Opening a discussion on the idea of buying a really large boat and turning into an office for a startup?

by @swarner 8yr  | 7 comments

Ever heard of people buying an old school bus together and taking a road trip throughout the U.S.? Well itโ€™s kind of like that.

What are the chances of a bunch of freelancers, or a startup, buying a really big boat, and working 100% remotely, while cruising to a different country each year? Kind of like Semester at sea but for a company or group of freelancers!

@wanderingdev makes really good points. Plus youโ€™re forgetting to include a lot of small things that will make a PIA. The good boat will cost a lot and keeping it in good shape will cost just as much. Even if youโ€™re staying in one place sooner or later it will need a new paint job and other maintenance tasks. The fuel costs a lot and it will be another huge expense. The docks might not always be in a good place of town so you will end up working from a boat somewhere far away from the downtown (not including the environment quality). If you stay in one place for a year donโ€™t see a lot of point in the boat (the cool thing about a boat is that you could just tie off the rope and leave), you could just buy a plane ticket each year. Also not sure about the prices for having a place at the docks, but guessing it will end up about the same as renting something in the city. This looks like one of those ideas what sound great in your idea (porn for imagination), but in practice you stay away from it as far as possible (unless you want to make your life miserable).

Yeah, marina space for a boat like this could be hundreds a day for a well located marina.

well, if you have the tens of millions it would cost to buy a boat like that, I suspect you can do anything you want with it.

The problem is, you canโ€™t compare a boat to real estate. In general, real estate goes up or stays neutral in value over the long term. Boats are always a depreciating asset and they require much more in the way of maintenance and upkeep than most buildings.

And if youโ€™re not charging people to be on it, youโ€™d have to carry the hundreds of thousands of dollars of operating costs a year on your own.

Youโ€™re comparing apples to bananas. and certainly with a boat like that, I donโ€™t think itโ€™s a viable nomad option.

Close @wanderingdev ! Only itโ€™s not so much people that come and go like a company retreat, but rather more of solely owned company location, that moves every year. Something like this. After all, I canโ€™t imagine the price Uber or AirBnB has spent on real estate! To buy out a modern high rise in down town Manhattan or San Francisco has to be a lot more than a bit boat. The employees of the startup wouldnโ€™t have to pay to be on the boat, after all, people donโ€™t have to pay to use their employers office building! It could be similar to a Green Peace Research Vessel, or the one Virginia University uses for Semester at Sea.

@ifdattic @wanderingdev You make awesome points! If you think about it, I wouldnโ€™t be so facetious to jump the gun here. If purchasing a midsize Science Research (R/V or RV) was so expensive, then Virginia University wouldnโ€™t of been able to pull off Semester at Sea. Not to mention National geographic, Green Peace, or other funded groups. Sure you may think they have the Billionaires of the world lined up to endorse them, when in reality that is far from the truth.

As I was mentioning before, in the original posting, groups such as AirBnB, Uber, Pinterest, Tinder, etc all donโ€™t just buy one single piece of real estate, at least to my knowledge. Plus additional names out there, they buy multiple properties! Some have locations in down town Manhattan, Tokyo, Sydney, Delhi (least expensive most likely), Singapore, Brazil (Also slightly more affordable than the others), and so on.

The above being said, a R/V would generally cost you, for the size being required, and if used, anywhere between 2,000,000 USD to 18,000,000 USD, depending on the gear you outfit it with, such as an ice breaker haul, utility vehicles, New mess haul appliances, etc.

Now remembering that you would be buying just one boat, verses a gaggle or so of skyscrapers. From what Iโ€™ve gathered, having a positive mind, skyscrapers start minimum of 10,000,000 USD and can go to several BILLION! Unless you plan on buying a U.S. Aircraft carrier, which is far from what Iโ€™m saying, you could buy several R/Vโ€™s and come nowhere close to the limit you would spend on a single skyscraper.

Besides the fact that if you DO decide to ask your employees to sacrifice salary for accommodations, since they would not be doing so as they would if working at a fixed location, like a tax, that would be sufficient for any maintenance that would need to be addressed to such a vessel.

When I worked at a hotel in Miami, FL on Ocean Drive, I was given a tour by the โ€œEngineering Teamโ€ of the facility. These were NOT your average Janitors. These guys worked with some SERIOUS equipment. From HVAC Systems to high tech Boiler Unites that were nearly as, if not more, complex than your average Diesel Combustion Engine found on a boat.

Here are some links to support what I have said thus far.

http://www.loopnet.com/for-sale/manhattan-ny/ (I had the search criteria of Manhattan, New York Entered)

P.S. Not to mention Chelsea, I wasnโ€™t even searching in the most popular areas of town that companies are in the market for.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

I am planning to travel to Mexico City next weekend and stay for 7-10 days there. I wonder if cafes, stores and other places like these work? And if cafes work, do they work as usual or only for take away&delivery? Will be very thankful if someone can help here.

