I just retried it with my google voice number and it worked with an sms verification, no problems. iโm in the US now so maybe location has something weird to do with it? but itโs nice to have my whatsapp working with my permanent number vs changing it all the time and never knowing what my number is since itโs from a SIM i had months ago. lol
Just did it with a Skype number. There is the option to call the newly to be registered whatapp number to get the activation code - no SMS needed. Worked like a charme for me.
I just tried this and yeah didnโt seem to work. Google Voice works for most confirmation stuff generally, 98% of the time Iโd say โ but services that base their entire user system around phone numbers e.g. WhatsApp tend to make sure that the number isnโt a VOIP number. Same with signing up for Google Voice itself.
I didnโt get the call from WhatsApp when I last tried a few months ago. I guess Iโll try again; itโd be cool if itโs working for all Google Voice numbers now. Itโs pretty confusing for people when I tell them my WhatsApp number is completely different than the number I use for SMS and calling.
Just to throw a bit more data out there, I tried two other messaging apps recently. KakaoTalk recognized my Google Voice number as VOIP and said it had frozen my account for registering with a non-physical number! (After reinstalling the app with a new SIM, I was able to register just fine using my new โrealโ number.) Telegram also refused to let me register using my Google Voice number, recognizing it as a virtual number.
I tried before to use a Google Voice number with WhatsApp, but it didnโt work (2015). Just tried again, and it worked just fine. WhatsApp wonโt be able to send you an SMS, but you can request a call with the verification digits and it should work.
Havenโt been able to get WhatsApp to work with my Google Voice number, but I was able to get Viber working with no problem, using the SMS confirmation code.
worked for me more than once (as recently as a few months back). i donโt use Line, just text and WA. my Skype out number is my google voice number. for calls to US, i use google hangouts.
at Google Voice, while you are choosing a number, GV will show you a list of numbers that are available in the area code you desireโฆ donโt pick any specific number just yet.
have WhatsApp running, and try to register a new number (it will prompt for your new number, then tell you itโs not valid, OR if itโs valid, that it will send a message to it).
if itโs a no go, choose another series, eg 212 555 6xxx doesnโt work, try 555 7xxx or 556 0xxx (from the list you are shown on google voice). or choose a different area code (646?) and try again.
itโs a matter of time before you find one that WA will accept. WA will send you a message, and i recall a confirmation before it does so (after accepting the number). before hitting OK, register the number on google voice before proceeding.
i suppose if i had to use Line, i would then run line and try it too before registering the number. worked for me one three occasions although it does take some time to figure out what currently works (or not). i think i spent about 15 minutes on my most recent try.

What I do is buying a local pre-paid SIM and put it in my smartphone. Since WhatsApp is already verificated I can continue using their service with my main Dutch number (so doesnโt have to be the SIMโs phone number).
Then I have a second smartphone wherein I put my Dutch SIM and forward calls to my local number.
You can now get sms to your google voice, the text message will show in your google hangouts, have you tried verifiiyng it that way?
Whatsapp will send you an sms and then put the code that you get in hangouts into whatsapp
Youโve been able to do that for a while however Whatsapp & Line generally does not recognise the google phone number as being a valid number.
Iโm experimenting with using Twilio. A virtual number that you can then forward inbound SMSs to your email.
@wanderingdev Tried that and itโd didnโt work. I think Iโm just going to give up on WhatsApp and LINE. If people need to reach me, Iโm on Facebook and Twitter.
Iโve just been getting a new account with each phone number so I can communicate with the locals. if theyโre locals I want to keep in touch with we generally connect on FB before I leave so can communicate that way after Iโm gone.

I tried this a few months ago but it didnโt work.
Google Voice and most other virtual numbers donโt let you receive confirmation numbers from messaging apps or web services.
Or maybe itโs the other way around. These apps want to confirm your number to avoid spam, so they need real actual human registered numbers. So they block virtual numbers.
My solution is to have a EUR 3,-/month SIM subscription in my country. Which I use to confirm stuff with.
@levelsio - which SIM card are you using, whoโs the provider?
Oh just a national cheap SIM carrier, in my case thatโs http://simyo.nl, but your own country probably has a similar one.

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.
I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Hi, we are trying to find a house to rent for 2-3 persons near Las Palmas for 4-5 months at the moment and it seems to be almost impossible except through Airbnb which is super expensive. Any advises or local contacts?

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.
Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.
