Is studying dev while traveling a good idea?

by @sanelo 9yr  | 21 comments

Many people here live and work while traveling. I want to do it while studying web development full time, and then eventually making a career & lifestyle out of it.

First stop: Sarajevo, Bosnia. Second stop: Split, Croatia. If cost numbers are correct on Nomadlist, my budget for this project should allow for at least 6-8 months income free.

Itโ€™s not an easy decision. I make a comfortable salary now and am willing to risk it all to study hard, travel, be inspired and follow my passion. Iโ€™m young, full of energy, and have no huge responsibilities (family, etc) at the moment. If not risk it now, when?

What do you guys think?

Theres a LOT of distraction and things to figure out while you travel. Ideally its best to finish studying before you start travelling or as a half way pt, go to just one place cheap and focus.
If you are trying to do both, chances are you wont enjoy the travel and you wont really focus enough to study.

This is a good post about how much time they wasted just solving the local countryโ€™s problems i.e. housing before even working on their business How do we solve housing for digital nomads? . I went through a horrible version of this in Toronto at my first startup run.

Iโ€™m considering the same thing though, but travelling for the purposes of lower my costs so I can go through a dev learning curve without worrying about cost.

@sanelo, wow Iโ€™m not sure I know where to begin, but iโ€™ll try;

I first started playing around with basic HTML, CSS and Javascript about 12 years ago, making websites for bands etc. Then it was mostly books like the Sams โ€˜Teach Yourself in 24hrsโ€™ series. I was also a student then so had loads of time on my hands!!

Later I started to realise I needed some kind of server side language & database to drive the content on the sites I was building so again, with a book started learning ASP/SQL. I found that very hard and then someone else recommended PHP/MySQL which clicked with me and then for a number of years it was just further books, probably some online guides and a lot of terrible procedural code!!

It was only when I started to try and get a dev job that certain really important things started becoming apparent like frameworks, MVC, version control etc. That all lead me onto looking into Ruby On Rails as I didnโ€™t get on with any of the PHP frameworks. Since then iโ€™ve not really looked back. Thereโ€™s a load of great resources out there for Rails like Railscasts which sadly isnโ€™t updated anymore but Code School and Code Academy have some great interactive video guides too. Ruby Monk is also great for getting up to speed with the Ruby language. Iโ€™m sure thereโ€™s others for Python/Django and other languages and frameworks.

I donโ€™t know what level youโ€™re at but in terms of tips for any beginner, iโ€™d go for:

  • Get a decent text editor like Sublime or Textmate. Avoid Dreamweaver etc!

  • Start with client side basics; Be confident you can hand code some HTML in a basic text editor like notepad. The add some basic CSS and only then start adding some Javascript/JQuery.

  • Move on to exploring server side technologies and languages. Start simple maybe with PHP/MySQL. Iโ€™m biased, but once you get how it works, ditch PHP for Ruby (on Rails)

  • Start using a framework. Rails getโ€™s my vote here. When you do the famous 15 mins to build a blog youโ€™ll be blown away.

  • Use version control. Git is my preference. Understand and use branching. Youโ€™ll wonder how you managed without it.

  • Take a look at the syllabuses of bootcamp course like General Assemblyโ€™s and if youโ€™re not going to enrol, use it to further guide path youโ€™ll follow when self learning.

  • Try and be versatile; with that I mean donโ€™t limit yourself to client side. I think an understanding of both makes you a better dev. You donโ€™t have to be a jack of all trades, but itโ€™ll make life easier in the long run.

  • Try and choose a stack and stick to it. This is quite hard when thereโ€™s so much to choose from. I tend to use google trends to look at the rise/fall in popularity of languages and also the job market. I have to be honest and say part of my decision to go down the Rails route is because it generally pays better than PHP.

Hope that helps?

@raoot1979 9yr

Hell no, iโ€™d say use both as they complement each other; JS frontend, RoR backend. You could of course use Node JS to handle your server side, but thatโ€™s not something I know a lot about.

Iโ€™m actually moving away from one massive RoR app handling everything for me. I tend to use a stripped down version of it to build APIs / micro-services and then most recently AngularJS for frontend UIs.

@timnomad picking up quality work can be tricky and like @wanderingdev sayโ€™s it is all about networking and the cliche of โ€˜itโ€™s not what you know but who you knowโ€™.

Iโ€™m a full time web dev with about 4 years full time experience. At the moment, Iโ€™m working full time for a company in London. Iโ€™m self taught, have no degree but have done pretty well by specialising in one industry and thatโ€™s the industry I have worked in most of my life, before moving into dev work.

