Where's home? Where do you return to?

by @magalhini 9yr  | 10 comments

Hi there!

Iโ€™m sorry if this question has been asked before, whether in disguise or directly, but I couldnโ€™t find its own dedicated topic and I find it very interesting to talk about.

One of my issues with the remote working world is the lack of knowledge of where to return to. After a one/two/ten month stint living and working somewhere else (say Airbnbโ€™ing or a short let, meaning a place that is NOT yours by any means), where do you return to?

  • Do most nomads own a place that you rent while you travel?
  • If not, is this something that you consider doing?
  • Do you return to your home country before deciding where to go next? Or do you jump directly somewhere new?
  • And when you return, do you find the need to be in a personal, private space? (ie, not sharing with strangers 24/7 365 days a year)

Speaking for myself, Iโ€™ve gotten rid of my apartment in Portugal 2 years ago and moved to London simply for the pursuit of new and interesting opportunities. Iโ€™m now, at last, working remotely and I plan on working and living for a few weeks/months in random European cities, but not knowing where to return after to after thisโ€ฆ is killing me! (I still own too many possessions to carry in a backpack. Not too many, but moving is a hassle).

  • Those of you who travel without a set of keys on you, how do you deal with this thought? Iโ€™m really curious to get to know your views on this.

Thanks in advance. This forum has helped me a lot convincing me that this is a leap I need to make sooner or later  cheers!

My home has been SoCal (which is where my storage facility is). But it is definitely not home as I donโ€™t really like the place all that much (although the weather is exceptional!). I wrestle with having a true home base from time to time but the places I love are super pricey and I am truly nomadic (never staying in one spot all that long). It would be nice to have a few places sprinkled about but across Europe/Asia/America - but it surely would prove costly and Iโ€™m not all that sure Iโ€™d use them all that much. It would provide peace of mind though and emotional comfort. Weird that, as humans are a nomadic people we have become so accustomed and tied to a place and stuff.

I use my momโ€™s home as a permanent address, but I donโ€™t go back there. I guess I can say Iโ€™m permanently homeless as well. The need for adventure supersedes my need to feel secure in a permanent home.

Personally I donโ€™t feel the need for having a home. All of my possessions fit in my backpack. Except for some gear I use for Burning Man, which is stored at some friendsโ€™ house in the Bay Area.

I do return to certain places, and more and more places feel like home now. E.g. Lisbon, Copenhagen, Berlin, San Francisco, etc.

I tend to visit friends and family in Norway once or twice per year, usually when Iโ€™m traveling between Europe and the US or Asia, as itโ€™s often the cheapest routing anyway. Especially after Norwegian started their long-haul operation. But Norway is no longer home, I donโ€™t store stuff there, and I never plan on moving back there. But as long as I still have one living grand parent Iโ€™ll probably return quite frequently.

For snail mail, I use virtual mailboxes.

I have considered renting a place long term, and sublet it via Airbnb most of the year. But in the end I decided itโ€™s more hassle than itโ€™s worth. I for one prefer to move around without a set of keys.

We have to return to the states at least twice a year for my husbandโ€™s job and we spend Thanksgiving and Christmas in the states with family. We donโ€™t own our own home base, so family helps us.

We use my in-lawsโ€™ house for a mailing address and a tiny bit of long term storage (silverware, photo albums) in Tennessee. We use my parentsโ€™ house in New Jersey for a little bit of short-term storage (seasonal items such as ski equipment).

We use the trunk of our car to store things we like to have when weโ€™re not traveling by plane like board games  because we fly with only carry-ons. We leave our car with my parents in New Jersey or with my husbandโ€™s relatives in Washington D.C. (depending on which airport is easiest to fly in and out of.)

So we tend to pass through the east in between stints abroad to rotate out supplies and visit family.

Iโ€™m permanently homeless. I have a few things stored in a closet at my momโ€™s house, but itโ€™s not home and I donโ€™t return there. I just keep going. Iโ€™ve no desire to have a home base in a permanent location though I do miss having a consistent personal space. so i intend to get one that I can move with me.

This is a big struggle for me as I donโ€™t have a home base and keep all my possessions with my parents (thereโ€™s not that much though). One reason I like to travel and check out places is to see if I could potentially own or rent a home there at some point in the future when I can afford it.

If thereโ€™s no particular place that youโ€™re attached to, the traveling helps you to find out what kind of things you prioritize and where you might prefer to live more permanently.

I own property in Los Angeles but I rent it out so I couldnโ€™t go back there even if I wanted to, unless I wait until the end of my tenantโ€™s lease and donโ€™t let them renew it.

