How can I forward my cell phone to wherever I am?

by @emondpph7yr  | 9 comments

Hi everybody ! Big congrats to the creators of this wonderful site. It helped me a lot in my decision. I have recently decided to make the jump to a nomadic lifestyle. I am from Montrรฉal in Canada and I co-own a business in web development and video production. I leave in May. My apartment is already rented. My first destination is Canaria Island.

My question today is about cell phone. I currently have a cell phone which I use for my personal and business communication. Itโ€™s with Rogers. All my clients know this number and sometimes they call me on it. Even if Iโ€™m abroad I would like them to be still able to contact me on the same phone number.

How could I achieve this and not spend a fortune ? Buying a monthly travel kit from Rogers is just way too expensive (about 80-100$ per month). So Iโ€™m thinking about some kind of call forwarding from my Canadian cellphone to either a local cellphone/or Skype/or vo-Ip solution.

How are you guys/girls doing it ? Thanks !

[I feel this is relevant enough to the conversation that it meets the community guidelines, especially as my project is more โ€œsharing something I built to make my life betterโ€ rather than a big commercial project, so, here goesโ€ฆ]

Something Iโ€™m working on is nomadphone.com - itโ€™s designed to let you have one or more numbers โ€˜back homeโ€™ (US, EU etc) and then will route calls to your local cell.

At the most base level, itโ€™s Google Voice with International, exceptโ€ฆ (drumroll) it also handles a bunch of annoyances for DNs, like:

  • if someone calls you during your sleep schedule, it can play a message explaining youโ€™re unavailable, but still give the caller the option to hit a button and have the call go through, if its an emergency. Otherwise, they get to leave a VM
  • does a bunch of magic to ensure calls go through to your local sim (tries multiple times if the first call doesnโ€™t go through, supports multiple numbers, lets you hear your audio quality before you accept the call in case itโ€™s a bad connection, etc)
  • handles text messages too (initially, inbound only, but v1.1 roadmap includes bidirectional SMS)
  • Optionally transcribes your voicemail and can search both sms & voicemail for โ€˜trigger wordsโ€™ you define and then have it place a call (i.e: a vm of โ€˜Bob, all the servers are down, this is a crisis and everyone is panicking. Call me urgentlyโ€™ could see the word โ€˜urgentโ€™ if youโ€™ve added that to your list, will result in the system calling you to say something urgent needs your attention, even during your sleep time)

And a few other nice things. Iโ€™m toying with the idea of adding a VOIP client option for those who have solid enough data and donโ€™t want their minutes used, maybe with a nice fallback (ie: for an incoming call to you, try your VOIP client(s) and if those fail, then call on your regular mobile number)

I found limitations with all the current solutions. I want to be reached when when internet is not great for voip dialing, so I want forwarding to my local number. I get a prepaid sim card for phone minutes at each airport when I arrive in a new country. I get 3G/4G internet, but often in rural areas this doesnโ€™t work too well but regular phone services still does.

Google Voice: Doesnโ€™t work internationally, so canโ€™t use to make calls outbound. Doesnโ€™t receive direct forwards to local number (must forward to skype, then have skype forward to local non-US phone number, introducing very long ring delays.) Pros: can send and receive texts with in chrome extension, is very handy.

Skype: Only works as a voip app. Can forward to local phone. No texting. Calls out appear with weird phone number you canโ€™t be reached at.

Ringcentral: App doesnโ€™t work outside of USA, requires app/internet to work, expensive. Kinda expensive ($20-30/month, pricy if I just use forwarding to local number, plus per minute forwarding.)

Grasshopper: App doesnโ€™t work outside of USA, requires app/internet to work, expensive. Kinda expensive ($20-30/month, pricy if I just use forwarding to local number, plus per minute forwarding.)

Vonage: Supposedly the app works outside of USA, but still requires app to work, and I hate talking to their clueless sales people make you negotiate to get a price from them. I got them to $29/month.

What I used to use: Google voice #. Forward to skype. Use skype to forward to local phone number. Set google voice voicemail answer time to a long time. Turn off skype voicemail. Calls eventually ring the local phone (but the caller has to wait forever) for about one or two rings before going to voicemail on google voice. I get notifications in my google voice chrome extension, along with incoming texts, and I can text out there. Again, google voice app doesnโ€™t work internationally for texting or making phone calls, so it sucks in many way.

What I use now: voip.ms (also Anveo is very similar) to host a phone number, voicemail, and forward to my local phone number wherever I am in southeast asia. It is very inexpensive, but it is very technical and you have to read a lot to sort out what to do if you are not quite familiar with voip technicals. I donโ€™t use a softphone app, but that can also be used to avoid paying for local phone minutes + forwarding minutes. I get emails with voicemails and text messages in them. There is a mobile webpage for texting. There is also an app I havenโ€™t used yet.

Twilio can also be used but you have to program it. Voip.ms is very technical, but you donโ€™t have to do any programming.

Not planning to go back home soon. But no, I think I will stay with Fongo.

Provider for data depends on each country. In Croatia a good one is T-Hrvatsk, it will cost you 11 euro per week for unlimited data and no contract.

If you have a Canadian phone number, go with Fongo. Itโ€™s awesome. Iโ€™m walking in the streets of Split, Croatia, talking on my local 514 phone number and it really works. You just need a prepaid SIM card for internet access. You can even do texting and very cheap international phone calls.

Thatโ€™s awesome.

What provider are you using for data? are you planning on switching back to rogers when you get home? Assume thatโ€™s not going to be an issue once you return?

Thanks to both of you. I think both Google Voice and Skype number are not available for Canadians at this moment. Freedomsurfer, Fongo looks great. Are you using it ? Do you know what is the difference between Fongo and a Vo-ip service like Vonage ? (apart from the cost !)

Check out the Fongo app for Android or iOS. Itโ€™s free to use and you can port your Canadian number to them. You can even call local Montreal numbers for free.

Iโ€™m currently in Montreal, if you want to meet for a beer feel free to send me a private message!

This post helped me navigate this morass, with some caveats: skype to local phone forwarding has only worked in some countries, and I had to give up my beloved US number in exchange for a google voice #. Would love to hear other solutions on thisโ€ฆ

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio4mo 3 months ago | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife5mo 4 months ago | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo5mo 4 months ago | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info1325mo 4 months ago | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara5mo 5 months ago | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok, Thailand by @germanrobert6mo 5 months ago | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough6mo 6 months ago | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon998mo 7 months ago | 8 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)

I am planning to travel to Mexico City next weekend and stay for 7-10 days there. I wonder if cafes, stores and other places like these work? And if cafes work, do they work as usual or only for take away&delivery? Will be very thankful if someone can help here.
