What's good nomad spots for kitesurfing?

by @yangwao 8yr  | 8 comments

Lately Iโ€™ve learned little kitesurfing and Iโ€™m new in digital nomadism.
Iโ€™d like join these exciting things into something. Got idea if there are some digital nomads who like kitesurfing and planned go to somewhere.

I have some locations, where some digital nomads would go:

  • Tarifa, Spain
  • Montenegroโ€™s Hidden Coastline (Croatiaโ€™s Dalmatian coast and Albania)
  • Sicilia, Italy
  • Lefkada, Greece
  • Bay of Roses / Sant Pere Pescador area 1,5 hr away from Barcelona and Castelldefels which is a beachtown-suburb of Barcelona have the best kitesurf conditions + infrastructure after Tarifa in mainland Spain
  • Bali, Indonesia (cowork there! http://www.dojobali.org)
  • Tenerife, Canary Islands (there was some organized trip lately, http://www.meetup.com/workoff/events/227343513/ for 80โ‚ฌ with flights, coworking-space + activities )

Who is interested to do some kind of calendar or plan something, or is there already some kind of this calendar?

disclaimer, surfers != kitesurfers :sweat_smile:

Iโ€™m planning a trip to Hawaii in Oct to kite and work. I hear incredible things, and you know youโ€™ll have reliable internet! Other than that am super down for a group trip to Canaries / Greece! If anyoneโ€™s organising, loop me in

Cape Town, South Africa - a bit out of the way, but you will love it here! Strong and constant winds from November to March.

+1 for Tarifa. You can find great kiting all year round, and itโ€™s a great place to live (cheap, unspoiled by mass tourism, great internet, friendly small town with history, high quality food, and parties if youโ€™re interested). Downside is that the popular beaches get crowded in the summer, but there are literally miles of kitable beach, so you might just have to walk a bit more. Lived there for a year, and really canโ€™t find many bad things to say about it. Visa is the major problem for non-Europeans.

Count me in if you ever want to make a kiting focused nomad trip.

I second Brazil being an ideal spot for kitesurfing, but indeed, a strong Internet connection is a must for us! Perth in Australia is also quite popular. In Asia, Hua Hin in Thailand or Boracay in the Philippines are good. Yet again, the winds arenโ€™t the same all year-round in Asia, so it depends on the season really.

Hi Yangwoa,

Bali does have some kitesurfing and is great for digital nomads. I was there the whole of October and did a couple of sessions at Sanur on the East coast where there is a kite school and cheap rentals. I stayed on the west coast and saw a couple of people out on a few days. The wind in Oct was not strong and 12-15m kites were the norm. June-Aug is meant to have more wind. Lots of Wifi (although not that fast) 3G coverage is good.
Wakepark is great, but unlike most things in Bali which are really cheap, they do charge western rates for using the cable :frowning:

I am currently in Mui Ne Vietnam where the wind is great. Water a bit choppy. I counted about 200 kitesurfers out the other day which means that is is a bit busy, but the level of riding is amazing. The internet apart from the last day or two has been amazing 10Mbps up and down is normal, had 40Mbps up and down at one hotel! 3G also very good and my $10 15 day unlimited internet sim is still going strong after a month! Not met many digital nomads here, but sure they must be somewhere!

Tarifa - Great
Fuerteventura - Great (Not met many nomads yet, but thin kthis is picking up and someone has started a coworking space there).

Cape Verde - Internet was a bit slow a few years ago, but did have free wifi on miles of beach which was nice!

Also kited in Mauritius and Turks & Caicos, but not really much of a nomad scene there that I am aware of.

Maybe Cape Verde too?

It has amazing spots in Sal island. World famous kite surfers are from there.

If you want to know more pm me. I have a good friend who lives there.

Hi yangwao,

Bali doesnโ€™t have kitesurfing. There isnโ€™t enough wind for it to be worth even trying. Surfing there is great though.

Mui Ne in Vietnam is a good kitesurfing + nomad spot. its a few hours drive from Saigon and has thermal wind conditions, great internet and low living costs. The upside is the thermals give very predictable conditions. The downside is that the beach drops off deep very quickly so the conditions are very choppy (like a washing machine) when the wind picks up. To the north there is a pretty good wave spot where you can ride monster waves that are perfect for kiting. You also need to be wary of many riders that donโ€™t know basic international rules like right of way, especially when wave riding.

Hua Hin is another one, however I found the wind to be a bit light for my liking. Conditions are great if youโ€™re a beginner/intermediate kiter.

Fuerteventura is another good island in the Canaries, have to drive to the spots though.

Cabarete, Dominican Republic is a good combo of decent internet and great kiting conditions. Thermal conditions due to the mountains, however aim to get 2 weeks of decent wind for every 3. Lots of other things to do (great place for beginner surfing) when there is no wind.

NE coast of Brasil (north of Fortaleza) is the prime spot for kiting, however the internet is shotty and unreliable. Best conditions Iโ€™ve ever found.

For other spot guides:
http://www.kitesurfatlas.com/
http://www.wannakitesurf.com/

Trick is finding decent internet + amenities alongside decent kiting.

Thought there was kite surfing in Sanur area. Isnโ€™t it the case??

One thing for sure, there is a wake park that opened in April 2015. Itโ€™s loads of fun

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

How to get into the digital nomad lifestyle?

in Switzerland by @filiptk 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.

I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is โ€“ how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?

How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

I'd be happy to get some insight into how things work and also happy to network with anyone interested.

What's the best thing to do with your phone/ your phone number when travelling?

in Poland by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey, hope everyone is well!

We're leaving in a month to go travelling. Our first destination is still to be confirmed, but will likely be Poland or Slovakia. We will be moving around every month or two to different destinations.

The question we have is: what do people do with phones/ phone numbers when hopping from country to country? Ideally we'd just like one number for the whole trip (even better, the number we already have) wherever we go, rather than getting new SIMs with different numbers.

This is just so it's easier to keep in contact with family/ clients/ etc.

Any Ph.D students dissertating while a digital nomad?

Anyone know of any groups or resources for Ph.D. students working on dissertation while living as a digital nomad? I know there are several virtual writing groups around, but wondered if there were any specifically for digital nomads, particularly those who are dissertating.

Thanks!

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen 4yr 4 years ago  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

How do you invest internationally as a nomad?

by @mateuszwieloch 4yr 4 years ago  | 17 comments

I have finally saved enough money to start investing. What company gives good, diversified access to stock, ETFs and mutual funds? Does it make sense to use company like Vanguard or Fidelity for that? Iโ€™m a EU/Poland citizen, how would I transfer my money back and forth without incurring significant fees?

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks

How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira 4yr 4 years ago  | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!