Iโ€™m considering buying a place in Bulgaria (a studio apartment costs less than I paid for my last car in the States) so I could use that as โ€œhome,โ€ but I know that if I leave it unoccupied for too long, Iโ€™ll want to rent it out because I feel itโ€™d be wasteful not to.

So to answer your questionโ€ฆum, yeah, like nowhere I suppose. โ€œHomeโ€ is wherever I am.

Personally, I rent a home in Maui, Hawaii year round. That is home for us. When weโ€™re away (about 6 months / year) we try to rent it to friends, otherwise we leave it empty.

It is our home and not setup to be AirBNBโ€™d and we donโ€™t really want to do that (at least not yet).

I love going new places, but it so much easier to go somewhere I know well and where I know exactly what itโ€™ll take to sit down and get to work in a productive manner.

Top of that list is Chiang Mai. Over the last 8 years Iโ€™ve easily spent 12 months JUST in Chiang Mai. I usually stay in the old city at a guest house Iโ€™ve been staying since my first trip. I know the staff, I know the laundry people, itโ€™s super cheap and comfortable for me. Iโ€™ve occasionally stayed in Nimman, but I never like it. I was really trying to find somewhere over there closer to Punspace, but now with the Thae Pae gate location Iโ€™ll stop exploring and remain happy in the old city.

Ubudโ€ฆ about 6 months. Not quite a โ€œSecond homeโ€ yet, but itโ€™s getting there. I know a lot of people (locals and DNs), that makes it comfy to land in. I need to explore North Kuta/Canguu. As much as a love Ubud itโ€™s too far from the beach and a few to many yoga touristsโ€ฆ Not bad, just not quite perfect for me.

Koh Phangan - Again, 6 months cumulatively and because Iโ€™ve figured out how to live and work from a beach without road access (well there is a dirt road and truck/taxi now, but still).

All of that is really to sayโ€ฆ I return to places I find comfortable.

Once I convince my soon to be wife weโ€™ll either let go of the home in Maui or at least put it into AirBNB land when weโ€™re awayโ€ฆ putting our priceless things in storage.

One last sidenote for those looking to put things a back home in storage. A good full-time DN friend of mine keeps a small office, which comes with a parking space. For him having a place to park his car, a mailbox to receive mail is priceless. He has an assistant check in on things about once a week. Having someone check in on a small office is way easier than checking on a whole house

Thanks for your insight, Jon! It must feel pretty good to have such a solid comfort with the place and the locals already, over there in Chiang Mai, every time youโ€™re around. Curious to hear that youโ€™re thinking about letting go of your house in Maui โ€” but it seems that youโ€™ve got no shortages of places that you can call home anytime

Cheers for the inspiration!

Many nomads have home โ€˜basesโ€™ in different places. A lot of nomads primary base is actually their parents (haha yes yes this generation never leaves their parents, I know).

Many people have their favorite spots that they keep returning to, that start to feel like home.

Others who have saved some money have bought real estate in a place or multiple places, and AirBnB the houses out when they are away. Thatโ€™s smart financially and gives you free living in a few places.

Iโ€™d love to have 4 home bases, e.g. in Amsterdam, Sao Paulo, Bali and Boulder

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Getting started: where to?

by @vforvalerio87 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everybody!

I just joined this community because Iโ€™m currently in a place in life where I can live the digital nomad lifestyle and I feel like I would really be missing out if I didnโ€™t catch this opportunity. I work fully remotely, no fixed hours, I currently live in northern Italy and I basically have no partner or kids.

So, the question isโ€ฆ where to? I would love to hear the advice of more experienced digital nomads!
Laptop and internet is enough for me to work but I need decent internet for conferencing and I really have to put in the hours: some days are more relaxed, others Iโ€™ll have to work all day and night.
I enjoy more temperate climates, so no torrid heat or unbearable humidity, if possible.
I like decent food but Iโ€™m very adaptable in terms of tastes: anything is fine as long as quality is good and sanitary conditions are acceptable.
I absolutely do not enjoy the club life and would just rather go hiking during the weekends and pubs (or breweries) during the evenings. Iโ€™m a social person though and I donโ€™t particularly enjoy places where people are too introverted (been in Seattle for four monthsโ€ฆ the freeze is real); I really look forward to making friends or acquaintances wherever I end up.
I enjoy decent transportation so places where thereโ€™s a viable metro system or Uber actually works would be nice.
I prefer places with a bit more of history and culture (this is one of the reasons why I absolutely loved Portugal, for example).
Iโ€™d like to spend under $3k average per month for rent, food and going out.