I would say that taking a kind of scattergun approach and taking on everything an anything would be a bad move. Try and specialise in what you know and equally as important try and specialise in a skill and try and make that a skill that is in demand. For example, Iโ€™ve 17+ years experience in the music industry from retail to distribution to running labels and now I specialise in providing big data solutions that are in line with the way the industry has moved; near real-time analytics for streaming data, social data etc etc. I think what iโ€™m getting at, is donโ€™t just think websites, with cloud computing you can do so much more.

That said, I have seen other nomads taking on small projects like websites for hotels/guesthouses in exchange for a room and food. Sounds like a great way to get some experience on a low to no budget!

As far as learning goes, I would 100% advocate collaborative learning. Personally, Iโ€™m much more inclined to dive in and code without reading docs or following guides and rarely learn much that way. I do learn a lot however from the other devs I work with and likewise, kind of crystallise my own ideas when explaining things to others. I guess a bootcamp could work that way, but my worry would be that if there are fundamentals that you just donโ€™t get, you could come away confused. Iโ€™ve never done one so hard say.

Iโ€™m leaving London in Sept for Myanmar and will be based there for a year, doing some work remotely. I fully intend to reach out to tech start up community there to be amongst other devs and hopefully keep my skills fresh and share a few things. Give me a shout if anyone is out that way.

I have had a fair amount of success learning on my own, but my issue often deals with being too drained after a long day at work. I managed to get more studying done over the weekend when I wasnโ€™t as drained, so the idea is that more time and energy should be of benefit.

Ok, my question was more along the lines of โ€œif I learn to code for 6 months including going through FreeCodeCamp.com and put together a good portfolio will I be able to earn a living as a DN freelancerโ€.

Is it realistic that i can compete with the cheap labor and the experienced labor to find enough work to get $2000 to live off.

Surely not 100% of DNโ€™s who can code are successful.

If you have the skills and the ability to get jobs then yes, you can live off of it. Relying on freelance websites isnโ€™t the best option though as, like you said, youโ€™ll be competing with $6/hour coders. But those arenโ€™t the jobs you want anyway.

@sanelo: have you been working while travelling before?

I canโ€™t agree more on this. A good schedule and figuring out the pace you want to move at (like, location-wise) is very important otherwise you easily drop out and focus on the funnier travelling part.

One thing @wanderingdev said, Iโ€™d like to highlight and elaborate because I feel it is highly underrated by learning devs, is not having much of a support system:

Iโ€™m a self-taught developer and one of the co-founders of OpenTechSchool and [Hackership][2]. In both we address one major problem, when learning to code: youโ€™ll get stuck. And that is highly frustrating. Heck, this even happens to me after ten years in the biz, that when I have to learn a new thing, especially if they are out of your comfort zone or edgy tech, I do get stuck. And the easily procrastinate on other things, wasting days. With the fun and thrill of travelling in the mix, I can see this easily expand to weeks even.

With the 9-weeks Hackership code learning retreat, we organisers make sure to create a supportive and motivating environment and with the coaches around we resolve being stuck in a matter of hours rather than days.

FYI, we still have a few seats open for the coming Batch on the beaches of Costa Rica in September, if anyone is interested.

Disclaimer: I am a volunteer organiser and coach with Hackership.

Learning and studying on free time is always a good idea, but mostly if you are good at keeping your habits and having some specific amount of compromise with yourself, otherwise you might end up procrastinating for months and even years some skills.

Iโ€™d recommend you to start right away before traveling and start to see what type of materials and courses are the most apt to you, as well as to measure your times of the day so youโ€™re aware of how to organize yourself.
In my case, basically what I did is to mimic my school night schedule so I can kind of follow a pattern of study I was related already. Traveling is a little harder, but not impossible at all.

Hereโ€™s some interesting mini course that might help you out as well to get started, called "Learning how to Learn"

If youโ€™re good at self regulating your study time, learning online and not having much of a support system when you have questions, it can work. Personally, I donโ€™t learn well that way. I tried to learn to code online for over a year before I said fuck it and did a 3 month bootcamp. Learned more in the first week than in the whole year of trying on my own.

