Would you like more adventure? If so, what kind?

by @adrianb 7yr  | 6 comments

Personally, after 4+ years and 30+ countries Iโ€™m getting kinda bored. I feel embarrassed asking the question. Iโ€™m also super excited to hear your answers.

Thatโ€™s the problem with us, digital nomads  The life gets so easy, handy and comfortable, thanks to so many different ways we can spend our time (like change our place every 2nd day or just stay at the beach with coconuts and chill there), that after some time it actually gets difficult to find any next challenges for us.

I was travelling for 1.5 years around SE Asia and Europe. Now Iโ€™m having a short break by living and working in 1 city. It was super cool in the beginning [meeting my old peers], then quite depressing in the middle [โ€œwtf am I doing here? Thai beach was much better, people didnt have to work 9-5 thereโ€], but now itโ€™s getting quite good (new friends and social circles; relationships; took up some new skills]. However I planned to go travelling again in a next month or so, lol.

Anyway, Iโ€™m still going through that โ€˜what-to-doโ€™ problem, but what Iโ€™ve seen recently that works for me is:

  • find some good soul mates [force yourself to meet them, if u havenโ€™t yet]
  • pick up a good goal for the future [so you dont end up going cluelessly somewhere with no direction]

I did have those things all my previous life, until I reached the digital nomad point. Since being a kid I wanted to travel around the world and be financially independentโ€ฆ which I managed to accomplish. Now the problem is: what the hell do you do now? ; )

Try picking up some hobbies / new skills. Set up some goals/challenges for yourself. I started to play drums recently and take some theatre classes. This opened up a whole new world for me. You can do it either locally or on your travel. It can be personal goals as well, like โ€˜be more humorousโ€™, โ€˜become a story tellerโ€™, etc.

Also recently I noticed that as soon I have some good plans for myself for the nearest time, Iโ€™m 100% focused and donโ€™t have time for philosophical contemplations like this one  Knowing this fact, a while after I did some brainstorming about what I actually enjoy and what I could be doing in next ~5-10 years. I think Iโ€™m in the end of my crisis finally now. I just have to pick one of the few options. โ€œLife is the art of choosingโ€, right.

did you try slow travel / going more in depth, seeking density?

for example

@adrianbeckett79 maybe the whole travel thing has become routine for you and you are no longer doing things outside of your comfort zone. Maybe make a list of thing you have yet to do and then prioritise doing them? Also stop doing things that you find boring. Identify things that you find fun and make time to do that instead.

@sonjameyer you should probably stop expecting other people to make life fun for youโ€ฆ they will rarely meet your expectation. I guess this depends heavily on your personality and whether your introverted or extroverted, but maybe try learn to have fun when your are alone.

I guess for some contextโ€ฆ for several years I was increasingly bored of well I guess life. Iโ€™m pretty sure I had a quarter life crisis where I sort of just decided I needed to make my life more fun and enjoyable because otherwise whats the point. What I found was not only was I bored of life, I was also very largely unhappy with it. It took some time but I was able to separate the two feelings.
For happiness, I practised being content, and slowly phased out people, things, jobs, habits etc that made me unhappy.
For fun, well I realised the younger me was much better suited at having fun, so I tried to remember everything I thought about as a child that I wanted to do, and one by one iโ€™m getting it done. Think of this as your bucket list as a child. Its been working amazingly well. The other day I went sky diving for the first time and in the video I am unquestionably enjoying it.

Oops, wrote more then expectedโ€ฆ not even sure its relevantโ€ฆ anyway curious to see what others are doingโ€ฆ

Do a thru-hike! Itโ€™ll change your life. Nothing like experiencing the world at 3 miles an hour.

Yes. Definitely. Iโ€™m not sure what kindโ€ฆ thatโ€™s a question Iโ€™m trying to answer for myself too.

For context, my story goes like this: I travelled a bit through Asia & Europe in my early 20s, then started doing the Digital Nomad thing in my mid-late 20s. Spent 2.5 years away without going home. Iโ€™ve been โ€˜homeโ€™ for almost 2 years (apart from 1 month in Thailand and 1 month in Nepal) and am planning 6+ months in Central/South America from August this year.

The thing Iโ€™ve come to realise is that no matter where I am or what Iโ€™m doing - I feel bored. When Iโ€™m at home Iโ€™m bored because - you know the story - even my most adventurous friends just donโ€™t seem to have the energy to do all that much, most of the time.

When Iโ€™m away I feel bored pretty much for the same reason. The boredom is obviously either a problem with me (Iโ€™m just never satiated no matter what Iโ€™m doing!) or a problem with the world and the fact that no matter where you go, people are complacent andโ€ฆ wellโ€ฆ boring. They donโ€™t have fire.

I do think itโ€™s me though. Because I went to Nepal with 2 close friends and on several occasions I got frustrated with them for being boring. Once when we were ON A 10 DAY HIKE because all they wanted to do was sleep at the end of the day and not sit up and have a whisky with me. May I remind you that they were walking up to 6 hours per day at altitude and were desperately exhausted! And another time on the day we arrived back from the hike and they didnโ€™t want to have a few drinks and see some live music to celebrate with me. I was desperate for more, despite being in Nepal and doing something incredibly adventurous and amazing. More deep chats, more sponteneity, more randomness, more new interactions, more cultural experiences, MORE FUN.

So when you find the answer to the question of what kind of adventure, or what kind of people will satisfy a person after doing and experiencing so much, please let me know. :stuck_out_tongue:

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?