For now I was thinking either:

  • Staying close to home for a first experience, so something like Vienna or Berlin
  • South East Asia; Iโ€™ve been to Hong Kong a few times before, now I was thinking either Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi, or possibly Thailand
  • South America, especially Colombia. I also have some people I know in Bogota and in Medellin, which I think would be a plus

When? Ideally I would leave anywhere from mid to late March and stay away for 2 or 3 months.

Sorry for the long read, I hope to get some input. Thank you for your time, if we ever meet in person I owe you a beer (or whatever youโ€™d prefer).

As a woman and/or minority, are there any places you would not recommend traveling to?

by @gigigriffis 7yr 7 years ago  | 29 comments

Hi all!

So, Iโ€™m in Colombia at the moment and have experienced some really intense harassment and even violence here. I was shocked because itโ€™s been recommended to me by so many people, and so I thought perhaps it would be useful to start a thread here where we (we being women and other minorities) can talk about places where we recommend either not traveling or being particularly on guard.

So, are there any places youโ€™ve been where youโ€™ve experienced more violence, harassment, or maltreatment? Are there any places that you recommend other women/LGBT/ethnic minorities be particularly careful or not travel to?

I donโ€™t want this to become a super negative thing or a personal preference thing, but I am hoping to get some insight into areas that might be more concerning and/or unsafe for certain groups so that we can all make informed decisions about where we want to spend our time. I really wish someone would have been frank with me about the issues here in Colombia, so Iโ€™m hoping we can be frank with each other about places where we havenโ€™t felt 100% safe.

So, Iโ€™ll start:

Iโ€™ve had little to no problems in other parts of South and Central America, but here in Colombia I have witnessed not only street harassment, but also actual violence and malice and, worse, have seen people who could do something to stop it shrugging it off and saying โ€œitโ€™s normal here.โ€ I would not recommend it for women and particularly women traveling alone.

Similarly, in Morocco I felt very uncomfortable as a female traveler. There wasnโ€™t as much yelling or in-your-face harassment, but there was a ton of staring, men invading my space (standing over me in a bus and staring down at me from less than a foot away, for example), and men treating me like a second-class citizen (refusing to let me pass them on the sidewalk and instead forcing me to go around them into a busy street). I was traveling with a friend and we were both pretty exhausted by the end of the trip.

Has anyone tried Spotahome?

by @wordmonkey 8yr 8 years ago  | 0 comments

Heya,

Iโ€™m looking into renting a flat in Istanbul for the somewhat longer term (between half a year and a whole year) from next spring, and Iโ€™ve come across spotahome.com, which seems to have quite a range of promising properties available in a number of cities, including Istanbul. The concept appears to be similar to Airbnb, with the exception that the site staff act as agents between you and the landlord to set up the initial arrangement; afterwards, everything is handled directly with the owner of the property. It also appears a bit more geared towards longer-term rentals compared to Airbnb. Has anyone used this site before? (Iโ€™ve run a search with only one result, so I assume the page is either fairly new or not very successfulโ€ฆ)

Cheers
Sylvie

Digital work in return for lodgings and food?

by @tuesdaygroup 8yr 8 years ago  | 18 comments

Hi Everyone,

Iโ€™m myself a digital nomad. So this is a nomad 2 nomad question

It seems to be a popular trend for people to live and work on local farms in returns for daily meals and lodgings. (Southern Portugal)

Typically for 1-3 months periods

My Question
Iโ€™m just purely throwing out an idea here. But would any digital nomads be interested in a similar deal ?. Digital work in return for lodgings and food??

Im interested to hear peoples feelings on this one, be it good or bad! I understand this wouldnt be for everyone but a might be appealing to others?

Thanks for reading my question. If any nomads are interested right off the bat feel free to drop me a PM for further details.

How have you dealt with bereavement when you are halfway around the world and can not make it home?

by @iamjamesrodgers 8yr 8 years ago  | 5 comments

I really wish I didnโ€™t have to ask this, itโ€™s such a sensitive topic to many but unfortunately Death is inevitable in our lives as we grow -

My Girlfriend and I are currently upon our first lengthy nomadic travels, and a beloved friend has had her Mother tragically and rather quickly pass away.

My Girlfriend is really struggling and feeling suffocated by the distance.

What is the best techniques to be a supportive person to a beloved friend whoโ€™s parent has just passed away while you are on the other side of the world? Or the passing of someone in general? So far weโ€™ve sent an arrangement and wrote a letter to convey our empathy for the friend and Her family -

We both just want our support to be felt and to be enough to make up for not being physically there, it would break my heart for us to be seen as non supportive in this tough time.

A place in Melbourne I can send a box to?

Desired characteristics:
-good internet (10mb at the very least)
