Which travel resource has helped you the most on your journey from tourist to traveler?

by @et 8yr  | 8 comments

Hi guys,

Iโ€™ve been thinking a lot lately about my travel experiences over the last few years. I started looking at old travel photos and one thing led to anotherโ€ฆ

While getting nostalgic, I began to ponder over the ways in which my travel has changed over the years. I thought about how much time Iโ€™d spent, perhaps needlessly, before my travels in a more anxious, static lifestyle, confined to my comfort zone, and essentially ignorant to so many of the many benefits a life of perpetual travel has to offer.

I began to ask, if I could go back 10 years and give myself some advice which could get me to travel sooner, what might I have said?

This got me thinking:

Thereโ€™s so much valuable content about the travel process scattered across various books, blogs, forums, and videos. Frankly itโ€™s overwhelming, and I consider myself to be a relatively experienced traveler. I can only imagine what this would be like for someone whoโ€™s perhaps just beginning to consider taking the travel leap for the first time - Let alone becoming a perpetual traveler.

Was wondering if I had a free, centralized resource which pooled together the expert travelerโ€™s experiences, in a simplified step by step fashion, would I have begun travelling sooner? An inspiring collaboration of sorts, which is continually updated to reflect the latest trends and tools in travel.

Does this exist? Is there a resource which helped you transition from aspiring traveler to nomad?

Numbeo see http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/ is good to get an idea of costs generally especially to compare one place with another e.g I compared Panama City and San Jose because both are short listed for two months this winter. As an example if you compare two similar big cities say London and Berlin the financials are very different and both are great cities see below:

Indices Difference Info
Consumer Prices in Berlin are 21.39% lower than in London
Consumer Prices Including Rent in Berlin are 39.94% lower than in London
Rent Prices in Berlin are 63.03% lower than in London
Restaurant Prices in Berlin are 37.15% lower than in London
Groceries Prices in Berlin are 13.61% lower than in London
Local Purchasing Power in Berlin is 35.56% higher than in London

Now Compare Berlin and Zรผrich where I spend 5 months a year and you will see why I like Berlin!!

Consumer Prices in Berlin are 49.75% lower than in Zurich
Consumer Prices Including Rent in Berlin are 52.43% lower than in Zurich
Rent Prices in Berlin are 58.33% lower than in Zurich
Restaurant Prices in Berlin are 57.90% lower than in Zurich
Groceries Prices in Berlin are 58.98% lower than in Zurich
Local Purchasing Power in Berlin is 21.89% lower than in Zurich

I find Trip Advisor is good to figure out what is there as far as food, drink and hangouts etc. This site is worth a look too http://www.escapeartist.com

Iโ€™m not a big fan of the traveler/tourist distinction even though Iโ€™m guilty of using it myself.

That said, the best resource for independent travel after Wikivoyage is imho travelindependent.info:
http://www.travelindependent.info/

Their location guides are really comprehensive and this map alone is worth looking into the site:

I was an active contributor at Wikitravel for years, but now consider it a zombie site, still there but no longer alive & useful; nearly all the most active contributors, including me, left in 2012 to create Wikivoyage. WV does not have the advertising that WT does, has better spam control, more active editors, & is run by the same foundation as Wikipedia.
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Wikivoyage_and_Wikitravel

Most of WV is indeed location specific, but there are also โ€œtravel topicโ€ articles covering more general things like avoiding scams, teaching English, working abroad, travel photography, etc. Hereโ€™s an index of those:

Wikitravel is pretty location specific. Iโ€™m thinking more along the lines of when you know you want to travel, but donโ€™t necessarily know where to start.

I mean, you do research, find flights, book accommodation etcโ€ฆ

But for the inexperienced traveler, this can be daunting because there are so many different resources out there (and new tools become available all the time). As you travel and gain experience, this becomes easier.

Is there a single resource which can decrease this learning curve to help the aspiring traveler?

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

How does Ireland tourist visa length and recurrence work?

in Ireland by @nrgetik 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning a stint in Ireland and Iโ€™m wondering about the 90-day tourist visa. Official information just mentions the 90-day limit without elaboration. Is it akin to Schengen where itโ€™s counted against the most recent 180-day period? Iโ€™m asking because I might like to take trips to the continent flying out of Dublin, but I donโ€™t know how I should account for the days Iโ€™m gone if I do that. Do I stop the 90-day clock for Ireland while Iโ€™m away, or should I make sure Iโ€™m gone from Ireland <= 90 days after my initial arrival date, regardless of where else I go during that interval, just to be safe? What have others done?

Can I enter Thailand on a tourist visa and obtain an education visa there?

in Thailand by @hydrofog 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

As an American Citizen, would it be safe to fly into Thailand without a visa? You can get a 30 day upon entry right?

The reason I ask is, Iโ€™m in the process of getting my passport. Iโ€™d like to leave basically as soon as my passport arrives in the mail. Iโ€™m unable to apply for a Thai Visa until I have my passport, so that would require an even longer wait.

