Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack 6yr  | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

Just got this termination warning, after 6 months of being abroad (used Fi for at least a year prior to this before traveling overseas). A friend of mine got the warning today, too (not sure how long theyโ€™ve been traveling), so wondering if they just started some kind of crack-down. Not sure what weโ€™ll do, but the risk is very real. Too bad, because itโ€™s otherwise a great optionโ€ฆ

Hey, wanted to give an update. Iโ€™m now going on almost 4 years having t mobile but spending most of my time outside the US. No termination yet but I live mostly in Sweden and use a sim card for data there. I only use my t-mobile US number for texts and occasional data when Iโ€™m outside of EU/US

I found one user report on the Google Fi forums. This couple was terminated after international use for an โ€œextended periods of timeโ€.

This is ridiculous because Fi never advertise international limits. What even are the limits? What is considered an โ€œextended periods of timeโ€ on Google Fi?

And if you run into any issues like losing your phone, Google Fi wonโ€™t ship a new SIM. Leaving you out of luck, with no calling or data while in a foreign country. What a nightmare.

I donโ€™t know about Project Fi, but I used T-Mobile for about two years almost exclusively outside of the US (mostly in Mexico and Central America). I never heard anything from them about it being a problem.

I gave it up last year, though, when I moved to South East Asia because the monthly cost is just so much more expensive than picking up SIM cards in places. You can get a super cheap SIM card in just about any airport on arrival and the service is probably better. When I had US-based clients or things to do, I just call them from a skype phone number.

That said, I still have my T-Mobile account - I give them $10/mo to hang on to my phone number in case I ever go back to the US.

I am not fully retired yet but I travel excessively for work. I find that if I mix it up with wifi calls and whatsapp with people in the US that I donโ€™t even show up on the radar.

Iโ€™m gone about 2 weeks a month routinely over the past 2 years on ProjectFi. Including China (I saw that on the thread).

I had heard of this possibility and have been a bit worried. So it is good to see some data points here.
I have been on Fi X 2-3 years and traveling abroad 6-7 months out of each year & bouncing through the US during that time. This seems to be fine as with the other posts. Yet my travels will now continue to increase, so I am interested to follow this. Thank you for your post.

slsoftworks: thanks for sharing your experience. Itโ€™s very useful. I think Iโ€™ll give it a try. Few questions:

  1. What kind of bandwidth were you getting throughout Asia? Did you ever feel like you were being throttled? (Fi isnโ€™t supposed to throttle, but who knows what the local carriers may be doing under the covers).

  2. Have you ever used Fi with an iPhone? My understanding is that an activated SIM will work in an iPhone. Iโ€™m planning to buy the cheapest Google phone to activate the SIM and then put it in my iPhone. Worst case, I can use the Google phone as a MiFi, but I really want to carry around one device.

  3. Do you happen to know if I can sign up for Fi while abroad? I expect Iโ€™ll need to ship it to someone in the US to activate for me and then have it sent to me. Any thoughts on the matter?

Hereโ€™s my 2 cents:

  1. The only throttling/slow data Iโ€™ve experienced, was in mainland China where data went to EDGE sometimes, but Fiโ€™s automatic VPN worked a treat so FB, Twitter etc worked fine, just slow. Other SEA countries were fine for me.

  2. You can use the Fi SIM in the iPhone, but you loose some of the calling over WiFi functionality. I have a backup iPhone and have popped it in now and then. Thereโ€™s lots of posts on the web about this.

  3. I bought a Pixel & Fi SIM online in the US (with a VPN) and had it shipped to New Zealand by a 3rd party where it activated without any problems (Jan 2017). Itโ€™s definitely less risky to activate in the US if you can arrange that. But seems like it may work if youโ€™re in a pinch.

Yeah, Charles answered most questions.

The most problems I had was in eastern-europe, it worked pretty flawlessly everywhere else, including SE-Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore - I havenโ€™t been to China with it, yet).

Iโ€™m using it in a Pixel, but to my knowledge it works pretty well in an iPhone too. You might want to have a project fi compatible phone with you, with the app, just in case, though.

The phone should activate wherever, Iโ€™d be furious if I was on a business trip, trashed my phone and couldnโ€™t activate my subscription in a new phone. In any case, first activation might be a different question, but you have to ship it to the US anyway, so if you can arrange it to be activated there you should be even more safe.

I have been using Project Fi for the past two years, predominantly abroad - I didnโ€™t get any warnings of suspension yet. That said:

  • I have been traveling a lot (ping-ponging between Asia and Europe, not really staying in the same place for more than a few weeks).
  • I have been returning to the US periodically, a few times a year.
  • Iโ€™m not a huge spender but use 3-4 GB per mo regularly, my Fi bill for two accounts is usually around $50-80.