How to get into the digital nomad lifestyle?

in Switzerland by @filiptk 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.

I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is โ€“ how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?

How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

I'd be happy to get some insight into how things work and also happy to network with anyone interested.

How to get a UK residence address without renting/buying?

by @pavel_maximov 4yr 4 years ago  | 17 comments

Background:
Iโ€™m an EU national IT specialist, recently decided to become a digital nomad. I just left my permanent job in Germany and opened a UK based LTD (for a better taxation) to start a new career as remote working IT contractor. I also want to become a UK resident and pay personal income tax there BUT I donโ€™t want to rent/buy a place because I have no interest in physically living in the UK, as a nomad I will be traveling abroad 100% of the time.

So I just need a UK address where Iโ€™m registered as a resident and could receive mail, but I would never actually be there. I could rent a place and keep it empty but that would be a total waste of money.

Question:
How do I find somebody who could give me an official residence at his/her address and keep my name on the door? Iโ€™m ok with paying a reasonable monthly fee for this โ€œserviceโ€ (but not as high as a rent), and give assurance in whatever form that I will never pretend to physically live there. I have no close friends in the UK to ask for this favor, and trying to propose this to a random landlord would be just weird since they are not familiar with the needs of a digital nomad.

Maybe you guys can suggest me somebody who understand the situation and want to make some extra cash every month to pay the bills? Iโ€™m ready to meet in person, provide full proof of identity or any other document, and to make a written agreement that gives the landlord the freedom to cancel this โ€œsituationโ€ at any time.

Note:
This is NOT for tax evasion, itโ€™s the opposite! I WANT to pay full tax as UK resident, I just donโ€™t want to waste money on a rent which I will literally never use.

I would be very grateful for any advice!

Pavel

Greece- WIFI- how is it really?

in Greece by @amandamay 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

We are leaving for Greece in 60 days and need good wifi for the 3 months we plan on staying there, this is a must! Iโ€™ve heard mixed reviews and the 8-10 ranking on nomadlist are not super encouraging. Has anyone recently worked from there? What should we expect? We plan on renting an apartment after staying in airbnb and would like to work from the place we are staying in. Thanks so much for helping me decide if we can continue on or change plans.

Nomad in Europe and buying a car

by @toob 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Weโ€™re nomadโ€™ing around Europe, living in places for a few months at a time. It would be super convenient to own a car for this, but we havenโ€™t found a good option to buy and keep one without being a steady registered resident in any country. Every time we move weโ€™d have to basically change number plates et cetera.

Does anyone have any experience with this and has helpful advice?

Should nomads travel into countries with war crime problems?

by @srg_b 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

Today I read an article about hundreds of thousands of Kurds who were misplaced and lost their homes during military siege of Kurdish cities Sur and Diyarbakir by the Turkish Army. Source below:

I was aware for some time now that the Turkish military is using excessive force against its Kurdish minority, especially after the military coup crackdown this summer. This is one of such articles

Now, looking from a broader perspective, do you think we should travel into countries which are going to use the tax money (which we will contribute to) to finance military campaigns with heavy human rights violations and consequences against civilian lives? Isnโ€™t that like crowdfunding war crime campaigns? How do other people observe such cases? This articleโ€™s focal point is Turkey, but I am sure there are many other countries around the world with similar problems.

Heads up! Opening Charles Schwab account abroad

by @ahawkins 8yr 8 years ago  | 13 comments

I recently opened a Charles Schwab checking account because Iโ€™m sick of paying ATM fees abroad (been about 5 years now so it adds up). I did this online while I was in India. Everything went off fine opening the account online until a week or so later when I received a letter saying my account needed to be verified. No problem I thought, call the people up and answer a few questions. Wrong! Since I opened my account from a non-US IP, my SSN had been flagged. This requires in person verification! There is no way around this now. I asked if I VPNโ€™d with a US IP and tried to open a new account would it work. The CSR said no, my SSN is now flagged and the only way for me to get an account at Charles Schwab is to go branch and verify my identify in person.

So this is word of warning for any US people opening bank accounts while abroad. I suggest you VPN to get a US IP when opening any account. Probably with a less well known VPN as well.

Good luck out there!

How to get into the zone without caffeine?

by @panoramica 8yr 8 years ago  | 17 comments

Iโ€™m recovering from a stomach bug so caffeine and sugar, the two staples of late night development, are off the menu. As a result Iโ€™m finding it quite hard to get motivated!

Does anyone have some alternative techniques to wake my brain up and plug me in?

Currently Iโ€™m indulging in music but itโ€™s not having quite the same effect as the killer combo of coffee/music/chocolate
