable nicetyโ€. Search for that to find the posts relevant to your problem

You have to use a VPN, which unfortunately, is very hard to download once you are already on the ground in China.

I recommend VyprVPN from about 6 months of personal experience. You canโ€™t access their main website from China, but you can access https://www.goldenfrog.biz to download the installer.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Co-working space in Shanghai WITHOUT monthly payment

in Shanghai , China by @katrin 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

Daily/hourly pass needed.
Canโ€™t work in normal cafรฉ because having clientโ€™s laptop for security reasons, canโ€™t use open networks. Working for R&D. Also laptop is so huge it doesnโ€™t fit normal cafe environment because itโ€™s far from discreet.

Where can you do cheap laundry in Shanghai?

in Shanghai , China by @levelsio 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

My hotel is charging like 500RMB ($7USD) for a t-shirt, haha. So I need to find a cheap laundry place a la Thailand, here in Shanghai. Iโ€™m in the Jingโ€™an area. Anyone knows?

Anyone Else in China?

in China by @nathanthomas 8yr 8 years ago  | 12 comments

Hi Team,

Iโ€™m totally new here so forgive me if Iโ€™ve made some horrible faux pas by asking a question so soon

Iโ€™m a kiwi but have been a digital nomad for over three years now, and have spent the last year or so in China, currently in Shanghai.

Are there many other digital nomads in this part of the world? Most of the international friends Iโ€™ve made locally are students or corpo expats, Iโ€™ve not come across that many entrepreneurial / nomadic types here - the visa and internet issues certainly make this understandable, though the country very much rewards long term travel.

Would be curious to see if there are many other like minded folk here?

Cheers,
Nathan

Has anyone convinced a SO to begin traveling with them?

by @dhamm 8yr 8 years ago  | 5 comments

I have a girlfriend who is considering traveling with me and was trying to figure out what she could do that is also remote to contribute. Iโ€™m wondering if anyone here has had the same experience or just some ideas about what a SO with no technical skills could do to work remotely?

BED BUGS. How the hell do you get rid of them?

by @thom801 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Hey yโ€™all. My girlfriend and I are in Austria and we have bed bugs. We stayed at a hostel and when they moved us to a new room it was crawling with them and my girlfriend got bit about 60 times. We tried our best to nuke our stuff in a dryer and get rid of them but seems like we still have them. Does not bother me but my gf is super allergic and it is destroying her.

From all the research I have done the best solution is a product called Diatomaceous Earth (DE) which is a powder that contains tiny sharp crystals which compromise the exoskeleton of insects and kills them very effectively and is non toxic. From all reviews I have read, this is the ultimate tool against bed bugs. I am trying right now to buy some but it is pretty hard to get some ordered quickly.

Link to a DE product in Europe: http://www.diatomretail.co.uk/collections/diatompest

Wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and what types of things can be done to treat it and avoid being infested in the future. Thank you!
