From "selfish nomadism" to "supportive nomadism" — Greece, anyone?

in Greece by @alldreamedup 9yr  | 12 comments

I’m still trying to decide where to go between October and Christmas this year. Too many criteria to handle and at this point no absolute priority is emerging… first world problems. So I turned the “problem” around, instead of thinking selfishly “what can this or that place do for me?” I am now thinking “what can I do for this or that place”? And so… Greece. I visited Athens & the Peloponnese on holidays last year and found some beautiful spots where I could definitely spend a couple of months, and am now thinking: what if there’s a few of us who rent a big house with Internet (preferably by the sea, that priority is pretty much always top of the list for me though I’m flexible) and turn “selfish nomadism” into “supportive nomadism”? I only have a contact in Nafplio for housing, so if you are interested in helping create this and have ideas/suggestions/contacts let me know in a comment! There may be a few practical difficulties, with the current cash shortage… I haven’t studied this in details but here’s a thought, anyway!

See the other post where I replied to you about revitalizing Greek villages - there is an e-mail for Agata Bez and the Merkai people - she has an e-mail list.

In any case, labels aside, the idea is great. I was thinking to start something similar in Portugal. Co-living (with other nomads, or in a nomad friendly house is appealing to me. A San Fran based group is doing it out there and in Medellin.
It’s the wave of the future.

Personally, I’m kind of over backpackers and my own room while travelling can be lonely. Plus it’s cheaper to live as many than as 1.

What kind of interest is there out there for this type of scenario?

@TheM I wrote this post before any refugee arrived in Greece (july '15) and was referring to the Greek economical crisis that was hitting the country very hard at the time.

@ajsnewman : Nothing happened in the end, I’m working on a more permanent, sedentary “supportive vs. selfish” project.

@them 8yr

When I read “supportive nomadism in Greece” I thought you wanted to actually do something for the locals, like helping out with the refugee crisis for example.

I don t really understand how renting a “big house with Internet” in Greece is turning “selfish nomadism” into “supportive nomadism” for a good cause?

I’m told there are many abandoned villages in Greece where the locals are losing hope for the future, so to have an influx of tech-savvy folks giving them rental income and generally bringing new energy would be welcome. However, you’ll need to check on the wifi infrastructure.

Guys, seriously, noone said you are selfish or exploitative or assholes. I’m only talking about not picking a place to live for selfish reasons, only because we can make a small difference at our level. It’s just about doing things differently, in the same way some tourists go volunteer in Africa while some enjoy sex tourism in Thailand. It’s about choice, and we have a lot of choices, so why not put all this freedom to help a good cause. That is all.

I am a bit behind the times, but I like the idea. What happened?

I am also an avid advocate of high taxes (and dodgy alliteration), everyone is now fair warned.

gotta say, the language you guys use is pretty offensive. unless you’re an asshole, you’re not being selfish or exploiting anyone with your lifestyle, and insinuating that nomads as a whole are both selfish and exploitative is pretty ridiculous. just my $.02

Good thinking.

We’re basically exploiting these places while we dash the hopes of these locals that we’re not gringos with money to throw around at them otherwise we wouldn’t be going out to live there. I’ll keep an eye on this thread just for the “I’m not a dick” factor

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- 🛂 Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- 🎓Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- 🏛 Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and I’m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Introduce yourself — who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo 4yr 4 years ago  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, where’ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but they’re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So let’s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • what’s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you don’t want to
But the more you share… The merrier!

Greece- WIFI- how is it really?

in Greece by @amandamay 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

We are leaving for Greece in 60 days and need good wifi for the 3 months we plan on staying there, this is a must! I’ve heard mixed reviews and the 8-10 ranking on nomadlist are not super encouraging. Has anyone recently worked from there? What should we expect? We plan on renting an apartment after staying in airbnb and would like to work from the place we are staying in. Thanks so much for helping me decide if we can continue on or change plans.

Would you like to help revitalize a village in Greece?

in Greece by @lightmotif 8yr 8 years ago  | 48 comments

Hi all -

I’ve recently connected with an interesting community group called the Meraki people, based in a village in the Peloponnese of Greece, only 2 hours from Athens and its airport, and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Kalamata and its airport…full of cultural gems, great beaches and wild mountainous landscapes. They are trying to bring new life and economy to their villages, in a self-sustaining, technologically-innovative, and environmentally-positive way. And they’re interested in hosting digital nomads in a community experience where you could work on your own projects and/or volunteer to help the local communities, depending on your interests and availability. They have received some significant international recognition already.

I’m trying to work out details around a potential gathering approx mid-Nov to mid-Dec. but also want to gauge interest before getting too far. Cost of lodging should be reasonable/ off-season – apts or private rooms with heat and hot water, and there would be a co-working space + potential community kitchen. @alldreamedup and @munly_leong expressed interested in Greece this fall - have either of you made plans? Also, @srajan821 and @bradonomics - the Meraki people are trying to do something similar to an eco-village, so wanted to give you a shout too.

Hope to hear from some nomads interested this fall (or in the future). Thanks!

Susan

Formentera, Spain vs. Santorini, Greece?

in Santorini , Greece by @que 8yr 8 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi,
I’m ready to start traveling again (looking at May through August, about). I have a little more money to spend and would like an island experience in Southern Europe. I’m a little older and looking for a little more comfort these days. I would plan to rent a 1 bedroom apartment if possible. Places that come to mind are Formentera or Santorini. I’d like to stay for 2 or 3 months. Does anyone have any experiences to share with these two locales. One concern I have about Greece is safety given the economic crisis. Any insight into there would be appreciated.

Thanks

Experience with e-Tourist Visas in India anyone?

in India by @them 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

Hi all,

did anyone (with a EU Passport) ever got a e-Tourist Visa for India? Visa regulations in India change quite often, so I am wondering, if it is actually possible to get the e-Tourist Visa (eTV) that is issued on arrival.

https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html

Thanks!