I donโ€™t know how those affect the evaluation of whether or not you are an excessive user abroad, but Iโ€™m pretty sure something does. I donโ€™t think Project Fi will bother unless you really strain their networks, or clearly e.g. live in a country abroad for two years, rarely leaving it or rarely going to the US at all. In any case YMMV, but I think Project Fi is probably the single best thing that has happened to my Digital Nomad-ish travel convenience in the past years so itโ€™s worth trying out even if you eventually get limited/suspended.

I, too, am yet to see (and actually pretty curious to hear of) anyone who has been limited/suspended by Project Fi and hear what was their usage pattern.

Iโ€™m glad you pointed that policy out. I have Project FI. Though, the longest Iโ€™ve been outside the US using the service was about five or six months. I never had an issue. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™m an excessive user of their service. I usually connect to WiFi anyways. When Iโ€™m out and about using data, I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever used more than 2gb per month. Iโ€™ve started to get into the habit of turning off mobile data when Iโ€™m connected to WiFi to ensure data is going through WiFi; a Project Fi support staff told me that for SMS and calls, my phone might switch to using cell data if it detects that the cell signal is stronger than the WiFi signal. Anyways, more than six months, I donโ€™t know. I hope itโ€™ll be ok for you though.

Iโ€™m on T-Mobile too. Iโ€™ve been international for 8+ months and havenโ€™t gotten a warning yet. Interesting to know that you (woahitsraj) finally did: Iโ€™ve been wondering when itโ€™s gong to happen to me. Based on your experience, it seems I have some time.

Regardless, Iโ€™ve decided that as great as the T-Mobile plan is, Iโ€™m actually tired of only 3G data and no ability to tether. I started looking at Fi myself. Itโ€™s complicated for me because I have (and want to keep using) iPhone, yet I know itโ€™s still technically possible (after jumping through hoops).

I biggest issue is the fact that Fi has the same type of usage restrictions as T-Mobile, per Fiโ€™s TOS: I canโ€™t seem to post a URL right now, see attachment). Fi is related to T-Mobile only during usage in the US. Fiโ€™s restriction isnโ€™t related to T-Mobile. Itโ€™s just probably the case (as one would expect) that Fiโ€™s contracts with the US carriers is considerably more profitable than the ones they have with other countriesโ€™ carriers. (I thought Google is a global companyโ€ฆ sigh). Iโ€™m actually planning to call Fiโ€™s customer support to find out whether or not they truly enforce their policy.

Aside from that, Iโ€™ve been looking at a number of other international SIMs. The best option Iโ€™ve come across thus far is: KnowRoarming. Not too great on price, but better than all others Iโ€™ve researched. And itโ€™s a truly international solution, including the US.

Iโ€™m quite curious to know what others are doing.

I havenโ€™t used Project Fi but I also havenโ€™t heard of anyone getting terminated by them either. Iโ€™ve been using T-mobile internationally now for almost 2 years but I recently got a warning text so I was planning on switching to Fi once they kicked me off. Maybe go back and forth between Fi and T-mobile?

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 4yr 4 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Anyone here resident in Portugal with incorporation elsewhere in the EU? Need some advice

Hi everyone!

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโ€™m not planning to go full erm, โ€œtax optimisationโ€, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.

Iโ€™ve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโ€™m a EU citizen), but I donโ€™t want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!

Anyone (almost) exclusively traveling in Latin America?

Is there anyone around who spends most of their time in Latin America? After short trips to Peru earlier this year, Iโ€™ve now come back to Lima to stay for another three months and will then head to Buenos Aires. Lima will be kind of my home base but I aim to explore as much as possible of Latin America in the next couple of years. Anyone walking around the world while working?

by @michaltakac 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey guys,

Is there anybody who loves walking that much? Iโ€™m thinking about this for about 3 years now, and since I finished university this year, I could possibly plan for this huge trip and start sometime next year. I have no commitments, no girlfriend, some money saved and pretty strong motivation. I like to travel low cost (couchsurfing, exploring cities by walking, cooking own meals, sleep in a tent if needed).

Small background about me: Iโ€™ve been working 5+ years (and still working) as a software engineer remotely (full-stack, web, mobile, VR), trying to not spend everything and save a little here and there (plus some index funds, mutual funds and holding few cryptocurrencies). Walking is big part of my life since itโ€™s something like meditation, great time for creative thinking, research and solving problems. Usually my daily routine involves 10-20km of walking (some in the morning, some in the evening). So far longest stretch was 55km, aiming to raise it to at least 100km during next month. Also love to track everything (Fitbit Charge 2 + Gyrosco.pe).

Iโ€™m thinking if itโ€™s possible to walk around the world in 5 years while working occasionally during mornings or evenings (own web/mobile app, writing blog) and at the same time complete a PhD in Process Control (got an offer to work with great professor on an interesting thesis using augmented reality, for which I only need a smartphone, my Macbook and ability to once in a while consult with him over phone/skype).