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack 4yr 4 years ago  | 38 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

Best way to create a company as web dev freelancer to work with French companies

by @faby 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m French and Iโ€™m leaving Paris and my current full time job. In a few month, Iโ€™ll move to Bali to be a fresh digital nomad in web development. I learn about the different possibilities to create my own business and I would have feedbacks. whatโ€™s the best ? Iโ€™ve an opportunity to work with my actual french company as a freelancer, remotly, on specific missions.
But I donโ€™t know If I have to create my company in France to continue working with them or maybe one in Singapour like with sleek.sg. I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s it easy to work with a french company with a singapore company. I then plan to find other missions with fewer time differences, (Australia โ€ฆ)

If someone could help me  thanks!

Getting a Russian Visa while traveling

in Russia by @shaulsolomon 6yr 6 years ago  | 1 comment

I am an English/American currently in Israel, and heading in a week to Georgia/Armenia for two weeks and then want to head to Russia for a week.
As I am only in Israel for another week, would it be possible to apply for the visa in Israel and ask to receive it in Armenia (my last stop before I want to go to Russia)?
Or perhaps there is another better option that I have available?

What kind of work do digital nomad web developers do?

by @cryberg 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hi everyone! Iโ€™m thinking of making the jump from being an office-bound web developer to freelancing instead. I was hoping to talk to some of you who do freelance web dev while living a nomadic lifestyle.

Iโ€™m at a bit of a loss, because when Iโ€™ve tried looking for posts about this kind of lifestyle, the majority of what Iโ€™ve found is for web designers or Wordpress developers, which are both pretty different from being a developer who likes to work with React or whatever other framework.

So for those of you who are living my dream right now:
Are you usually building Wordpress sites, or more often using a framework like React or Ruby on Rails? Or something else entirely?

What types of contracts do you take on? Ecommerce? Building blogs?
Are they on-going, or one-off projects?

How do you get clients while on the road? Is it mostly Upwork or word of mouth?

I have a ton of questions, and would greatly appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thank you!

Do I need vaccinations for traveling in Asia?

by @fredrivett 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

Iโ€™ve been looking to travel for a few years now, and Iโ€™m finally at the point where Iโ€™m pretty much ready to get going, hopefully next month.

That said, Iโ€™ve not planned ahead well, and it only just occurred to me about vaccinations. Iโ€™ve done a bit of research and there are vaccinations available, but Iโ€™m unsure how necessary they are.

I plan to chat to my local nurse/doctor before going, but Iโ€™m also interested to hear whether most people do vaccinate at all before heading out or not?

In terms of specifics, Iโ€™m planning to fly to Japan and then move south, likely hitting up Thailand, Bali, Vietnam etc.

Not expecting any official health advice here, more just personal experience. Any thoughts appreciated :+1:

Anyone (almost) exclusively traveling in Latin America?

Is there anyone around who spends most of their time in Latin America? After short trips to Peru earlier this year, Iโ€™ve now come back to Lima to stay for another three months and will then head to Buenos Aires. Lima will be kind of my home base but I aim to explore as much as possible of Latin America in the next couple of years. Is a 4G sim device in addition to phone advisable in SE Asia?

Iโ€™m planning a visit to Chiang Mai and Bali starting in April. I have a Google Nexus which has worked flawlessly in Mexico at least. Assuming it will work just as well in CM and Bali? If I decide not to work in a coworking space, but rather Airbnb w/wifi and/or Coffee shops wifi, would a dedicated 4g sim card device be worth spening $75 USD to purchase, plus local sim, plus potential SIM hassle, or just rely on Nexus hotspot + airbnb and coffee shop Wifi?

What do you do about cooking whilst traveling?

by @kathrynoh 7yr 7 years ago  | 26 comments

This is something Iโ€™ve not really seen addressed anywhere much but, when you are staying somewhere medium term, say 1-6 months, what you do about cooking? I figure anything shorter than that and you can make do, while over 6 months you arenโ€™t going to mind stocking a kitchen so much. But, for that medium term period, it feels like a waste to spend too much on pantry supplies and equipment but too long to get by on basics.

Anyway, Iโ€™d love to know what other people in regards to cooking. Do you eat out for all your meals, have a few โ€˜go toโ€™ dishes that you can cook anywhere with minimal equipment (mine would be omelettes) or do you adjust to the local cuisine?

As a woman and/or minority, are there any places you would not recommend traveling to?

by @gigigriffis 7yr 7 years ago  | 29 comments

Hi all!

So, Iโ€™m in Colombia at the moment and have experienced some really intense harassment and even violence here. I was shocked because itโ€™s been recommended to me by so many people, and so I thought perhaps it would be useful to start a thread here where we (we being women and other minorities) can talk about places where we recommend either not traveling or being particularly on guard.

So, are there any places youโ€™ve been where youโ€™ve experienced more violence, harassment, or maltreatment? Are there any places that you recommend other women/LGBT/ethnic minorities be particularly careful or not travel to?