Would I be able to fly into Thailand with no visa, then get a 30 day entry, then apply for an education visa while inside the country? Once I go, Iโ€™d like to not have to return to the US. I donโ€™t mind if I have to take a bus/flight to a neighboring country for however long if I must leave while I wait for an education visa.

What are some good resources for professional prospective Mexican Nomads to do freelance translations and copyediting in Spanish in the United States and Canada?

in Canada by @nightchimp 7yr 7 years ago  | 2 comments

I have a friend who is a UNAM graduate in Philology (I know, wow, a Renaissance Woman), who has been creating textual translations between Spanish, English and sometimes Russian for writers, poets and journalists in Mexico City. She is very good at what she does, and has a client base, and just recently gained a client in the US. I want her to be able to take advantage of digital means to reach potential clients in the US and Canada, especially in regions where there are not a lot of Spanish speakers already present and active in this work locally. What are some good resources to find these sorts of opportunities? Yes, weโ€™ve beaten the proverbial bush to find Indeed listings, Craigslist (so sad what has happened to CL lately), and LinkedIn, as well as Upwork.com and Freelancer.com. We found mostly bupkiss. Any tips/hints/admonitions? Thanks in advance!

What are some good Spanish language learning resources?

by @anon82020850 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey all,

I am planning to move over to South America next year, and in preparation I want to start learning Spanish.

I have started working with Duolingo, but would love to hear some advice from others in the community as to resources (apps, podcasts etc) that will help with this? Does anyone else have any suggestion as to what worked for you?

I am under no illusion that an app or podcast will probably not make me speak the language particularly well, but it will at least place me in a better position than if I made no effort to learn the language.

Once I am between native speakers and have more opportunity to practice I am sure I will improve a lot, but for now I am looking into getting a bit of a jumpstart.

Thanks

I'm beginning my Nomadic journey - what advice do you have?

by @jacob_tr 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hello Everyone,

On January 8, I set off on my Nomadic Journeys. I have a one way ticket to Iceland booked for a film shoot, and a flight into mainland Europe on the 20th, and from there I have no idea, and I am completely on my own.

What advice do you have? Right now I am feeling everything, from bad to good about it all, really can feel that safety/wool from underneath me get pulled away, I know Iโ€™m jumping out of my shell here.

(To give some background, Iโ€™m starting my nomad journey after having started a successful business, so financially I am set. Itโ€™s the question personally, mentally how do you cope in the beginning of leaving everything and going?)

After extending a Philippines tourist visa, can you leave the country and come back in on that visa?

in Philippines by @kaizenpreneur 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello,

Iโ€™m in the Philippines currently on a the standard 30 day tourist visa. Iโ€™m planning on spending an extended period of time here with the odd joint here and there around S.E.Asia.

I am aware that you can now extend your visa in 60 day blocks without leaving the country. However, if i were to extend it by 60 days and then decide I want to leave for a few days to another country.

Would exiting the country then null and void that visa and when I return I would start again on the 30-day tourist visa. Or does it allow multi-entry?

Just trying to work out whether it is worth paying for the extension or itโ€™s better to try and fit any trips out within the 30 day periods that I get.

One side point is that I am interested in getting the photo ID card which I believe you get after a couple of extensions which may allow me to open a local bank account.

It would be great to hear from anyone in a similar position as this or who has experience with this.

Thanks in advance

Jon

Schengen tourist visa - legal to work for home companies?

by @lefnire 8yr 8 years ago  | 33 comments

So I know itโ€™s illegal to work in Europe for European companies without a work visa / permit. Iโ€™m also aware of the Germany freelancer visa, which lets you work in Germany legally for 3 years (but Iโ€™m not stationing in Germany; I want to hop hop hop). I see many digital nomads programming on the road, making income from American companies on a Schengen tourist visa. Of course this seems fine, since itโ€™s brining American dollars into Europe. But is it legal? Has anyone had experiences / conversations with immigration, or seen this discussed anywhere online? My Google fu fails me here.

What are the best/non-tourist places in Malaysia in Jan?

in Malaysia by @kathrynoh 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning on travelling from Australia to the UK in Jan. I booked flights with a stopover in Malaysia for 2 weeks planning on going to Penang for that but wasnโ€™t thinking that itโ€™ll be peak tourist season!

Since I hate being in busy places, I am now reconsidering and wondered if there was anywhere with decent working spaces/cafes/accommodation that wonโ€™t be too overcrowded. The alternative is to just hang out in KL. Iโ€™ve been there a few times and wanted to try somewhere new but maybe holing up and having a work โ€œbootcampโ€ for the two weeks might be a better idea

Experience with e-Tourist Visas in India anyone?

in India by @them 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

Hi all,

did anyone (with a EU Passport) ever got a e-Tourist Visa for India? Visa regulations in India change quite often, so I am wondering, if it is actually possible to get the e-Tourist Visa (eTV) that is issued on arrival.

Thanks!
