Is there a resource for finding out how 24/7 friendly places are?

by @50574e 9yr  | 5 comments

A year ago I spent 4 months traveling through SE Asia and Iโ€™m planning on becoming a nomad as soon as possible (Iโ€™m finishing my B.Sc. so Iโ€™m pretty glued to one place at the moment but at least I get to do a year long exchange program).

However some places in Asia basically have a curfew (Iโ€™m looking at you Hanoi) while others have round the clock food delivery. This is a huge factor for me when choosing where to stay for longer periods of time since I am very(!) nocturnal and will probably be working with people in other timezones.

So my question is where can I filter cities by amount of sleep? (as in โ€˜the city that never sleepsโ€™ ^^)

Maybe this should be one of the things this site rates? (Iโ€™m probably not the only one who considers this an important issue)

This is vital, esp if you have phone calls with people in diff time zones. If the coworking facility you are at shuts down, thats no fun

Awesome tip! Iโ€™ve added many 24/7 coffee shops to Nomad List, e.g. here: https://nomadlist.com/chiang-mai-thailand, usually though it helps to just Google 24/7 coffee place $cityName

How do you ensure that you have good WiFi for working whilst travelling e.g. in places like India?

in India by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?

Which places in South East Asia are suitable for kids?

by @nomad4 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everybody,

weโ€™re a family of 4 from Canada (Quebec province) leaving to Thailand on December 1st.
Our plan is to take things slowly and live in a peaceful environment while working a little and doing homeschooling to our 6-year-old son (plus escaping Canadian-cold winter )

This is roughly what our plan would look like:

  • arriving in Bangkok, staying there for about a week (air bnb probably)
  • moving to Chiang Mai then Krabi (most likely Ao Nang, Ao Tha Lane, Railay) or Koh Pha Ngan (North part) or Koh Chang (2-3 months)
  • then Indonesia (Bali/Gili islands) (1,5 months)
  • And Malaysia (Batu Ferengi, Penang) to finish (1 month)

Weโ€™re not city dwellers, and love being surrounded by nature.
Knowing that, what would be the best places for a family who want something quiet, walkable and with reliable Internet service?

Thanks!

Places in Central or South America with a beach for remote working

by @mcdime 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Im looking to make my first venture into nomad living this September and keep leaning back towards Bocas del Toro.

Does anyone have experience setting up shop there? Iโ€™m open to other warm weather surf towns as well

Starting a SaaS company that assists the operation of service based industries so being near some other SaaS people would be wonderful. (First time starting a tech company)

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Which coworking spaces are open 24/7?

by @yako 6yr 6 years ago  | 13 comments

Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere around the world? Sometimes because of my line of work I need to be awake when everyone is sleeping on the country I am in (but I know I am not the only one!). It would be amazing to share that time at a coworking space with others who like to work at night or who have to be awake. Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere in the world?

Hey everyone,
We are nomad couple looking for some house we can stay for year or more.
Are there any known good places, like new villages with modern houses or something like this that we can check? Or any place you can recommend to look for a good (for European) house for rent?
Thx in advance for your help!

What are some good resources for professional prospective Mexican Nomads to do freelance translations and copyediting in Spanish in the United States and Canada?

in Canada by @nightchimp 7yr 7 years ago  | 2 comments

I have a friend who is a UNAM graduate in Philology (I know, wow, a Renaissance Woman), who has been creating textual translations between Spanish, English and sometimes Russian for writers, poets and journalists in Mexico City. She is very good at what she does, and has a client base, and just recently gained a client in the US. I want her to be able to take advantage of digital means to reach potential clients in the US and Canada, especially in regions where there are not a lot of Spanish speakers already present and active in this work locally. What are some good resources to find these sorts of opportunities? Yes, weโ€™ve beaten the proverbial bush to find Indeed listings, Craigslist (so sad what has happened to CL lately), and LinkedIn, as well as Upwork.com and Freelancer.com. We found mostly bupkiss. Any tips/hints/admonitions? Thanks in advance!

Worried about English fluency when finding a job in Ireland?

in Ireland by @gonzalezveroni94 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi Nomads!