I donโ€™t want this to become a super negative thing or a personal preference thing, but I am hoping to get some insight into areas that might be more concerning and/or unsafe for certain groups so that we can all make informed decisions about where we want to spend our time. I really wish someone would have been frank with me about the issues here in Colombia, so Iโ€™m hoping we can be frank with each other about places where we havenโ€™t felt 100% safe.

So, Iโ€™ll start:

Iโ€™ve had little to no problems in other parts of South and Central America, but here in Colombia I have witnessed not only street harassment, but also actual violence and malice and, worse, have seen people who could do something to stop it shrugging it off and saying โ€œitโ€™s normal here.โ€ I would not recommend it for women and particularly women traveling alone.

Similarly, in Morocco I felt very uncomfortable as a female traveler. There wasnโ€™t as much yelling or in-your-face harassment, but there was a ton of staring, men invading my space (standing over me in a bus and staring down at me from less than a foot away, for example), and men treating me like a second-class citizen (refusing to let me pass them on the sidewalk and instead forcing me to go around them into a busy street). I was traveling with a friend and we were both pretty exhausted by the end of the trip.

How to insure my belongings when traveling in SE Asia & South America?

by @adrienbetweets 8yr 8 years ago  | 9 comments

I want an insurance that covers my belongings only.
I already have a international travel health insurance, hence I do not need some link or recommendation to do-it-all packages (i.e. insurance for health + rescue + belongings).

I came across this threads:

But they did not help me because:

  • I do not live in the UK, nor am I a UK citizen
  • My credit card does NOT cover my belongings, nor does any of the insurances I already have

Ideally, Iโ€™d like to find an insurance that can insure my belongings regardless of my nationality & residence. Any link to information of quality is welcome.

Ko Samui, Ko Lanta, Goa or Chennai. Which one to start developing apps?

in Ko Samui , Thailand by @lordcyberspacer 8yr 8 years ago  | 10 comments

Hi nomads!

Iโ€™m intending to become a proper digital nomad in January at the latest, and I am just starting to take some initial steps. I am a software developer and I intend to create an app and build a startup. Which one of these places would be best for that?

  • Ko Samui (Thailand)
  • Ko Lanta (Thailand)
  • Goa (India)
  • Chennai (India)

My idea is to develop my business in any of those places and open it here in Australia later on. Obviously, one of the main reasons why I have picked those places is that they are very affordable so that I can make the most of my savings from my current contract  Goa would probably be my favourite pick since is quieter and not as crowded as Chennai (I think), plus living costs are about half of what they are in Ko Samui and Ko Lanta.

However, due to the nature of my business plan, Internet is a must. I have read your article about Goa and you said that Internet access is pretty bad, however I noticed that you wrote that a year ago and I also heard that this is currently changing. Whatโ€™s the situation right now?

Cheers!

Are there digital nomads traveling by car?

by @patrick 8yr 8 years ago  | 10 comments

My initial plan was/is to travel by car from my hometown (Groningen, The Netherlands) to South East Asia. This will be the best trip based on cultures, landscapes and achievement.
The downside is all the visas you need for the countries in the middle of this trip. The hassle and the costs.

The alternative, what is in a name, is to start in Costa Rica. Hitting North America with a counter clockwise round. And then the same for South America.

Till now a dream trip, but I cannot get them out of my head.
For my I rest my hunger by living in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia for half a year.

But still looking t all the option for make this happen, eventually.
So, any Digital Nomads traveling and living form their car here?

Have you ever been called to U.S. jury duty while traveling?

by @krompson 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

My husband and I have residency in the state of Tennessee in the USA and my in-laws collect our mail for us there. We only pass through Tennessee about once a year.

Does anyone know what happens if weโ€™re called to jury duty? Is traveling a legit excuse to get out of it?

Who is a solo-traveling digital nomad, who's traveling in a group or as a nomad family?

It feels that being a digital nomad / remote worker also means a lot to be a solo-traveler. Iโ€™d like to see how much this is the case here โ€” out of curiosity. And whether there are actually groups or families traveling in the (digital) nomad lifestyle.

How are you earning a living while traveling?

Iโ€™ve been traveling for over a year, and Iโ€™ve been working on 3 month contracts in locations abroad to sustain travel. I wanted to see what the community was like as far as digital nomads go. Are you trading your skills for $$$? and if so, how are you doing it?

(Iโ€™ve also wanted to try this, but havenโ€™t been to successful.)
