Music thread! What do you listen to while working?

by @freedomsurfer 9yr  | 31 comments

Iโ€™ve found that listening to certain types of music actually improve my productivity when I work on my website. When Iโ€™m trading though I require absolute silence.

This is one of my favourite mix:

Do you also listen to music while working?

Focus@Will has been a game changer for me. They offer a variety of music scientifically proven to help different types of people focus. I wish they had a way to download the music instead of stream it b/c sometimes when traveling my internet connection is not ideal - but thatโ€™s my only complaint.

Itโ€™s seasonal for me. Some months Iโ€™m all โ€œmusic all day, all the timeโ€ and other months I enjoy the silence.

Although at home I like to listen to music on the speakers. At work, I have to wear headphones and thatโ€™s a bit more distracting for me, so I donโ€™t do that too much. Exceptions are when the office is too noisy and I have to put my headphones on.

I used to listen to Smooth Jazz during my early professional years and eventually moved on to love Electronic Dance Music (Trance to be specific). It gets me going when I feel like not going.

My favorites are Armin Van Buuren, Arty, Above and Beyond, Aly and Fila, and I canโ€™t name to others. Spotify is awesome. I donโ€™t have any mp3 files in my iPhone because I can just search for any music any time.

This might be strange to some but video game sound tracks are actually very good to listen to while working. The music is designed to provide an ambient background that doesnโ€™t detract from your ability to concentrate on mental tasks. Skyrim is my favorite itโ€™s very soothing and relaxing. But you can find full soundtracks on youtube for almost any game you can think off. Hereโ€™s the link to Skyrim if anyone is interested: https://youtu.be/AWfYt0FAX8g

I see a lot of you mentioning Spotify here. Do you know of the Chinese clone of Spotify? Itโ€™s somewhat like Spotify Premium, but for free. If you sign up with their service for a free account you can also download MP3s in 320 kbit/s. You however donโ€™t need an account to use the service.
It seems to be unsure wether this service is legal or not and the answer to this question depends on your local law.

Nature sounds, mostly birdsong, on Spotify.

I started this mostly to combat working in cafes without noise cancelling headphones, but ow itโ€™s my go to for good concentration and just keeping me chilled.

If Iโ€™m stressed or anxious, itโ€™s amazing. If I need to zone out of the noise around me, works wonders. Iโ€™ll sometimes listen to some bands or BBC Radio 4 with the volume low.

+1 for spotify. I subscribed when I started nomading and swear by it now.

Itโ€™s great to build out playlists of music (my preference for coding at the moment is liquid dnb with minimal or no lyrics) which I usually do by copying someone elseโ€™s and then deleting any songs that I donโ€™t love. Itโ€™s far easier than the mess I used to have of trying to manage collections of mp3โ€™s on unreliable harddrives. Plus whenever Iโ€™m web connected and in the mood for something else itโ€™s easy to find.

The ability to then sync a few playlists on my phone is essential as it allows me to play my music off my phone if Iโ€™m mobile and save on my laptopโ€™s battery life.

A word of warning if youโ€™re using Windows, spotify (and chrome) changes the systemโ€™s clock tick rate which can rapidly drain your battery. Thus when running on battery I always use my phone for music.

A better question for me would be โ€œhow can you NOT listen to music while working?โ€ I simply canโ€™t!
When designing, I listen to a few Indie/soft rock tracks, but when writing (primary), I listen to vocal trance playlists (a big thanks for fellow DN Nikolay for initiating me to the genre). I replay the songs I like from the playlists and put them in my own collection of favorites, which I then in low-inspiration periods. Check it out, you might find it useful https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF3tvJItgskahOP4EwYq_ZRvonejJ36bu

It would be AWESOME to have a place to share and socially-validate our fav productivity/inspiration songs! Vocal Trance works for me because it has a fast tempo synchronic with the heartbeat (uplifting), simple but prominent harmonies, and pleasant melodies with all these dreamy vocals.

As a programmer, I really like to, but it only works when Iโ€™m implementing an already thought-out design, not architecting up a new one.

Current favorites include Tipperโ€™s Fathoms EP, nervous_testpilotโ€™s Frozen Synapse OST, and Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass.

Listening to music can be a great productivity boost for me, but not under all circumstances.

When working with texts and code (eg. writing emails) I prefer to listen to music that doesnโ€™t have any lyrics. When doing design work I listen to all of my music.

Iโ€™ve read that you become more focused by listening to the same song over and over again. For more details read this post

Repeating songs? Definitely! When Iโ€™m late with a deadline (writer) and typing frantically, i tend to do CMD+Tab, CMD+R, CMD+Tab all the time to just replay the last song - 15 times, if need be.

Depending on the type of work I am doing.
Uptempo when GTD and classic when writing.

Definitely. I canโ€™t work without music. I usually go for some focus music, like post-rock or something close to jazz/classical music. If I need some energy, klezmer/balkan music or electro swing.

@freedomsurfer I was thinking of making a post to share our music playlists when we are working, so I think that we can use this one !

I will drop a few ones by the top of my head (or iTunes head) for now.

For inspiration. Letโ€™s say, I am about to write a new piece of code:

Love Song - The Cure
Bring on the Night - The Police
Discotheque - U2 (reflect of working in Ireland for a year)
Iโ€™m hot for you - Milkbar: Deep house lounge (only for deeply funky house lovers)

Ah, also this one
Happy - Pharrel Williams

My 2cents, letโ€™s see what others have to throw in

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Best cafes in Budapest for working?

Hi there, I am planning to work remote from Budapest for about 3 weeks. I typically like to work from Starbucks so I wanted to find out which ones are the largest and better for working.

The ones that I found so far that seem a bit bigger are this ones:

Anyone walking around the world while working?

by @michaltakac 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey guys,

Is there anybody who loves walking that much? Iโ€™m thinking about this for about 3 years now, and since I finished university this year, I could possibly plan for this huge trip and start sometime next year. I have no commitments, no girlfriend, some money saved and pretty strong motivation. I like to travel low cost (couchsurfing, exploring cities by walking, cooking own meals, sleep in a tent if needed).

Small background about me: Iโ€™ve been working 5+ years (and still working) as a software engineer remotely (full-stack, web, mobile, VR), trying to not spend everything and save a little here and there (plus some index funds, mutual funds and holding few cryptocurrencies). Walking is big part of my life since itโ€™s something like meditation, great time for creative thinking, research and solving problems. Usually my daily routine involves 10-20km of walking (some in the morning, some in the evening). So far longest stretch was 55km, aiming to raise it to at least 100km during next month. Also love to track everything (Fitbit Charge 2 + Gyrosco.pe).

Iโ€™m thinking if itโ€™s possible to walk around the world in 5 years while working occasionally during mornings or evenings (own web/mobile app, writing blog) and at the same time complete a PhD in Process Control (got an offer to work with great professor on an interesting thesis using augmented reality, for which I only need a smartphone, my Macbook and ability to once in a while consult with him over phone/skype).

Mentioning your profession or business, location, travel activities or anything related to this will be appreciated.