Iโ€™m Veronica, a spanish graduate of computer science. I moved to Dublin to get a job and I have an interview next week. I have a good fluency for now but I am worried I will not be able to speak to my co-workers about specific topics because I am not a native speaker. I can talk about general things but I worry my english is not good enough to talk about what I am trained in.

Does anyone else face this problem when moving to new countries? If so, how did you overcome this? Thanks!!

What are some good Spanish language learning resources?

by @anon82020850 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey all,

I am planning to move over to South America next year, and in preparation I want to start learning Spanish.

I have started working with Duolingo, but would love to hear some advice from others in the community as to resources (apps, podcasts etc) that will help with this? Does anyone else have any suggestion as to what worked for you?

I am under no illusion that an app or podcast will probably not make me speak the language particularly well, but it will at least place me in a better position than if I made no effort to learn the language.

Once I am between native speakers and have more opportunity to practice I am sure I will improve a lot, but for now I am looking into getting a bit of a jumpstart.

Thanks

Finding a place in London for a month on the east side?

in London , United Kingdom by @autumnflame 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

Iโ€™m planning to stay in London for about a month in August-September, to coincide with an industry workshop thatโ€™s happening there at the beginning of September, and would really love to find a spot in or near the Brick Lane/Whitechapel/Bethnal Green area. AirBnB seems pricy, but Iโ€™m unsure of how easy it is to get a place via SpareRoom.

Factors/Questions

  • Budget: hoping to stay under ยฃ700, willing to go up to ยฃ800 for a perfect place right near Brick Lane
  • Looking for a furnished private room in a flatshare; Iโ€™m pretty okay with a closet with a bed, so long as itโ€™s a clean, cozy closet.
  • Solo lady, so nowhere too dodgy. (My tolerance is about โ€œNew York at night in the hipster areasโ€-level. Mexico City in the historical district at night was a bit much for me.)
  • Anyone know how easy it is to get a space in SpareRoom without actually being in the city? Or am I better served getting a hostel for a few days and accommodation-hunting then? I worry about not finding a space if I put it off until Iโ€™m there, as evidenced by my thinking about this six months beforehand. :stuck_out_tongue:
  • On that note, is that a time around when it might be harder to find accommodation, like university term starting or something?
  • Is it easy enough to find a place from mid-month to mid-month, or is it mostly going to be whole months? (I guess this wouldnโ€™t be as much of a concern if itโ€™s a week-to-week.)
  • Is it easy to get a space without a local bank account? DNing and all. Cash wouldnโ€™t be an issue.
  • How is the cafe-working culture in London? Is free decent wifi and outlets a common thing in coffee shops? Iโ€™m not super-thrilled with the idea of coworking spaces; the prices feel a bit high for me, and I actually kinda like working with a bustle around me, so long as thereโ€™s power and internet. Iโ€™ll probably look into it if it turns out there arenโ€™t really a lot of cafes equipped to do that sort of thing though.
  • โ€ฆ are there any questions I should be asking or issues I should be considering?

I realize itโ€™s a lot of questions, but anything helps! Thanks!

What are good places near Cancun?

in Cancun , Mexico by @jjuter 7yr 7 years ago  | 4 comments

Is there a place close to Cancun such as Playa Del Carmen or Talum where I can stay for 1-3 months? Any recommendations? Or is that not a good place for a long term stay?

I love the beach there when I visited there, I thought it would be nice to be able to live by the beach and work for a little while.

Best places for local, organic food and strong internet outside of South East Asia?

by @jmacattak 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Where can I find locally sourced, organic (or at least non-GMO) and also be able to work with strong internet?
I did a search but didnโ€™t find much info. We love Bali and the food here is amazing, we are just looking to try somewhere else out (preferably somewhere in Europe) after a long time in Asia. We also loved the Northern Rivers area in Australia and want to find similar food offerings and compare our options!

Places to stay in bangkok for a few days

by @elirang 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi ,
Im going to be in Bangkok for a few days and iโ€™m searching good places and not expensive price (around 25$ a day max) - iโ€™m thinking on airbnb flat/private room but iโ€™m seeing a lot of hotels/guest houses on this budget.

Do have recommendation on accommodation types/places based on your experience ?

I head that its common in hotels that there is constructions or loud noise from bars โ€ฆ
